Hello yet again. I regretfully inform you that the bot we were using to update the user status at Wikipedia:Highly Active Users, SoxBot V, was blocked for its constant updating. With this bot out of operation, a patch is in the works. Until that patch is reviewed and accepted by the developers, some options have been presented to use as workarounds: 1) Qui monobook (not available in Internet Explorer); 2) User:Hersfold/StatusTemplate; 3) Manually updating User:StatusBot/Status/USERNAME; or 4) Not worry about it and wait for the patch to go through, which hopefully won't take long. If you have another method, you can use that, too. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. Useight (talk) 22:26, 3 June 2008 (UTC)
Compliments!
editHi!
I was really impressed by your user page. It's kind of simple, but very impressive. Happy editing on Wikipedia.

Sendai International Music Competition
editFeel free to do whatever you want with the nomination, but I just wanted to point out that FLCs and the like aren't vote-based, in case that's why you unwithdrew the nom. In other words, although the FLC does at the moment have 3 supports and 2 opposes, the number of votes either way doesn't overrule actionable comments or suggestions to the contrary. So, if my reasons for opposing are valid, it doesn't matter that there's more votes supporting the nomination. Not a big deal, I just wanted to be clear about that. Anyways, good work so far, hope to see more improvements made soon. Drewcifer (talk) 22:41, 7 June 2008 (UTC)
- OK, guess you already knew. Never mind then! Drewcifer (talk) 22:47, 7 June 2008 (UTC)
- To be completely honest, I think the FLC is a lost cause. The more the article is improved, the less it looks like a list. So I suppose the only thing that would tip the scales back in the opposite direction is some more list-based stuff, but I'm not sure what that could possibly be, or if it would benefit the article at all. So basically, I can't support an article's featured list candidacy when I wouldn't even consider it a list. Sorry to be a downer, but I just don't see any way around the situation. Drewcifer (talk) 23:00, 7 June 2008 (UTC)
My RFB
editThank you for your comments in my RFB. Since it was only at 64%, it was a shoo-in to be unsuccessful, so I withdrew. I didn't want it to run until its scheduled close time because my intent in standing for RFB was to help the bureaucrats with their workload, not give them one more RfX to close. Through the course of my RFB, I received some very valuable feedback, some of it was contradictary, but other points were well agreed upon. I have ceased my admin coaching for now to give me time to revamp my method. I don't want to give up coaching completely, but I'm going to find a different angle from which to approach it. As for my RFA Standards, I am going to do some deep intraspection. I wrote those standards six months ago and I will slowly retool them. This will take some time for me to really dig down and express what I want in an admin candidate. If, after some serious time of deep thought, I don't find anything to change in them, I'll leave them the way they are. I'm not going to change them just because of some community disagreement as to what they should be. Will I stand for RFB again in the future? I don't know. Perhaps some time down the road, when my tenure as an administrator is greater than one year, if there is a pressing need for more active bureaucrats, maybe. If there no pressing need, then maybe not. Useight (talk) 03:02, 13 June 2008 (UTC)

FLC
editHi. Glad you spotted my comments, wasn't sure whether to post it all at FLC or not. The list's in decent shape, and shouldn't take much messing about with. And please don't even think of withdrawing the nom. I just wondered whether it might be more practical if you were going to be away, but as you're still actively here there's no earthly reason to withdraw it. As you've already discovered, it probably took me longer to type out all the odds and ends than it takes you to fix them. Have left some comments at my sandbox. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 14:34, 1 July 2008 (UTC)
- I've had a go at copyediting the prose section in my sandbox, and left a couple of comments. Please don't feel obliged to use my version :-) Once you've had a chance to have a look at it, whatever other comments I need to make will be done at the FLC page. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 11:00, 4 July 2008 (UTC)

