{{helpme}} I authored a very neutral biography about myself, it was tagged for deletion as not being noteworthy. I have over 35 years experience as a professional actor, a simple Google search will turn up numerous references to me and my work as well as images. I was on a CBS network series for 5 years, I have guest starred on numerous television shows (recently recurring on Mad Men as Morris Ginsberg) I may not be "notable" but I've done better than most. I'm listed in the IMDB data base, and numerous other web sites.

Please do not write or add to an article about yourself. Creating an autobiography is strongly discouraged – see our guideline on writing autobiographies. If you create such an article, it may be deleted. If what you have done in life is genuinely notable and can be verified according to our policy for articles about living people, someone else will probably create an article about you sooner or later (see Wikipedians with articles). If you wish to add to an existing article about yourself, please propose the changes on its talk page. Please understand that this is an encyclopedia and not a personal web space or social networking site. If your article has already been deleted, please see: Why was my page deleted?, and if you feel the deletion was an error, please discuss it with the deleting administrator. Thank you. Response to the message you posted on the talk page for Night Heat

edit

Hello Stedel,

I've taken a look at your article draft and the editor who rejected stated that the issue was that your draft failed to provide inline citations.

For example in the article about Night Heat, the first paragraph looks like this:

Night Heat is a Canadian police crime drama series that aired on both CTV in Canada and CBS in the United States. Original episodes were broadcast from 1985 to 1989.[1] Night Heat was the first Canadian original drama series that was also aired on a United States television network during its original broadcast.[2] It was also the first original, first-run drama series to be aired during a late night time slot on a television network in the United States.[3]

You will note that after each sentence there are numbered links ([1], [2], [3]) and if the reader were to hover over those numbered links, or click on them, they could see the sources that support the information in these sentences that are cited in the References section (which I've placed above for the sake of the example.)

While you did provide a list of various articles in a bulleted list under the "References" heading in your article draft, the reader has no way of knowing which sentences in your Wikipedia article draft are referenced by these various articles cited in that bulleted list. You also provided a bunch of embedded links to IMDb, which—like Wikipedia—is a user-contributed site, which means that basically anyone can edit it and therefore it is not, in and of itself, considered a reliable source as per Wikipedia's guidelines.

Many of the sources cited in your References section would constitute reliable sources, therefore, if properly cited, they could get your article published as long as you cite them accurately and make sure that you haven't included information that they do not support directly: For example, is your full date of birth published in any of those sources? Do any of these sources list your parents' names, the name of the high school that you attended, the year you first moved to Los Angeles, etc? While this information may be true, these details must also be verifiable within your cited references, otherwise the information would have to be excluded.

Having said all of that, I might be able to assist you in creating an article that would be accepted if you were able to assist in providing actual web links to the source articles, if they are available for free somewhere on the web (or perhaps dead links that we might be able to bring-up via web archives such as Wayback Machine). Or if by chance have collected hard copies of each of these articles, you might consider scanning and posting copies to your personal website, so that someone such as myself could view them without having to pay to see them.

Please keep in mind that the vast majority of editors on Wikipedia are just regular individuals, such as myself, who simply decided to register an editor account and who edit for free on their free time about subjects that interest them using sources that they either find via the web, or have access to via written sources that they might own (like physical books, magazines or newspapers) or that they may even seek out via on-line library access or by physically visiting libraries, etc. As you probably know, many newspapers and magazines only offer access to their archives via paid subscriptions. Wikipedia does offer some access to some sites with collections of newspapers and other publications, such as Newspapers.com, NewspaperArchives.com and Questia, which I do have access to via The Wikipedia Library research hub, but even those sites only have a limited number of publications accessible within them.

If you or your publicist are newcomers to editing on Wikipedia, you might consider looking at the following links:

You might also consider reading about Wikipedia's conflict of interest guidelines, which address situations where one wishes to contribute to Wikipedia on articles about themselves or people with which one has close relationships, as well as Wikipedia's guidelines on biographies of living persons. You might also read the policy about what Wikipedia is not, which also gets into the fact that the site is not meant to be a means of self promotion.

So if you are able to assist in providing links to or copies of the articles in your References section, I will see what I can do, while also keeping in mind that, like almost all editors, I edit here for free on my free time. I can't make any promises about timelines or whether the finished product would be accepted, but I've created new articles myself that certainly have been and I am willing to help.

Cheers! Marchijespeak/peek 13:43, 18 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for taking the time to respond in depth. I'll be 70 in Jan. When my former publicist and I undertook to post an article I was still actively working. Although not retired I work primarily from my home voice studio now. I remain disappointed that a factual article about me, with citations from actual magazine and newspaper articles was rejected. Please remember that when Night Heat was in production, 1984-1988, the Internet was in its infancy. Neither I nor my publicist had the resources to dig deeper. As I said before, I made my living as an actor for over 45 years and appeared in many tv episodics and some movies. It was disappointing to see many others with fewer credits with intact articles. Stedel (talk) 00:17, 25 September 2022 (UTC)Reply

I understand your frustration. It could be that the Wikipedia articles about "others with fewer credits" are still active because their creator was able to supply inline citations as I've described above. There's also the chance that they were created at a time when the requirements to create a new article on Wikipedia were less restrictive. There's still a good chance that we can get you a page if you can provide the information required to format inline citations. A simple list of publications won't do, I'm afraid. The reader needs to know which sentences in the Wikipedia article are supported by which publications. It's also to try to maintain a neutral point of view as free as possible from personal biases or avoid original research. Marchijespeak/peek 23:51, 28 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
Hello, I've had an opportunity to reread our correspondence. As I said above, I turned 70 about a month ago. I continue to work as an actor, 47 years now, mostly voice work from my home studio but I guested on an episode of NCIS LA late last year. Many of the television shows and movies in which I have appeared have listings on Wikipedia with my name in the credits. I believe there there is a stub article in Canadian Wiki about me. I would like to take you up on your offer to help me get an article published simply for posterity. Many of the people I have worked with over the years who have fewer credits than I have articles. I just looked at the article about Night Heat, the series I was in for 96 episodes and most of my fellow actors have independent articles. I think I have some of the hard copy somewhere and would be happy to post those articles on my own website. By the way, I noticed that at least a few of my fellow actors use IMDB in their sources. My list of credits is real and I am not simply trying to promote myself but rather acknowledge a body of work. I'm semi-retired now and would like to correct the record.
Regards,
Stephen Mendel Stedel (talk) 18:51, 25 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
addendum: I did a little google search on myself just now. There are quite a few independent references to my acting, narration, and music work. I continue to be surprised that the person who took down the article about me won't do a tiny bit of looking to see that I am legitimate. Stedel (talk) 19:00, 25 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
