RE:Offering adoption

I am interested in you helping me out and adopting me. What do i need to do to make this happen? Red Meets Blue —Preceding undated comment added 01:22, 4 May 2009 (UTC).Reply

its a yes from me.. I have added this talk page to my watch list. So do as you please. Where do we start? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Redmeetsblue (talkcontribs) 01:52, 4 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
Ok, well, on wikipedia, people normally will sign their posts, using 4 tildes at the end of their comments (~~~~), which will insert your signature, and the current date and time. This allows other Wikipedians to see who made a comment, and when. As for whats first, I guess I'd like to know a bit about you, your interests, and why you chose to start editing Wikipedia. I'll go first. I'm Steve, 19, married. I like the TV show 24, and co-ordinate the 24 wikiproject. I started editing wiki because i wanted to add my knowledge to the site. What about you? Steve Crossin Talk/Help us mediate! 02:06, 4 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
sweet well I'm Joel, 21, single and am a web designer. I work for a business called Red Meets Blue design. We have a lot of clients with stories to add into wikipedias encyclopedia. I joined for a chance to add into this encyclopedia what it already does not have, a chance to share these stores. Redmeetsblue (talk) 02:27, 4 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
OK, Joel. Most people will just call me Steve around here. Alright, well, I see a few issues we need to fix up. Wikipedia generally advises against creating usernames that are somewhat promotional, for example, Redmeetsblue somewhat promotes the company you work for. We also generally don't recommend you edit articles that you are involved with. Before we continue, I might suggest you get a rename? Perhaps something like Joel21? I'm not really sure it's up to you. My username is my real life name. Or Joel and a made up last name. Up to you. Also, what do you like doing, in real life? Sports, music, TV shows? Do you like helping people solve their problems? It might be for the best to not edit articles you have a conflict of interest in? People who do so generally have a harder time editing. I have a bureaucrat (you'll learn about them later) who is standing by, ready to rename you when you've chosen a new name. Best, Steve Crossin Talk/Help us mediate! 02:42, 4 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
Well thats fine. My full name is Joel Seneque. If we could rename it to that it would be great. or joelseneque, not bothered. My hobbies are basically playing drums, i like Australian Football(AFL) and i really enjoy watching the TV series Heroes. I do like helping people solve their problems. It brings me joy to help others. So you would recommend not editing pages with my interests? What if i knew a great deal about my hobbie? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Redmeetsblue (talkcontribs) 03:05, 4 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
OK, your rename should take place any moment. I'm interested in 24, and I can edit that, however, I wouldn't edit articles relating to Woolworths Limited, as I work for them. Might be best for you to do the same. You might be interested in writing articles on AFL? (And Heroes is great :)). Remember to sign your posts :) Steve Crossin Talk/Help us mediate! 03:09, 4 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
Yeah sorry about the posts :) just need to get used to it. Usually signitures are automative :) so for me to edit detail about Red Meets Blue (a graphic design agency that i work for) would be fine? I will endevour to not have an advertisement feel about it, and i guess with that project I could get you to check it before i go ahead with it?Redmeetsblue (talk) 03:15, 4 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
Hmm, well, I'd not recommend it. Make your edits in a Special:MyPage/Sandbox first, and if you'd like to put them to article space, perhaps ask me first. Also, now that you've had a rename, you will need to change your signature. Go to Special:Preferences, and copy this into the Signature field.
[[User:Joel Seneque|Joel Seneque]] ([[User talk:Joel Seneque|talk]])
. We'll start on your lessons once you're done. :) Steve Crossin Talk/Help us mediate! 03:19, 4 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
Well I've changed the signiture in my preferences so i think we're ready. Joel Seneque (talk) 03:27, 4 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
Not quite. You need to log into the Joel Seneque account. Click Special:UserLogout, then log in again, type Joel Seneque into username, and your current password into password. Then reply here again :) Steve Crossin Talk/Help us mediate! 03:31, 4 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Adoption

edit

Alright, let's get started. I have an Adoption program that I find works well, however I think it might be better if you have a look through some of the basic policies of Wikipedia. I haven't made a lesson for policies yet, but I'll write something here.

WP:SIMPLE would be the best place to start, policy wise. It has a simple list of the key important policies, but personally, the best one is Use common sense. Don't vandalise, be nice to others, Don't undo someone else's edit repeatedly without proper discussion, Assume that other editors are making edits to try to help the encyclopedia, When you write articles, add sources to show that you found the info in a reliable source, like a newspaper, and most importantly, make edits boldly.