As you may know, the StatusBot responsible for maintaining the status of the Highly Active Users was taken offline. We now have a replacement in the Qui status system. This semi-automatic system will allow you to easily update your status page found at Special:Mypage/Status which the HAU page code is now designed to read from. If you are already using Qui (or a compatible system) - great! - no action is needed (other than remembering to update your status as necessary). If not, consider installing Qui. You can also manually update this status by changing the page text to online, offline, or busy. While it is not mandatory, the nature of HAU is that people are often seeking a quick answer from someone who is online and keeping our statuses up-to-date will assist with this. Note if you were previously using your /Status page as something other than a one-word status indicator, your HAU entry may have been set to "status=n" to correct display issues. Please clear this parameter if you change things to be "HAU compatible". Further questions can be raised at WT:HAU. This message was delivered by xenobot 23:10, 8 July 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for adding a photo to this article - your syntax in the image coding was off and so the image did not display at all. I have fixed it. Your attempt to remove a perfectly good free image at the same time has been reverted. Please don't delete images from articles. The article is not overwhelmed with pictures, so there is no reason to remove them. - Ahunt (talk) 20:22, 13 July 2008 (UTC)

NIFG
editHi, As I see it, just because a site editor uses a blog format for organisational (or cheap hosting) reasons doesn't of itself make the site unreliable. NIFG is a well-researched site to which only the editor can make additions, and where appropriate he/she cites sources, e.g. on Joe Bambrick. Obviously any comments added below a section aren't usable, in the same way that comments added below an online newspaper article wouldn't be. It's listed at Wikipedia:WikiProject Football/Links#Northern Ireland as a useful reference, although it was probably me that listed it there no-one's yet complained, and I used it as a source on the featured List of Birmingham City F.C. players, though in those days no-one looked much at references...
Incidentally, I'm very impressed you took the time and trouble to add all those statcat player references; be nice if every Wiki editor (myself included) took such a responsible approach to sourcing their articles :) cheers, Struway2 (talk) 07:43, 26 July 2008 (UTC)

editI'm going to go ahead and nominate the article for DYK because it meets the requirements. I'll use the hook "...that Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's second novel Half of a Yellow Sun won the the 2007 Orange Prize for Fiction?" Cheers, Malinaccier (talk) 02:49, 27 July 2008 (UTC)

- OK, just curious. I can't think of any tool that would be able to count that on a per-month basis. jj137 (talk) 23:58, 1 August 2008 (UTC)
- It's OK, not a big deal. The only non-manual way I can think of is if one of the people that made an edit counter that counts total unique pages edited could split it down per month, as I'm sure it's possible. jj137 (talk) 00:34, 2 August 2008 (UTC)
Imperial Triple Crown
editSAFC player list
editHi, I can see it'd be clearer if you put the statcat refs into a separate column in the table, so the reader would know which were SAFC details and which were something else before clicking the link, but I'm not sure what you mean by converting them into external links. Sorry, praps I'll be brighter once I've had my tea... cheers, Struway2 (talk) 17:42, 12 August 2008 (UTC)
- Right. Yes, I do think that would be a good idea. Much clearer, both in the table and in the references section. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 18:13, 12 August 2008 (UTC)
- if you think it would work better like that, then go for it. If the FLC reviewers don't like it, they'll soon tell you ;-) cheers, Struway2 (talk) 19:56, 12 August 2008 (UTC)
- and they did, I see. Sorry, I didn't realise using embedded links ran counter to the MoS; the relevant bit would appear to be WP:CITE#Embedded links, the problem being "difficulties in associating them with their appropriate full references", i.e. author if any, publisher, accessdate, whatever else. Think with the national sources column, you might be stuck with converting them back to cite-web references.
- You might get away with the club source ones if you a) split the References section into General and Specific; b) included a full citation to statcat in the General section, including accessdate; c) added a note to the Club source column heading, worded something like "All entries in this column are sourced to the player's individual page from The Stat Cat.<ref>include another full citation to statcat</ref>". And then argue that such an approach would solve the problem with associating the embedded links with a full references, without the addition of 273 (or however many) similar references to the Refs section which would totally swamp the readability of the bottom half of the article. Especially bearing in mind that {{reflist|2}} doesn't work with Internet Explorer, so they'd all be in one long column.
- Consider asking User:The Rambling Man's opinion. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 20:53, 19 August 2008 (UTC)
- if you think it would work better like that, then go for it. If the FLC reviewers don't like it, they'll soon tell you ;-) cheers, Struway2 (talk) 19:56, 12 August 2008 (UTC)

