- Rosiestep De nada. I was actually just about to ask you if you wanted to do the DYK nomination. I'm in one of my they are being ridiculous phases with it based on a couple of mine and Nvvchar and Victuallers recent experiences. SusunW (talk) 04:25, 23 January 2016 (UTC)

DYK for Mining industry of Cyprus
On 24 January 2016, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Mining industry of Cyprus, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the mining industry of Cyprus is synonymous with copper extraction which began around 4,000 BC? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Mining industry of Cyprus. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, daily totals), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page. |

Malouma's article is the awesome. :) Megalibrarygirl (talk) 02:07, 23 January 2016 (UTC) |
- Megalibrarygirl Thank you! I had no idea when we started we'd find so much. I just was fairly confident that we could find RS. It was a wonderful team effort. I am so used to byworking alone, but this was really a lot of fun. We should find another "victim" to tackle. ;) SusunW (talk) 03:53, 23 January 2016 (UTC)
- lol. I'm happy to help with another. What do you think of Ipigott's Ghanaian singers? Megalibrarygirl (talk) 05:01, 23 January 2016 (UTC)
- My congratulations too on this. You got us going on this, Susun, but all the others have indeed done a great job. @Megalibrarygirl: Do you mean Kenyan singers? I looked at the others and am sorry to say I did not find enough on any of them to justify a Wikipedia article, especially after the trouble with Christine Kamau (who seemed notable as an instrumentalist). But I did come across some other lists and websites with even more interesting female African musicians. I'll check them out and suggest one or two names later. The Malouma review seems have been proceeding very well. Like his name, Jaguar is always quick to jump in and has been very supportive. Glad to see you have incorporated all his useful suggestions while I was asleep.--Ipigott (talk) 08:15, 23 January 2016 (UTC)
- How about the Equatoguinean singer Patrima? See [1], [2]. Not an awful lot on her but what there is seems interesting. There's also Cap Verdean Carmen Souza [3]. I've added them to the list of red links.--Ipigott (talk) 11:17, 23 January 2016 (UTC)
- @Ipigott and Megalibrarygirl: First we need to clear Dr. B's stuff on Malouma. But, I am finding nothing at all on Patrima, but she looks interesting. It would help if we had her full name. On the other hand, Souza looks promising. I find [4], [5] and [6] right off the bat. She looks more promising to me. SusunW (talk) 15:14, 23 January 2016 (UTC)
- I have started following up on Dr. Blofeld's suggestions and will continue going through the rest - unless you prefer to handle them yourself. I agree that Souza would be much easier to do, so let's go for it.--Ipigott (talk) 15:45, 23 January 2016 (UTC)
- Carry on Ipigott I figure we can all take turns. I did Jaguar's and am perfectly content to let someone else work on the additions ;) In the mean time, I shall create a draft on Carmen as a beginning. SusunW (talk) 15:51, 23 January 2016 (UTC)

- You don't have to respond to my points, but it's your call on whether or not you think they improve the article, which should be the main concern. Producing decent quality GAs does require some perseverance. You both seem to imply that you'd both rather not have to address the points, when they're there to try to help you improve the quality of the article, rather than be a hinderance.♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:08, 23 January 2016 (UTC)
- Dr. Blofeld Thanks for the additional GA comments. I have no doubt they will definitely improve the article. They always do and always make one think how they can improve on their communication and writing skills. Not implying in any way, shape, or form that they won't be addressed. It's a team article, not mine. I want to give everyone on the team a chance to input if they want to take it on. Besides which, it's a learning opportunity. :) SusunW (talk) 16:16, 23 January 2016 (UTC)
- Yup, but I don't want either of you to find it a bore to have to tackle them! They were all minor issues, so shouldn't take very long to address!♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:34, 23 January 2016 (UTC)
- It looks like Rosiestep got the rest when I went to take a look. :) I trust your judgement, Susun, if you think we should do Carmen Souza, I'm game. I'll dig in the databases. :) Megalibrarygirl (talk) 17:17, 23 January 2016 (UTC)

