The Tañon Strait derby, or more commonly known as the Visayas Clasico, refers to football matches between Ceres–Negros and Global Cebu, first contested in 2013. Ceres–Negros play at the Panaad Stadium, while Global Cebu play at Cebu City Sports Complex. The teams have played 11 matches in all competitions, Ceres winning 6, Global 3, and the remaining 2 having been drawn.

Both teams are regarded as the biggest clubs of the Philippines, with the majority of titles in the Philippines won by both clubs over the past few years. In addition, a majority of the [Philippines Men's National Football Team] members have or are currently playing for both clubs at the club level.

History

First meeting

The first meeting between the two teams occurred on 19 January 2013, when Ceres faced Global in the quarterfinals of the 2012–13 PFF National Men's Club Championship. The game finished 1–0 in favour of Global and was described as tough game. At that time, Ceres was representing Negros Occidental Football Association and swept the Visayas Cluster Region in San Carlos City before entering the Round of 16. While Global qualified thru National Capital Region Football Association's Top 10 of the 2012 United Football League Cup. Ceres won the tournament before entering United Football League (UFL) on the following year.

United Football League

The pair became the dominant teams in UFL having won the last 4 league titles out of 5 before Philippines Football League (PFL) replacing UFL on the 2017 inaugural season.

Philippines Football League

The Philippines Football League was officially announced on September 7, 2016 and will replace the UFL as the Philippines' top tier football league.[1] By April 1, 2017, the PFF confirmed the participation of 8 clubs including Ceres–Negros and Global Cebu.[2]

Honors

Ceres won their first title in 2013 winning the PFF National Men's Club Championship. While Global won their first title in 2010 winning the UFL Cup. There have been two occasions where Ceres and Global, finished champions and runners-up in the league, the 2015 season where Ceres finished 8 points clear, and the 2016 where Global finished 6 points clear to clinch their 3rd record league title. They also meet three finals, the 2013–14 PFF National Men's Club Championship Final where Ceres won twice in 2-legged match, the 2014 UFL FA League Cup Final where Ceres won 2–1, and the 2016 UFL Cup where Global won 3–1.
