I'm upset. A user called Wafulz destroyed my template. Point number one. What a way to utterly waste 10 min. Esperanza can never be healed, though I still dream of a community among us, where userboxes and all are accepted. Point number two. I'm exhausted. I don't plan to leave, I'm having a bout of Wikidepression. Point number three. I think I may have to break again...I've only been back here a week!--Editor510 drop us a line, mate 20:10, 20 August 2008 (UTC)

Wafulz was perfectly okay in deleting your template. It was only used on your Esperanza page, which was deleted. It is also not appropriate to have a template that warns readers that they will be receiving a "severe talking to." Metros (talk) 20:12, 20 August 2008 (UTC)

Atlantic Goliath grouper

Man, it's been a rough few weeks for you on the wikipedia front. I've been checking in from time-to-time to keep up with the drama. Looks like you made it through though! Anyways, I just made my first page move. I moved Goliath grouper to Atlantic Goliath grouper, as there was recently declared a new species of Pacific Goliath grouper. I read the page on page moves, but I was just hoping you could check it out really quickly to make sure I'm not going to get my face eaten off by violating ettiquette?

Thanks! —Preceding unsigned comment added by Bradenkeith (talkcontribs) 20:43, 21 August 2008 (UTC)

Request for participation in User:Abd/RfC

Because my participation as a Wikipedia editor has been questioned, and if I continue as I have in the past, I can expect future challenges as well, I have begun a standing RfC in my user space, at User:Abd/RfC. There is also a specific incident RfC at User:Abd/RfC/8.11.08 block. I understand that you may not have time to participate directly; however, if you wish to be notified of any outcome from the general or specific RfC, or if you wish to identify a participant or potential participant as one generally trusted by you, or otherwise to indicate interest in the topic(s), please consider listing yourself at User:Abd/RfC/Proxy Table, and, should you so decide, naming a proxy as indicated there. Your designation of a proxy will not bind you, and your proxy will not comment or vote for you, but only for himself or herself; however, I may consider proxy designations in weighing comment in this RfC, as to how they might represent the general community. You may revoke this designation at any time. This RfC is for my own guidance as to future behavior and actions, it is advisory only, upon me and on participants. This notice is going to all those who commented on my Talk page in the period between my warning for personal attack, assumptions of bad faith, and general disruption, on August 11, 2008, until August 20, 2008. This is not a standard RfC; because it is for my advice, I assert authority over the process. However, initially, all editors are welcome, even if otherwise banned from my Talk space or from the project. Canvassing is permitted, as far as I'm concerned; I will regulate participation if needed, but do not spam. Notice of this RfC may be placed on noticeboards or wikiprojects, should any of you think this appropriate; however, the reason for doing this in my user space is to minimize disruption, and I am not responsible for any disruption arising from discussion of this outside my user space. Thanks for considering this. --Abd (talk) 02:48, 22 August 2008 (UTC)

AFD

Can I take it then, that you are retracting the questioning of my competence at AN/I? I don't really care about the rest, but I did find those comments upsetting. If that is the case, then the matter is finished as far as I am concerned. Gatoclass (talk) 06:25, 22 August 2008 (UTC)

Okay, thanks. I was a little peeved to find earlier today a message on Sandstein's page which appeared critical of me, which didn't seem to be very much in the spirit of reconciliation, however, I'm assuming you intended no slight and was just hoping to cool things down a bit.
I appreciate your comments on my talk page, and as far as I'm concerned, this little difference of opinion is now resolved. As regards AFD, I'm as yet undecided as to a general policy but in the unlikely event I nominate one of your articles again, you can be sure I will notify you about it!
Oh, and thanks for the wikiwine :) Gatoclass (talk) 12:44, 22 August 2008 (UTC)

Regarding Edit to Chumbley Article

Thank-you for your reply. I'm interested in your use of the phrase "our Chumbley" when writing to me and now that you have told me your former moniker here on Wiki, how you came to the conclusion in your commentary regarding the deletion discussion that "In actuality he took on very few personal students- (so it's unlikely many have contributed here)". Did you know Chumbley personally? Lulubyrd (talk) 21:43, 26 August 2008 (UTC)

recent advice

I was a little upset about the bias so I decided to stay away from Wikipedia for 3 days and I forgot to come back. I will let it go. I think Wikipedia does have a liberal bias as some say. Funny that the very left wing dictator of North Korea is not called a dictator nor is Saddam Hussein, whom some like more than Bush. Pinochet was a dictator in my opinion but it's mentioned in the introduction where it's given a paragraph. I think NPOV allows/encourages description of his dictatorship but since he is so recent and because there is civilian political parties who partially support some of his policies, Wikipedia should be neutral and be careful about calling him a dictator in the first sentence of the article. 903M (talk) 06:53, 1 September 2008 (UTC)

I thought about alerting you to the thread on AN/I and didn't. Sorry about that. I blame insomnia and multitasking. Any idea what's going on with her? That whole password request has me feeling very uneasy and there never was an actual explanation. AniMate 12:02, 1 September 2008 (UTC)

