Germanic Umlaut

edit

Hi there, TK-462!

Welcome to Wikipedia, and thanks for your first edit! I see you added the following to Germanic Umlaut: 'Each umlaut is pronounced as if an /e/ is placed after it. For example: ü = is pronounced ue, and so on'. I'm worried that this won't make much sense to many readers of the article. Firstly, you're only talking about modern German, but the article covers all the Germanic languages (English, Dutch, the Scandinavian languages, Gothic). Secondly, I'm not sure that your description would be very helpful to an English-speaker trying to understand how ü, ö, and ä are pronounced in German. I think it would imply to most readers that ü is pronounced as two vowels, like 'oo-eh' or something like that. I take your point that a pronunciation section would be good though, especially if we could get some native-speaker sound files. I'll do some work on it, but I'd love it if you could keep participating too. Thanks for your contribution!

Just to say that I revised your section on modern pronunciation to survey a range of languages (including German), and I put a quick sketch of how the German letters ä, ö, and ü are pronounced into the header, with links to the entries on the relevant sounds. I hope this looks okay to you! Alarichall (talk) 16:27, 31 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

Hi there! I noticed that you'd had this promising looking article knocked back. One way to demonstrate Freed's notability would be to list the awards he's won. I see he has a list at http://www.alexanderfreed.com/about-the-author/. You could perhaps find some journalism on the Web that verifies these claims and cite them: one example would be the video at http://www.nbcnews.com/video/in-game/45799487. Finding some reviews of his books might help too. Just a thought. Thanks for your work! Alarichall (talk) 11:13, 13 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