Oxford Wikimania 2010 and Wikimedia UK v2.0
editHi there Sunderland06,
As a regularly contributing UK Wikipedian, we were wondering if you wanted to contribute to the Oxford bid to host the 2010 Wikimania conference. Please see here for details of how to get involved, we need all the help we can get if we are to put in a compelling bid.
We are also in the process of forming a new UK Wikimedia chapter to replace the soon to be folded old one. If you are interested in helping shape our plans, showing your support or becoming a future member or board member, please head over to the Wikimedia UK v2.0 page and let us know. We plan on holding an election in the next month to find the initial board, who will oversee the process of founding the company and accepting membership applications. They will then call an AGM to formally elect a new board who after obtaining charitable status will start the fund raising, promotion and active support for the UK Wikimedian community for which the chapter is being founded.
You may also wish to attend the next London meet-up if you are located near London at which both of these issues will be discussed. If you can't attend this meetup, you may want to watch Wikipedia:Meetup, for updates on future meets.
We look forward to hearing from you soon!
Thanks for reading.
It's been about two weeks since the last update, so should it be updated? If it should, I can go ahead and do that. jj137 (talk) 01:22, 1 September 2008 (UTC)
- Hah, yeah. :) Quick question- should I just take the August edit count minus the edit count for the previous two weeks? If I'm right, that would give the count for the past two weeks, which I think is what we want. jj137 (talk) 01:32, 1 September 2008 (UTC)
- OK, done. Best of luck in the finals :) jj137 (talk) 01:37, 1 September 2008 (UTC)

WBFLN
editHi - I noticed this edit the bot made undid an edit of yours. To permanently claim credit for these lists you'll need to edit the appropriate by-year summary file, e.g. WP:FL2008. The bot regenerates the list in WBFLN every time it runs (from scratch), using the by-year lists as the input - so edits to WBFLN not reflected in corresponding edits to the by-year lists will be undone by the bot. -- Rick Block (talk) 18:47, 16 September 2008 (UTC)
Robert McNeill
editIt says in his article that Robert McNeill played for the Scottish national team, but the National team archive at the SFA does not list him (I checked both the drop-down player list and search box, using various spellings of McNeal and looking for Robert, Bob, Bobby etc). The SFA list claims to be complete, so I was wondering what source you used to determine that he was an international. Cheers. --Jameboy (talk) 23:31, 21 September 2008 (UTC)

I would like to rename a page you created
editBack in May 2008 you were creating numerous stubs of SSSIs and I would just like your experienced opinion on this one - River Line (site). River Line is a disambiguation therefore (site) was added to make the title unique. I would suggest that River Line SSSI would have been a more suitable choice. Just wondering if you knew of any precedent with the naming of the SSSI articles, and would you object to a renaming. Thanks ++ MortimerCat (talk) 07:52, 28 September 2008 (UTC)

editHello and thank you for the welcome. Maybe you can answer my question. I aked at the Help Desk about this thing called global login. I clicked on the link in my preferences and I didn't understand the explanation. Does this mean that I don't have to come up with another name on another Wikipedia site? It took me at least 5 tries to get a name that wasn't taken and I don't want to go through that again elsewhere. Thanks. —Preceding unsigned comment added by LovesMacs (talk • contribs) 19:05, 5 October 2008 (UTC)
Hello, I read and reread the explanation that you linked to, and I think I get it, thank you. I wanted to know because I would like to upload some photos in the future. I've looked at some images here and they say "This is a file from the Wikimedia Commons. The description on its description page there is shown below." I gather that photos are supposed to go on that site, right?
I have to figure everything out first. The introduction and explanation about all the [, ], |, etc. is not very easy to take in. Thanks again. —Preceding unsigned comment added by LovesMacs (talk • contribs) 19:29, 5 October 2008 (UTC)