Help me on the non-free use policy

According to the policy, to use non-free use images, all 10 criteria must be met. Not 8 or 9. Help out. The article is Henry Ford. Not having the Time Magazine article doesn't make the article bad. Having it doesn't make the article good. Having it, if it doesn't meet all 10 criteria makes Wikipedia look either sloppy or like thieves. I am not a thief. I do not condone stealing, even if done by mistake. 903M (talk)

Please be more careful

I accept your revert was good faith. But it was really careless and dangerous. I removed material from an article under the BLP policy, and clearly stated so in my edit summary. You simply reverted me, replacing the biased material on a living subject, and did so with no explanation or edit summary. I know recent changes partolers see a lot of vandalism, but you really need to investigate further before assuming a removal is bad faith. Particularly when BLP is clearly cited in the edit summary. If you disagree with a removal, then at least give a reason. OK, lecture over.--Scott MacDonald (talk) 00:12, 23 September 2008 (UTC)

2 matters

The first is Bookkeeperoftheoccult. First impressions are often wrong but that user doesn't excite me. Any other wise adopters? Of course, sometimes the second impression is more accurate and Mr. Occult may fare much better on a 2nd look.

I want to discuss with you the second matter before acting. The use of the article title in the lead sentence irks me. Many times, it is appropriate. Pablo Neruda, born 18--, was a Chilean poet... is ok. Iceland is a country located in the North Atlantic... also ok. However, some titles are made up by Wikipedia editors and used like a television episode name. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2006_European_Figure_Skating_Championships and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rome_and_Vienna_airport_attacks are not the worse examples but is one where Wikipedia editors apparently made up the title. Another example is the "Murder of (name)" articles which often read "The Murder of --- --- was when -- -- was murdered on -- --, 200-." The custom is to incorporate the exact title, using the title name first (possibly inserting "the" first) in the lead sentence. There is a manual of style (need to look for it) that says that this doesn't have to be the case.

I propose looking for the guideline and seeking consensus to re-write it slightly. Then fix the awkward sounding articles to meet the guideline. If successful, this would improve Wikipedia by improving about 3% of the goofy lead sentences that clumsily incorporate a made up article title.

Opinion? 903M (talk) 03:15, 23 September 2008 (UTC)

New Aeon English Qabala

I disagree that this should be combined with the other AfD. This system has had several independent books written about it. I won't argue that it shouldn't go through AfD, but at least make it a separate one. We shouldn't be trying the topic, but rather whether the article / sources meet Wikipedia requirements. As the sources are different, they should be judged individually. Wednesday Next (talk) 21:23, 23 September 2008 (UTC)

Thanks. Not sure I have an opinion on these, but they seemed qualitatively different when I looked at them earlier. Perhaps merge for one or both. I'll keep my eye on them for now. At first glance, it appears to me that one editor or group of editors wants to supplant the other as "The" standard, with the ensuing misplaced edit warring. Ugh. Wednesday Next (talk) 21:44, 23 September 2008 (UTC)

Ah, I see you are working on the other article. Sigh. Will have to work on merging the two, but my eyes have had enough for the evening. QaBobAllah (talk) 01:44, 24 September 2008 (UTC)
By the way, since you seem to be trying to evaluate sources, while the follow-on books referring to Jim Lees' system do seem to be self-published, the original venue of publication, The Equinox: British Journal of Thelema was a well-respected peer-reviewed journal with an editorial team, etc. etc. Some of the articles would still be considered primary sources as they were written by Lees, but other articles by Smith, Stratton-Kent and Langford would not. The journal itself was a seminal one in the admittedly limited community. QaBobAllah (talk) 01:51, 24 September 2008 (UTC)
Finally, I was about to help merge what I've done in Thelemic gematria with what you've done in English Qabalah, but sadly find that I can't. My account is too new and the article is protected to me (or from me, as the case may be, lol). QaBobAllah (talk) 01:54, 24 September 2008 (UTC)

consensus or truth

Which is more important in Wikipedia. For example, if there were a consensus that the Queen was not really the head of state of the UK but was the head of state of France and Finland, would that be ok for Wikipedia?

I think that truth is the gold standard, not consensus. However, we should strive for both.

The question is about the term of Mr. John McCain in the U.S. House of Representatives. He began in 1983. Therefore, the section title and name of subarticle should be House career of John McCain 1983-xxxx. However, the current consensus of two says that Mr. McCain started campaigning in 1982 so the section should be "House career of John McCain 1982-xxxx...."

The date of campaigning varies by politicians. Some start a year early, some two. Some secretly know they want the job years ahead of time. So the use of the year that campaigning starts is not right for an encyclopedia.

You may comment on the details of the case.