This may be a bit overwhelming to start with, but you don't need to learn all of this in a day. It's probably best you look over these before we get properly started. If you have any questions, just ask. My talk page is always open. Once you've had a flick through these pages, let me know, and we'll get properly started on your adoption. Best, Steve Crossin Talk/Help us mediate! 03:41, 4 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Great thanks alot Steve. I will endevour to learning these policies and will let you know once i have done more study using the links. This wont probably happen today but i will keep you posted Joel Seneque (talk) 04:41, 4 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
That's fine. Another one you should probably look at is Using edit summaries. It's customary to write a brief description of what you changed in your edit. For example, I would write Reply in tbe edit summary box, as I am replying to your post. Does that make sense? Steve Crossin Talk/Help us mediate! 04:45, 4 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
Hi Steve I've read through the articles and it all seems fine to me. When ever your ready for the next step, i too am ready. Joel Seneque (talk) 03:32, 11 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
Alright, well perhaps you could tell me what you learned from the links I showed you (on beginner policies) :). After that, start on one of the lessons, I'd recommend either starting with permissions or [1.1]. Once you're done a lesson (don't rush), there are questions I can give you to test what you learned. Mediation Cabal, University of South Carolina

edit

I would be glad to proceed with an RfC on user conduct for ViperNerd if I could find a couple of other editors willing to endorse the RfC on user conduct. As it stands, ViperNerd has been blocked on several occasions for edit warring and is pushing the lines of civility. Despite the editor in question's assertions, I've attempted to edit the article, yet each time my edits have been reverted - the most recent attempt resulted in a lengthy block for ViperNerd due to previous blocks for edit warring. Advice from you would be appreciated. Thanks for your time and help Fletch81 (talk) 05:32, 4 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Wow. And the lies just keep on coming. Your "edits" to the article in question have been nothing but template and fact tag additions, and you haven't even bothered to make an edit since opening the RfC. If you are truly interested in improving the article as you keep claiming, then JUST DO IT. Start adding some actual content or assist in sourcing what is already there, but your obvious personal agenda isn't serving to improve anything, it only makes you look like someone with a grudge against another editor. What's next up in your crusade against me if you don't get the satisfaction you're looking for here? Run and cry to ArbCom? Also, you should have been blocked for edit warring in the USC article, as you were just as guilty as I was, but you managed to get an admin who for whatever reason decided to give you a break on your violation of the spirit of 3RR that day. Congrats on dodging a block that you clearly deserved. ViperNerd (talk) 06:26, 4 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
I'd advise starting an RFC/U, as from what I've looked over in the past few minutes, it looks like they have problems with edit warring and article ownership. I can't really give much help in filing the RFC, as a mediator it's my job to not take sides. I'm just telling you how I see things, my opinion as an editor. I'd suggest you show clear diffs demonstrating the problematic behaviour of this user, in your opinion. If you can clearly show this, someone will endorse the RFC. Hope this helps. Best, Steve Crossin Talk/Help us mediate! 06:19, 4 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
Sorry to break it to you and Fletch81, but it takes more than just a couple of random editors who disapprove of another user's behavior to open an RfC/U. Here are the MINIMUM requirements laid out by Wikipedia:
Minimum requirements
Before requesting community comment, at least two editors must have contacted the user on their talk page, or the talk pages involved in the dispute, and tried but failed to resolve the problem. Any RfC not accompanied by evidence showing that two users tried and failed to resolve the same dispute will be deleted after 48 hours as "uncertified". The evidence, preferably in the form of diffs, should not simply show the dispute itself, but should show attempts to find a resolution or compromise. The users certifying the dispute must be the same users who were involved in the attempt to resolve it. Uncertified user RFCs or deleted user RFCs will be removed from this page. This information is also available at Wikipedia:Requests for comment#Request comment on users.
This clearly hasn't taken place in the USC article. After the RfC was opened, some editing to remove POV (the main concern of Fletch81) has taken place, and no further edit warring has occurred, so where is the "dispute"? As I've stated over and over and over, for some reason Fletch81 is making a mountain out of a molehill, and seems to have ZERO interest in improving the article by editing it directly. This is baffling behavior to say the least. ViperNerd (talk) 06:36, 4 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
Thanks Steve. Good advice. I'll definitely heed your advice - I appreciate editors like you who seek to make wikipedia a better place. Take care Fletch81 (talk) 07:05, 4 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
Well, Wiki can be a nasty place at times. I help where i can. :) Steve Crossin Talk/Help us mediate! 07:32, 4 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

