Images at Encaustic tile
editYou added the images File:Bankfield Museum 080.jpg and File:Bankfield Museum 081.jpg to this article last July. I am not sure that the photos are of genuine encaustic (2 or more colour) tiles, but of a mosaic. I have raised this at Talk:Encaustic_tile#Encaustic_or_mosaic, so you may wish to comment there. editPhoto's
editHiya! Like myself you appreciate good photo's. I've just deleted what I though was a very poor quality, out of focuss, low resolution photo that was probably taken on a mobile phone, from the Education section of the Huddersfield article and also the same image from the University of Huddersfield article. However the same 'photographer has also placed an image of the Kingsgate shopping centre entrance to the Huddersfield article. That is passable as a small image however when taken to its full resolution its pretty grotty and I feel it is detrimental to the article. I wondered if you would care to take a look and comment before I get accused of being to bold in deleting them! <lol> Richard Harvey (talk) 19:30, 18 January 2010 (UTC)
- He has a fair few uploaded to commons, see his gallery [1], some are good, which is why I am surprised those I deleted were actually uploaded. Some are good street scenes, whilst others are debatable in their relevance to Wiki. I would say he's not yet got his eye in, in that the camera does not show what his eyes are seeing, with regards to getting the right image perspective. Though thats probably due to a need for a better quality camera than a Kodak EasyShare (which have a poor optical lens for anything more than a few yards away) to reduce the curvature of walls and lamp posts, etc. I haven't seen the template you mentioned, I will have to go on a hunting session. I will leave the Kingsgate image until I find something 'none Xmassy' to replace it. I don't feel a University of Huddersfield image is required on the article, partly as there is an article on the university, but having one educational establishment image there sets a precedent to include others such as Kirklees College and Greenhead College. Richard Harvey (talk) 02:20, 19 January 2010 (UTC)
- I read your message and took another look at the image, enlarged to its full resolution, then deleted it from the article. :( Richard Harvey (talk) 16:17, 19 January 2010 (UTC)

Magnificent!
editI tell you, it isn't every day a fully-fleshed, top-quality, 26k article suddenly pops up on the new page patrol. Fabulous, fabulous contribution. --PMDrive1061 (talk) 16:51, 26 February 2010 (UTC)
- I'm glad you did it too. It's getting harder and harder to find new subjects with enough documentation to make something like this from scratch. All the really good titles are taken. :) I was lucky early on to discover that Ridge Route had a red link and there was a ton of info which helped me to make it into a feature, not to mention a (sadly) retired user who got some awesome photos. I've been promising myself I'd get involved in another featured article and doggone it, I will. Thanks again for such a marvelous article. --PMDrive1061 (talk) 16:58, 26 February 2010 (UTC)

DYK length check
editI went bold and added a DYK check script to your account. Revert me at will. After bypassing browser cache (Mozilla/Safari: press Ctrl-Shift-R, Internet Explorer: press Ctrl-F5), you should get a button "DYK check" under "Toolbox" in the left toolbar of your screen. The button will appear only when it is appropriate to use the tool (say, I don't see it while typing this message). The documentation is here. To check article expansion I do the following: click "DYK check" individually, on the two appropriate versions of the article (before and after expansion, as the article history indicates) and then divide the numbers manually - the tool fails too often on autochecking. editI'm working on, and very close to getting Iowa Soldiers' Orphans' Home copyright free. How long do I have to address the prose concerns until I'm out of luck because the article isn't new enough? CTJF83 chat 04:19, 16 March 2010 (UTC)
- Nominations are discarded by age when they hit the bottom of the T:TDYK page, which might be a week or so, but, the answer is the sooner the better. Why? Because (i) some admins are not tolerant to old nomination (ii) the article needs time for reviewing after rewriting. If there are serious concerns, you might simply not have time to address them later. Materialscientist (talk) 04:26, 16 March 2010 (UTC)

editWelcome back!--Storye book (talk) 20:06, 17 March 2010 (UTC)
- And it is good to see you again as well! Had i not been so busy with other things then Wikipedia i would certainly have found the time to congratulate you with your DYK spree; I see you collected a nice amount of them while i was away. So even though it is a little late: Congratulations for all those well earned DYK's!. Since i am combining both new page and vandalism patrol, i suspect i might actually run on some of them by chance, which is always a positive thing.
- Best of luck editing and writing, and im certain i will see you around wikipedia while being at work :). Kind regards, Excirial (Contact me,Contribs) 20:15, 17 March 2010 (UTC)
- He he - you shouldn't encourage me - I might start going on about all my DYK noms I've got in the queue which aren't getting any ticks or crosses at all, due to the backlog, e.g.:
- John Evan Thomas (1810 - 1873) 10 March
- Piercebridge Roman Fort and Piercebridge 12 March
- Carlbury 15 March
- Ulnaby 17 March
- That's why I've been trying (clumsily) to help out with DYK reviewing. It's hard work, but you do learn from it, don't you . . . at least I hope so.--Storye book (talk) 20:33, 17 March 2010 (UTC)

- O well, aren't we Wikipedia editors a bit like water, always flowing around to fill all available space? After all, i became a vandalism patrol after i read a swear word in a random article over 2 years ago - and frankly, i kind of came to enjoy patrolling. By the way, if you are interested in learning - have you ever considered submitting one of your articles for GA review - or perhaps even FA review? If they get approved you could display a shiny GA or FA badge next to your DYA awards - and if they don't get approved, you will receive feedback on how to improve your article's. So if you like a challenge... :) Excirial (Contact me,Contribs) 22:10, 17 March 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks for encouragement re GA and FA reviews. I've been hesitant so far as it would be like throwing an article to the dogs. Bramhope Tunnel might survive it fairly unscathed, though.--Storye book (talk) 08:33, 18 March 2010 (UTC)
- Im afraid i'm of fairly little value regarding the judgment of GA and FA articles - So far i have made just a couple of stubs and one DYK article. For me, DYK is the limit of my writing skills (or at least the level i can be bothered with). However, seeing you made a ton of DYK's in a (very) short time, along with the fact that the article's are excellent, makes me confident you should at least try it. Even IF an article doesn't make it, it will always yield some constructive feedback that may help improve this or future article's. Just give it a try! I have not been involved in an edit war before, and I'm afraid of the "three strikes" scenario; this is why I have come to you for advice. IP 80.2.68.243 made a silly change to a geo location template on the Bramhope page yesterday, and I reverted it. The user has today deleted the same template. If I undo this vandalism, I'll be getting into an edit war. What do I do next?--Storye book (talk) 15:59, 26 March 2010 (UTC)
- In such cases, I provide detailed edit summaries and try to talk to the editor. Then (i) I either get convinced I was wrong or we develop a compromise (ii) the editor responds but I'm not convinced - then I seek advice of other editors (e.g. at a corresponding project or article talk - those some talks are rarely visited) (iii) the editor goes on with blank edit summaries and without replying - report to WP:ANEW or WP:AIV (if their changes are vandalism). Materialscientist (talk) 23:25, 26 March 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks for that. I'll copy this conversation to my talk page for future ref. I've also informed user:Keith D about it, as he watches and protects a lot of the Yorkshire geography pages. He suggested that I put a message on the nuisance IP's talk page, since others had left messages there already. So we'll see what happens.--Storye book (talk) 23:58, 26 March 2010 (UTC)
