Mahapurush Sankardev belongs from Kalita (Baro-Bhuyan) family .The Baro-Bhuyans are divided in two groups the Adi-Bhuyans those who are rulers of old Kamrupa Kingdom and many of them are Kayastha/Kshatiryas according to Historians and the second group is Western Kannaujia Bhuyans those who are also believed to be North Indian Kayasthas/Kshatiryas by caste those Adi-Bhuyan or western Bhuyan combination is known as Baro-Bhuyans in Assamese society , those Baro-Bhuyans later on took Kalita caste as their caste identity in Assamese society ,and now every descendants of Assamese Baro-Bhuyans are known as a Kalita caste in Assam .Now every descendant of Assamese Baro-Bhuyan family claim their status as Kalita caste .

Kalita is a caste which derived from ancient Kayastha or Kshatiryas family. For further proof you can see Assamese Hemkosh Dictionary. According to scholars of Assam Kalitas are origin North Indian Kayastha or Kshatirya Sudarshan Dutta (talk) 14:12, 7 April 2023 (UTC)