24 and advertising

Hi. Yes, tagging specific problems would be a constructive way to proceed [2]. Regards, Piano non troppo (talk) 11:00, 5 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

I'm glad we can agree on this. I've watched this article for months (being Project co-ordinator), but I've not done much about it. Maybe it's time for me to do something. Any chance you could give me a hand? First off, I think this section would look a lot better as prose. What do you think? Best, Steve Crossin Talk/Help us mediate! 11:05, 5 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
In this case, I'm not the person to assist, not having deep knowledge of the show. My concern is that there's a great deal of essay and original research, at least some of which appears to be marketing-driven. Statements such as "The action switches between different locations tracing parallel adventures of different characters involved in the same overarching plot." are uncited essay language. (And in this specific case describes millions -- perhaps the majority -- of TV shows and novels.) Regards, Piano non troppo (talk) 11:15, 5 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Shell To Sea Mediation Continued

edit

Adding a new section for this. The top thread is getting a bit long :) Steve Crossin Talk/Help us mediate! 23:29, 6 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for agreeing to Mediate, I just finished reworking a section on one of the affected articles [3], just before agreement. I've also let 2 other users who have edited on these articles that MedCab is underway, user:Smartse and user:Canterbury Tail have made some edits after listing on COIN and AFD noticeboards. GainLine 23:43, 6 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
That's fine. I was eager to take on a big case, I haven't really mediated since my last big case, which I learned a lot from, so I should have more success with this case. This is merely a test, but sign underneath if you've watchlisted my page :). Additionally, discussion will commence immediately at the Case talk page. Best, Steve Crossin Talk/Help us mediate! 23:46, 6 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
Eye on, Its late here so I'll catch it there tomorrow, again, Thank you, its a pretty large and difficult case GainLine 23:48, 6 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Just lettin ya know I've watchlisted this talk page too. The timezone difference shouldn't change things really, the other party involved (User:Lapsed Pacifist) is only really active for short periods of time, I doubt there'll be near-instantaneous back and forths. Anyway, I'm in the same timezone as GainLine, so it's time for sleep for me too! Thanks! Fin© 00:15, 7 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
Alright, goodnight :-) Steve Crossin Talk/Help us mediate! 00:17, 7 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
While I wouldn't expect instant action on the article I do think leaving large scale removal of sections of the article without an edit summary ( something I did provide in my revert ) by an editor whose only edits are to the that article outstanding for over 3 hours is a bit long. If you feel I have done wrong then revert but I have to ask why that editor was not informed of the ground rules especially when that article is all they have ever edited. Garda40 (talk) 07:48, 7 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
I didn't spot it, and wasn't aware of their involvement. The undo is fine. I'll leave a note on their talk page. Will you be participating as well? Steve Crossin Talk/Help us mediate! 07:53, 7 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
No I won't for the reason I mentioned on the previous mediation's talk page . I have kept away from the article for the last couple anyway for that reason but it is still on my watchlist which is how I spotted that section being removed .
If the editor had provided an edit summary I may not have even reverted that edit .Garda40 (talk) 08:05, 7 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
Fair enough :). Have a great day. Steve Crossin Talk/Help us mediate! 08:06, 7 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hi, I've been looking at the issues around these articles too after Gainline notified the WP:COIN. I think that quite a few probably need to be deleted but I though I'd ask whether you think I should wait a while until the mediation gets somewhere. 2 articles that certainly spring to mind are: Rossport Solidarity Camp - all references are from the self published Indymedia and as far as I'm aware don't normally count as a reliable source. [Policing of the Corrib gas protests]] - this should probably be merged into Corrib gas controversy in a similar way to the policing mentioned on 2009 G-20 London summit protests. Alternatively I don't mind not editing these article either if it will aid mediation. Cheers Smartse (talk) 12:51, 7 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hello. Yes, i saw the noticeboard thread and the current open AFD on Shell to Sea Fleet which should run its course. However, the notability of articles will be addressed in the medcab case. And if you wouldn't mind editing the articles for the time being, that would be great. Best, Steve Crossin Talk/Help us mediate! 13:40, 7 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
That's fine by me. Smartse (talk) 15:15, 7 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
I spotted another article which although hasn't been directed affected by the current dispute would seem to be related, I've added it to the RFM now. GainLine 15:14, 7 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Yep, already spotted it. I'm writing a background statement on myself now. :) Steve Crossin Talk/Help us mediate! 22:10, 8 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hi Steve, Just a quick note to express my concern on the progression (or lack of) on the meditation. Since LP has agreed to not edit articles, he has made at least 2 edits, here: [4] to insert some WP:OR into this article and more worrying the edit on Kevin Moore: [5] which was a straight move and rename to avoid a PROD. As it stands the articles are a mess, read the comments of some of the users here: [6]. I have to agree, some of this stuff comes across as attack articles. Since LP has agreed to mediation, he has failed to engage and provide a statement which would allow the mediation to get underway. This is despite evidence of plenty of activity. This stall is to LPs advantage as it leaves the articles locked in their current state. I know there's very little you can do but you can see the frustration. So where do we go from here? GainLine 21:46, 12 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Yes, I've seen both edits, and the lack of a statement concerns me. I guess I could have protection applied, but I'm not too sure. I am still waiting for their statement, and will poke them again regarding it. Sorry about the delay. Steve Crossin Talk/Help us mediate! 21:55, 12 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