Eleanor Sophia Smith has been nominated for Did You Know

You can see the hook and the discussion here. You are welcome to participate! Thank you. APersonBot (talk!) 00:26, 30 January 2016 (UTC) |
How do you do it?
You're amazing. It takes me forever to write one little 3-paragraph start class biography. Got any tips for faster editing? Do you use that visual editor? I do it all by hand, is that ridiculous? Rosekelleher (talk) 22:55, 31 January 2016 (UTC)
- Thank you Rosekelleher I don't use virtual editor. What I do is pull up a bunch of sources before I start. Once I come up with 3 or 4 sources, I start evaluating them. I run organizations they are tied to, in conjunction with names they are associated with. So for Black Cross Nursing, I ran the search as Black Cross Nurse, Vivian Seay; Black Cross Nurse, Universal Negro Improvement Association and African Communities League; Black Cross Nurse, Canada; etc. I run women's names with their maiden name and married names, if applicable. Usually that yields a few more sources. Then I read through them to see if I have covered the lifespan of a person without a lot of gaps, or if I have sufficient information to cover the topic. If not, I just keep working different combinations of searches until I have all the sourcing. Then I set up the page with the userbox, categories, authority control, ref lists and just start data synthesizing. I go through one source at a time and glean everything I can from it and then work information from the next source in. I usually end up with at least 10 tabs open all at the same time (so I can compare them easily) but try to focus on working in the data from only one at a time. If I get bogged down, I let it set for a day or so and come back with fresh eyes. I always create them in draft space and then move them to mainspace. For me, the key is prepping first. Does any of that help? SusunW (talk) 23:16, 31 January 2016 (UTC)
- Thanks! Yeah, it helps in that it tells me you're fast because you read fast and write fast and are smart. Admittedly I had been hoping to learn that there was some big red button I could push. I'm gonna go watch the idiot box now... Rosekelleher (talk) 23:28, 31 January 2016 (UTC)
- Rosekelleher :( The goal was not at all to discourage you. Trust me, I type fast, but I'm not a rocket scientist. It also helps if you write articles that are linked so that you have sources already researched. Note that this one started (Black Cross Nurses) months ago--in my head. I wrote Cleopatra White and Elfreda Reyes September, which gave me a lot of the background. I find a lot of organizations linked notable women and by following the women or the organizations, I end up with several articles. SusunW (talk) 23:41, 31 January 2016 (UTC)
- Oh, I'm not really discouraged. I just need to rest my brain. I'll be back. Thanks again! Rosekelleher (talk) 23:48, 31 January 2016 (UTC)

- ReFill works on raw urls between ref tags. It won't get them all, but it gets the basic template inserted and will catch identical refs, for example, I used it today here. Montanabw(talk) 03:18, 1 February 2016 (UTC)
Thank you for reviewing my DYK about Randy W. Berry. I know I've had many DYKs, but I've never reviewed one and I do not know how to do it, even after reading the cryptic instructions. Can you please help?Zigzig20s (talk) 19:27, 28 January 2016 (UTC)
- Zigzig20s How you got by without it is a mystery to me. I use tools. Pick an article to review and click on the review or comment box. There will be instructions at the top as well as symbols for marking whether it is GTG, GTG but hook citation is AGF, there are questions, it doesn't qualify at all, etc.
- New enough is easy, just look at the history and see if it was created in mainspace (time in draft does not count) or expanded/approved for GA within 7 days of nomination.
- Long enough. I use a tool. Instructions to install it are simple (I am NOT remotely technical, so if I could manage, I think probably anyone can do it). See Wikipedia:Did you know/DYKcheck#Using DYKcheck if you have a username If it requires 5x or 2x expansion, go to the history and pull up the historic article made just prior to the expansion. Run the character counter. Pull up the current article, run the character counter. Do the math and see if it meets the reqirement.
- No copyvios. I use a tool [7]. Sometimes even if the probability is high there aren't really any violations, so be sure you evaluate the comparisons. Obviously the tool picks up all commonalities, but that means names, titles, etc. are flagged, which clearly aren't plagerisms. It does not work for books or pdfs, so you manually have to review them.
- Neutral Just confirm has no POV.
- In-line citations must be observed for at least every paragraph except the lede.
- Images must be verified as free to use on commons.
- Hook length I verify here [8] Must be under 200 characters. The words (pictured) (as pictured) (shown), etc do not count, nor do coding marks.
- Hook citation does not have to be in a single sentence but each part of the hook must be verified by a citation immediately following the statement made. (It is not good enough to be at the end of the paragraph).
- QPQ check I use [9] Just type in the username and hit enter.
- Interesting is purely subjective IMO.
- Mark it with a symbol. Comment on each of the above, sign your entry BEFORE you save it if there are things that need to be addressed scroll up and copy the template marked "You may notify the nominator of problems with" Save. Make sure you have it watchlisted.
- Hope that all helps SusunW (talk) 19:57, 28 January 2016 (UTC)
- Hm, I will give it a try. Btw, do you think we should change the "first-ever" in the DYK for "inaugural" as you did in the lead?Zigzig20s (talk) 23:01, 28 January 2016 (UTC)
- Zigzig20s Doesn't matter IMO. I made a few edits to reduce duplications in text and to make it read smoother. If you want to change the hook, feel free. Good luck. If you get stuck, ask me again. It sounds more daunting than it is, because the tools do most of the work ;) SusunW (talk) 23:07, 28 January 2016 (UTC)
- I'm sorry, I'm discouraged. Can you please waive your requirement?Zigzig20s (talk) 07:33, 30 January 2016 (UTC)

