Welcome!
editHello and welcome to Wikipedia. Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. The following links will help you begin editing on Wikipedia:
- The five pillars of Wikipedia
- Contributing to Wikipedia
- How to edit a page
- Editing tutorial
- Picture tutorial
- How to write a great article
- Naming conventions

Please bear these points in mind while editing Wikipedia:
- Respect copyrights – do not copy and paste text or images directly from other websites.
- Maintain a neutral point of view – this is one of Wikipedia's core policies.
- Take particular care while adding biographical material about a living person to any Wikipedia page and follow Wikipedia's Biography of Living Persons policy. Particularly, controversial and negative statements should be referenced with multiple reliable sources.
- No edit warring or abuse of multiple accounts.
- If you are testing, please use the Sandbox to do so.
- Do not add troublesome content to any article, such as: copyrighted text, libel, advertising or promotional messages, and text that is not related to an article's subject; doing so will result in your account or IP being blocked from editing.
- Do not use talk pages as discussion or forum pages as Wikipedia is not a forum.
The Wikipedia tutorial is a good place to start learning about Wikipedia. If you have any questions, see the help pages, add a question to the village pump or ask me on my talk page. By the way, you can sign your name on Talk and discussion pages using four tildes, like this: ~~~~ (the software will replace them with your signature and the date). Again, welcome!

Wikipedia and copyright
editHello SunshineOdyssey380! While we appreciate your contributions to Wikipedia, there are certain things you must keep in mind about using information from sources to avoid copyright and plagiarism issues.
- You can only copy/translate a small amount of a source, and you must mark what you take as a direct quotation with double quotation marks (") and cite the source using an inline citation. You can read about this at Wikipedia:Non-free content in the sections on "text". See also Help:Referencing for beginners, for how to cite sources here.
- Aside from limited quotation, you must put all information in your own words and structure, in proper paraphrase. Following the source's words too closely can create copyright problems, so it is not permitted here; see Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing. Even when using your own words, you are still, however, asked to cite your sources to verify the information and to demonstrate that the content is not original research.
- We have strict guidelines on the usage of copyrighted images. Fair use images must meet all ten of the non-free content criteria in order to be used in articles, or they will be deleted. To be used on Wikipedia, all other images must be made available under a free and open copyright license that allows commercial and derivative reuse.
- If you own the copyright to the source you want to copy or are a legally designated agent, you may be able to license that text so that we can publish it here. Understand, though, that unlike many other sites, where a person can license their content for use there and retain non-free ownership, that is not possible at Wikipedia. Rather, the release of content must be irrevocable, to the world, into either the public domain (PD) or under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. Such a release must be done in a verifiable manner, so that the authority of the person purporting to release the copyright is evidenced. See Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials.
- Also note that Wikipedia articles may not be copied or translated without attribution. If you want to copy or translate from another Wikipedia project or article, you must follow the copyright attribution steps described at Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. See also Help:Translation#License requirements.
It's very important that contributors understand and follow these practices, as policy requires that people who persistently do not must be blocked from editing. If you have any questions about this, you are welcome to leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. FiddleTimtrent FaddleTalk to me 10:57, 10 December 2021 (UTC)
Your draft article
editI saw your question. Both paragraphs removed from the draft article were direct copies of text from https://www.cse.sc.edu/~huhns/ and as that page gives no indication that the material is either a) public domain or b) licenced for re-use it was treated as a copyright violation. From the way you have signed your question I'm guessing you are Professor Huhns (you don't need to answer that) but in case you are please read WP:AUTOBIOGRAPHY explaining why it isn't considered a good idea to write about yourself. Also please remember that we have no knowledge of who is behind a user account, so we have at first sight, no way of knowing if someone is reusing their own material or not. Therefore offending material (or material which appears to be copyright offending) is deleted as a precautionary measure.
As the penultimate bullet-point above indicates we can use previously published material as long as it is licenced accordingly but it is preferred that material is rewritten. Nthep (talk) 22:20, 10 December 2021 (UTC)
- @Nthep has stated it perfectly. Even if this is your copyright you have not released it for onward use. Assuming that you may be Huhns I know that you would feel aggrieved were your intellectual property to be stolen. In the same way Wikipedia protects the intellectual property of those who have not licenced the material for onward use.
- If you happen to be Huhns, if you believe that Wikipedia will enhance your personal or academic reputation please think again. Wikipedia adds no value to you. You must add value to Wikipedia. Passing Wikipedia:Notability (academics) does that. I have no idea whether Huhn passes or not. My interest was confined to the copyright violation. You may find reading Wikipedia:Relationships with academic editors of some interest, though you are not its target audience FiddleTimtrent FaddleTalk to me 22:59, 10 December 2021 (UTC)