No worries, not your fault at all, you've come through with things exactly as you said you would. I saw some of these articles directly quoted in a forum today which was a worry. There does seem to be some editors willing to help on the articles but one will do anything with the MedCab in place. The issues need sorting and soon, an imposed stall isn't helping. GainLine 22:36, 12 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

OK, I'll try poking the user on their talk page. I'm pretty busy in real life today, so will look at their response tomorrow. Best, Steve Crossin Talk/Help us mediate! 22:40, 12 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Mentor

edit

Per Wikipedia:Adopt-a-User/Adoptee's_Area/Adopters, are you still adopting? I've got a user in mind and it's part of his probation that he seek Mentorship. If you are, please see User talk:AbstractClimber. If you aren't, please change your status at the adoption page. - ALLSTRecho wuz here @ 05:30, 8 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Got to say I'm astounded you asked me and not someone like AGK. I've done adoption before, but never mentored anyone. That said, i'm willing to give it a go. But mentors are usually admins...i guess there's ways around that. I'll do it. What sort of conditions are there to the mentorship? Steve Crossin Talk/Help us mediate! 07:39, 8 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
Ahh, AGK? I didn't realize there was a difference. The use's probation terms basically say he must be mentored via adoption by a more experienced user. That's what I'm looking for. Someone to take him on and show him the ropes, help him understand policy, etc. See his talk page as well as the AN discussion that's also linked on his talk page. - ALLSTRecho wuz here @ 08:09, 8 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
Just checking, but would this be regular adoption (though via User:Steve Crossin/Adoption), though of course keeping a close eye on them, or would there be more to it, as in, would it be formal mentorship. Just so it's clear what's being asked of me. Steve Crossin Talk/Help us mediate! 10:26, 8 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
Definitely formal but the "courses" wouldn't hurt either. I'll leave that up to you. We just want to see a sincere and productive user come out of this, since he seems to be making an attempt to put the past behind and become a positive asset to Wikipedia. In that light, I want him to learn from a good one and I think, from your own past, that good one would be you. A mentor is intended to provide a mixture of oversight, double checking, and coaching, in an informal friendly manner. When you feel he's ready to be on his own, let me or Durova know. Likewise, if you feel it's not going as planned, let me or Durova know. We will of course be keeping an eye on his progress but won't intervene. Instead, we will post to your talk page about any issues we have or see and let you be the one to, in your capacity as mentor/tutor, guide the user in regards to the issue. - ALLSTRecho wuz here @ 10:40, 8 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
Well, i'd like to help. I know all too well about wanting to put the past behind us (myself included). I remember what a trouble user User:RyanCross when he was first on wiki, and he turned out pretty good. As it's formal, i'd like Durova's consent. Might i suggest an account restriction be applied too? (one account only). Steve Crossin Talk/Help us mediate! 10:54, 8 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
Yes, account restriction is a good idea if you mean what I think you mean (socks?) and didn't even cross my mind. - ALLSTRecho wuz here @ 10:59, 8 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
Well yes, ie, "User:X must edit wikipedia only from the User:X account". But the point is clear. They've socked before, so that needs to be made clear that socking has to stop. Steve Crossin Talk/Help us mediate! 11:04, 8 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hello Steve. I'm happy to be your mentoree, and I absolutely understand any restrictions placed on my account given my past behavior. As I'm sure you've read, I've been very active on wikipedia, but mostly as a vandal attempting to harass an SPA so he would stop pushing his POV. I feel my intentions were noble, but my actions were shameful. Despite my homophobic remarks, AllStarecho has been unbelievably magnanimous to me, which has actually made me feel much worse about the whole thing.