I am also asking you on the concept of truth or consensus? I say truth, first with great respect and consideration of consensus. 903M (talk) 02:03, 28 September 2008 (UTC)

Sticky Parlin, your adoptee continues to take ordinary editorial questions, such as this one (whether we group an election that takes place the year before service starts in with the service, for simplicity in table of contents and similar organizational matters) and inflate them into grandiose affronts to Wikipedia. Another good example is your adoptee's overwrought complaints about an image at the Talk:Joe Biden#More dignified photo? page. This is not very helpful! Also, your adoptee's comments like this one border on outright incivility. The McCain article is not "sloppy and/or stupid"; several people have worked many, many, many hours on it, and it is a first a GA and now an FA article. And please tell your adoptee that the comment "Getting the facts wrong is a BLP violation. BLP violators can be blocked." is totally wrong-headed. Every news organization, every author, every publisher gets facts wrong now and then; doing so is not a BLP violation unless done intentionally with an intent to grossly distort the biographical subject's portrayal, and unless that is the case is most definitely not a reason for someone to be blocked! Please tell you adoptee that talk page behavior like this is unacceptable. Your adoptee, despite being an unexperienced editor who makes frequent mistakes, is making unhelpful comments, and in a number of cases unhelpful edits, on some of the highest-profile articles in all of Wikipedia. Wasted Time R (talk) 13:16, 28 September 2008 (UTC)
I am open to suggestions. I AGF and take this as a suggestion, not as edit warring. I also note that the BLP comment was quickly removed by me before anyone else commented on it. Therefore, digging it up is digging up potential trouble. The comment was toned down almost immediately. http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Talk:John_McCain&diff=prev&oldid=241453432
My comments are never "you are an idiot, let's get the facts straight". They are always "we must get it right, let's help Wikipedia". If that is wrong, then ban Jimbo Wales (he said the first part) and let's ban everyone except vandals (as we help Wikipedia). I believe in ethics so I will usually support following the rules rather than do something controversial or bending the rules that hurt Wikipedia. Still, I will take Mr. R's comments and try to be meek. I will try to agree to the utmost in the next 3 edits and probably more. 903M (talk) 02:18, 30 September 2008 (UTC)

ugly accusations

Looking at their histories, a very aggressive political editor is accusing people of being SPA's in the talk page of Joe Biden's hair. When Mr. Biden was on TV (not the debates but when he was running outside accepting Mr. Obama's announcement), his hair looked unnatural. If I saw that, millions of others probably noticed something strange. Some people think that mention of this is to embarass him. Hair transplantation is not embarassing, much like women get a permanent wave or permanent eyebrow liner tattoo. Some actresses admit to breast enlargement.

Unlike some of the other editors, I favor information but not sensationalism. A very short one sentence mention is appropriate. A mockery is not appropriate.

What do you think?

What is embarrassment? For example, does it embarass Mr. Biden that he copied Neil Kinnock's speech? Should it be removed? How about the breast enlargement mention (very extensive) of Tara Reid? How about the cosmetic surgery of Catherine Bell? I think that the very briefest of mention of the hair is valid but, as I have always said, mockery and extensive descriptions of the hair shouldn't be done.

Should all tags be outlawed? Some think that tags are a sign of bad faith?

Your wise comments would be appreciated. I seek understanding, not fighting which is why I'm asking you instead of commenting on the Biden talk page. 903M (talk) 06:18, 4 October 2008 (UTC)

I'm reasonable and I think I'll do what I did before, which is to take a day or two break, maybe more, maybe not. Joe Biden is not what I'll look at. I think there's some assumption of bad faith and people saying they don't want something that will embarrass the person, which is not what I want nor is it a factor in Wikipedia. 903M (talk) 01:54, 5 October 2008 (UTC)

What is news, what is an encyclopedia?

What is news and what is an encyclopedia. The Murder of Tim McLean. Is that encyclopedia or is that news? I don't know. Actually, I do know. It is news and not encyclopedic BUT it may be Wikipedia encyclopedic. What do you think? I was thinking of writing about a news event. 903M (talk) 01:54, 5 October 2008 (UTC)

I don't want to delete that article, just think it is more news. Sorry, I just created an article before I saw your message. It is shocking that a little boy is so destructive. Pulling a cat's tail, I can see. Bludgeoning animals to death with a rock is something entirely different. 903M (talk) 02:19, 5 October 2008 (UTC)

argh...

oooooh! this is sooo annoying! I really want some time off. This is stressing me out far too much to be taken seriously.--Editor510 drop us a line, mate 19:36, 4 October 2008 (UTC)

Your adoptee ...

Hi Sticky. I'm really sorry, but I had to block your adoptee(s) tonight as socks of banned editor Dereks1x (talk · contribs). I'm really sorry, but checkuser confirms it :( He was the guy behind Archtransit, the admin sock, so please don't feel bad about being fooled by the guy - he's had a lot of practice and succeeds in pulling the wool over many, many peoples' eyes - Alison 06:39, 5 October 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for letting me know. I knew there was something off about the user, but I never suspected this. AniMate 14:10, 5 October 2008 (UTC)

translators

You mentioned something about how using a machine translator violates copyright. References please? It makes no sense to me. DGG (talk) 03:07, 6 October 2008 (UTC)

I happened to notice this. Hope you don't mind me responding. Any translation violates copyright. That's one of the right inherent in copyright. Only the copyright holder has the right to authorize any translation, machine or human. Bob (QaBob) 05:15, 6 October 2008 (UTC)