On 2 February 2016, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Georgeta Stoleriu, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Romanian soprano and music educator Georgeta Stoleriu established a scholarship to recognize outstanding students from the National University of Music Bucharest, but never her own students? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Georgeta Stoleriu. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, daily totals), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page. |

My best suggestion is to contact the Virgin Islands Public Library system; the archives online all seem to be microfilm, which isn't veryhelpful, but librarians usually can at least point you to things.
http://www.virginislandspubliclibraries.org/contact.asp is the contact details. Adam Cuerden (talk) 22:28, 4 February 2016 (UTC)
- Adam Cuerden Brilliant! I feel certain there is some oped photo somewhere from Ike's staff, but I have literally scraped the barrel. Finally just found the congressional record tribute about her death and I've been looking all day. Thank you! SusunW (talk) 22:45, 4 February 2016 (UTC)
- It's just going to be digitization and how much of it's disseminated off of the Virgin Islands. These kind of "ignored" territories tend to not have as much online unless they have an internet-savvy advocate. Adam Cuerden (talk) 23:06, 4 February 2016 (UTC)
- Trust me, I know this. I've lived in the Caribbean. Very few archives are on line. Would that someone would digitize UWI's holdings... ;) SusunW (talk) 23:11, 4 February 2016 (UTC)

Deolinda Rodríguez de Almeida
Almost cried writing this one, Deolinda Rodríguez de Almeida. She could use a bit more before heading to DYK if you or your page stalkers are interested. --Rosiestep (talk) 15:40, 5 February 2016 (UTC)
- Fascinating, heartbreaking, inspiring all rolled into one. I've added quite a bit. The lede should probably be expanded. Decent fair use images could be captured here. Would that the documentary were in English or at least had English subtitles. SusunW (talk) 19:07, 5 February 2016 (UTC)
- I thought all that, too: fascinating, heartbreaking, inspiring. If we had a daily "poster child" for WiR, I'd make sure she had her day. Thanks for expanding her article. I'll take a look at the lede, and will get her nomed tomorrow. --Rosiestep (talk) 03:57, 6 February 2016 (UTC)

- Ipigott Very cool. Thank you Ian. I must say it was less stressful than I thought it would be what with you and Gerda checking after me on the technical parts. Besides which I thoroughly enjoyed the collaborative pieces we did. :) SusunW (talk) 14:32, 3 February 2016 (UTC)
- You did a great job. I also noticed all the other women's biographies you managed to produce in January, scientists, educators, halls of fame... And you've already made a fine start on the Black Women. I see by the way that you've now created 537 articles on the main space, which averages out to about 45 a month. That's amazing!--Ipigott (talk) 14:52, 3 February 2016 (UTC)
- Ipigott I had never counted them. I find it fun and relaxing for the most part and I learn so much about amazing people just writing about them. I try to avoid the drama on here and just produce. It's an adrenaline rush every time one turns blue. :) SusunW (talk) 15:20, 3 February 2016 (UTC)