Anyway, I genuinely want to improve wikipedia. I'm quite anal retentive about source checking :) which is how I came across the pulsatile irrigation advertisements on the nasal irrigation page and immediately spotted some gaping holes. I look forward to learning about how I should have reacted.AbstractClimber (talk) 14:57, 8 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Alright, well, I think for disclosure purposes, I should let you know about my past. I've done a fair bit of content work, and I've earned a triple crown, and I've mediated quite a few difficult cases, including one I'm mediating right now. I've adopted a problem user before, and they're doing quite well now (they're an admin on another Wikimedia project). However, for unrelated reasons, I had a serious misstep last year, and I was sitebanned for six months. However, I've come back pretty well, and I think that's the reason I was asked to mentor you because I know how to "make a comeback" from low points in Wiki-careers. If you're still happy for me to mentor you, I'll proceed, and lay down a few conditions that I think would help your mentorship run smoothly. Best, Steve Crossin Talk/Help us mediate! 23:21, 8 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
I'm certainly still interested, and I look forward to hearing your terms! Regards, AbstractClimber (talk) 04:15, 9 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
Sorry about the massive delay in my reply, I've been going non-stop all day (and I'm only on for a minute, I'm on a break at work). Anyway, I've thought over this a little bit, and I think the it would be best if you follow the following conditions, at least until your mentorship is over.
 • You agree to edit Wikipedia from one, and only one account, and shouldn't operate any legitimate socks for the time being.
 • You agree to not edit the Nasal irrigation article, or any article in that area, as this seems to be an area you have had issues in editing.
 • You agree to participate in my Adoption program, and complete all lessons (including one on Policies that I'm currently developing).

That's basically it, that I can think of at the moment. Now, I'm rather formal, and like to call people on Wikipedia by their first name. I'd like you to tell me what your first name, and real life interests are, for example, TV shows, music, etc. Whatever you might edit on Wikipedia. We'll proceed after that. Best, Steve Crossin Talk/Help us mediate! 09:05, 9 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

RfA Thanks

edit
Thank you for participating in my recent RfA, which was unable pass with a final tally of (45/39/9). I plan on addressing the concerns raised and working to improve in the next several months. Hopefully, if/when I have another RfA I will win your support. Special thanks go to MBisanz, GT5162, and MC10 for nominating me. Thanks again, -download ׀ sign! 01:24, 13 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for your support

Unfortunately, my RFA was closed recently with a final tally of 75½/38/10. Though it didn't succeed, I wanted to thank you for your support and I hope I can count on it in the future. Even though it didn't pass, it had a nearly 2 to 1 ratio of support and I am quite encouraged by those results. I intend to review the support, oppose, and neutral !votes and see what I can do to address those concerns that were brought up and resubmit in a few months. If you would like to assist in my betterment and/or co-nominate me in the future, please let me know on my talk page. Special thanks go to Schmidt, MICHAEL Q., TomStar81, and henrik for their co-nominations and support. — BQZip01 — talk

76.127.77.5 (talk · contribs · WHOIS) was supposed to be blocked indefinitely, as a sockpuppet of AK56 (talk · contribs). However, dude has returned with an edit war, making unsourced and provocative claims, exactly as before. How did he become unblocked? Fconaway (talk) 17:07, 17 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

The thing is, IP addresses can't be blocked indefinitely. I can have the block reapplied and lengthened, however. Steve Crossin Talk/Help us mediate! 21:26, 17 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
Yes, you are correct in this. Unfortunately, AK56 and his socks don't want to be drawn into anything like a dialogue about sources. Would some sort of semi-protection be an option? Fconaway (talk) 06:06, 20 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
Should be an option, I'll get something done. Steve Crossin Talk/Help us mediate! 23:24, 20 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
Semi-protected for a period of 2 weeks, after which the page will be automatically unprotected.. Hope that helps. Steve Crossin Talk/Help us mediate! 23:34, 20 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
Thanks! That should help. Fconaway (talk) 23:56, 20 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Janis

Hey - I just noticed that you added Janis to my notes - thank you. And I apologize for not getting back to that. I will make a concerted effort to get improvements made to some of the 24 articles within the next week. I do appreciate the reminder, and I'll never be bothered by a little <*poke*>. In fact, with my memory, I wish folks would poke me a little more ... lol. Hope the new life is treating you well. My best to you and yours. ;) — Ched : ? 14:42, 21 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
