- Mahapurush Sankardev belongs from Kalita (Baro-Bhuyan) family .The Baro-Bhuyans are divided in two groups the Adi-Bhuyans those who are rulers of old Kamrupa Kingdom and many of them are Kayastha/Kshatiryas according to Historians and the second group is Western Kannaujia Bhuyans those who are also believed to be North Indian Kayasthas/Kshatiryas by caste those Adi-Bhuyan or western Bhuyan combination is known as Baro-Bhuyans in Assamese society , those Baro-Bhuyans later on took Kalita caste as their caste identity in Assamese society ,and now every descendants of Assamese Baro-Bhuyans are known as a Kalita caste in Assam .Now every descendant of Assamese Baro-Bhuyan family claim their status as Kalita caste .