- 45 a month is certainly incredible if you consider the quality of Susun's work too.♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:18, 3 February 2016 (UTC)
- Dr. Blofeld Thank you. That means a lot coming from you. It helps to be somewhat OCD, as I am a stickler for research before I write. It'd be far better for everyone if we could successfully correct the misconceptions about RS to allow us to use primary sources. There is a huge difference in a primary source and a self-generated source. SusunW (talk) 18:35, 3 February 2016 (UTC)
- Based on my experience, sometimes some of the finest details have to come from a primary source. If it is used sparingly and supported by a wealth of reliable sources this is perfectly fine. For things like Business executives I don't know what the "rules" formally are but some of the resume type sites like LinkedIn can often provide a good career backbone and then built on with reliable independent sources. The whole point is quality of information, accuracy and comprehension, and it so so happens that often people themselves are the best source of information about themselves. I think we need to relax a bit more in certain areas on here. I don't know what the current outlook is but I think you can get away with using the person's self published website as a source, provided that the article is well sourced to independent sources throughout. Also primary sources have greater strengths for things like career chronology and perosnal details, but can't really be trusted for documenting things like career achievements and gushing media comments so it depends on the case. The problem I think is more when an entire article is written by a primary source and no demonstration of notability in independent sources. So be a bit bolder on this, ask my opinion if you think you're overstepping the mark.♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:45, 3 February 2016 (UTC)
- Dr. Blofeld I rarely use personal websites other than to mine them for information. I do use birth records, death records and census records as often they are the only sources that can piece together a woman's history. You'd be amazed at how many people take them out for being primary sources. As if a birth record is "original research" or somehow tainted. It's pretty straight forward born where, when, to whom. Not a lot of interpretation of data going on there. But even so, if they are backed up with multiple secondary sources confirming the year, it is to me a no–brainer. Not to WP "experts" though. *sigh* SusunW (talk) 19:05, 3 February 2016 (UTC)
- I think for some of the biographies you tackle you'll often find decent info on their own websites and find less detail in independent sources. In such cases I think it's OK to use their sites, only as a last resort though if you can't source it from elsewhere.♦ Dr. Blofeld 21:38, 3 February 2016 (UTC)

And as you know Gerda Arendt the feeling is mutual. You are one of my mentors and constant "go-to" people when I need help. Thank you all. SusunW (talk) 23:33, 3 February 2016 (UTC)
- I was helped in the beginning, and remember well how good it was. Thinking of Marrante today - who left. Looking at the cabal members, how they left, were banned, died: you are what we call a Lichtblick in German, - what's that in English? And all your articles telling the reader right away when the person lived and why she was notable, for an extra sparkle! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 23:46, 3 February 2016 (UTC)
- Gerda Arendt Google translate is my best friend — "ray of hope". And I don't get credit for that. It was Montanabw who told me if I wanted to avoid AfD I needed to say right up front why they were notable and never, ever, ever submit a draft without pinging a friend to help if it got stuck. And then the fairy dust was sprinkled and I suddenly was on autopatrol :) SusunW (talk) 00:03, 4 February 2016 (UTC)
- No wonder, Montanabw is also a member of the cabal of the outcasts. Alakzi put it best for me, and left. GregJackP wrote all these excellent articles on law and justice, and left. Google translate is a friend, but doesn't get close (or perhaps English doesn't): Licht is light, and Blick is view, so Lichtblick is the light I see - at the end of a tunnel or other darkness. Marrante was so great in German-English nuances, - wish you had known her. A blick at her talk will tell you. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:15, 4 February 2016 (UTC)

- I didn't create it, read the history: a fairy named Phaedriel created it in 2007 and gave every recipient a dedicated poem, - wonderful reading, at the end of the list. Then Rlevse took over, less poetic, but consistently for three years. (You know he is PumpkinSky, I guess.) I only try to keep the spirit going ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:43, 6 February 2016 (UTC)

