The Denver Museum of Nature & Science has had a few names in its history. Established in 1900, it was first called the Colorado Museum of Natural History. Then, at the request of the mayor and the City Council, the institution changed its name in 1948 to the Denver Museum of Natural History, an acknowledgment to the city's long standing support. In 2000, as the Museum approached its centennial celebration, the name changed again to the Denver Museum of Nature & Science in order to more accurately reflect its mission and to emphasize the importance of nature and science for the twenty-first century.