Following closely behind Rosie, I think with your experience of the history of women activists, you might be interested in this one. Maybe you can turn up some other sources. I'm a bit mystified as to whether she is still alive. I see she was still around in 2010 and might have been born as late as 1914. Let me know if you are interested.--Ipigott (talk) 17:21, 5 February 2016 (UTC)

- Don't worry. I just thought the first woman to have received a ministerial position would have been more widely covered, even in English. But the article is not too bad as it is. In fact I used the funeral notice in connection with her original name. As I can find no evidence of her own death, she could well still be living.--Ipigott (talk) 08:37, 6 February 2016 (UTC)

Don't know if the eulogy following deserves the label, - a helper wanted to spare me that, but I would have returned it, in Tim's trend. Will now nominate the last of the women in music! - Yes, there's a lot of small Caribbean nations which do tend to get neglected on here. You don't often see "St Kittian" biographies appearing in the new pages for instance! I remember I did a lot of work on Barbados in the early days on here as I have a book and I was astounded how much was missing, even some of the more obvious ones. And that was ten years back!♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:13, 7 February 2016 (UTC)

Your GA nomination of Doris Sands Johnson
Hi there, I'm pleased to inform you that I've begun reviewing the article Doris Sands Johnson you nominated for GA-status according to the criteria. This process may take up to 7 days. Feel free to contact me with any questions or comments you might have during this period. Message delivered by Legobot, on behalf of Adam Cuerden -- Adam Cuerden (talk) 17:01, 9 February 2016 (UTC)
- Adam Cuerden. My goal, if it's possible is to have her ready for International Women's Day. We have a month. Please let me know of anything I need to do to improve the article. Thank you very much for taking it on. SusunW (talk) 17:23, 9 February 2016 (UTC)
Hi, I'll be happy to look over the article, but I just got hit by some kind of a virus and am having trouble concentrating. If you're not in a rush, I could look at this in a few days. Yoninah (talk) 15:37, 4 February 2016 (UTC)
- Yoninah Please feel better. There is no rush. Taking care of you is always more important.SusunW (talk) 16:09, 4 February 2016 (UTC)
- Yoninah I hope you are feeling better. I'm not trying to rush you but just wanted to touch base and make sure this is still on your radar. I am hoping that I can get this reviewed as a GA so it can appear on International Women's Day on March 8th. As always, your input is greatly appreciated. SusunW (talk) 21:55, 8 February 2016 (UTC)
- Thank you, I am feeling better, but I've been gnoming around on DYK for a few hours, and am calling it a night. I hope to look at this with a fresh eye tomorrow morning. Yoninah (talk) 22:16, 8 February 2016 (UTC)
- Do you still need me to tell you that you know how to write? What an achievement! I just did a few minor copy fixes, formatting and linking. Send this on for a GA review! Yoninah (talk) 12:07, 9 February 2016 (UTC)
- Yoninah It's not that I lack confidence in the writing, but more that a trusted editor can make it better. When I am writing, I may have read the material so many times that I think I am communicating with the reader, when in actuality, I've left a crucial piece out because I assumed everyone would know it. I shall get her nominated immediately. SusunW (talk) 16:09, 9 February 2016 (UTC)
- I'm happy to help, but I think that the reviewers over at GA also look at articles with a pretty critical eye, and will tell you what's missing or misstated. Personally, I find the GA experience rather stressful. Yoninah (talk) 18:20, 9 February 2016 (UTC)

- Yoninah Please feel better. There is no rush. Taking care of you is always more important.SusunW (talk) 16:09, 4 February 2016 (UTC)
DYK for Ewa Bandrowska-Turska
On 10 February 2016, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Ewa Bandrowska-Turska, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that in 1939, a trans-Atlantic radio broadcast featured coloratura soprano Ewa Bandrowska-Turska (pictured) singing four songs by Karol Szymanowski from the Royal Castle in Kraków for the US audience? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Ewa Bandrowska-Turska. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, daily totals), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page. |
