October 2024
editHi TKsdik8900. I would like to bring to your attention a small grammatical concern regarding the phrasing "Institute of Science Tokyo" on the Wikipedia page. While I understand that the article "the" may not be part of the official name as presented on the institute's website, omitting "the" is grammatically incorrect in running text.
In English, institutions and organizations typically require the use of a definite article when referenced in a sentence if there is an "of" within the name (e.g., "the University of Oxford" or "the Institute of Physics"). Therefore, for clarity and grammatical accuracy in running text, the phrase should be written as "the Institute of Science Tokyo." This follows standard conventions in English, even if "the" is not part of the official title. Cfls (talk) 17:33, 3 October 2024 (UTC)
- @Cfls: Hello. Compared to other similar university items, I grasped the point. One question I would like to ask is that the sentence on this page: "Like other national university corporations in Japan, Institute of Science Tokyo sets mid-term goals and mid-term plans, and undergoes periodic university evaluations." is grammatically incorrect? Looking at the other text on that page, it seems to me that the name of this university is intentionally missing "the", while the names of ministries, acts, and other proper nouns have it as the definite article. --TKsdik8900 (talk) 01:24, 4 October 2024 (UTC)
- Hi TKsdik8900. The sentence you mentioned is grammatically incorrect without "the" before "Institute of Science Tokyo." While the omission may reflect the official name, standard English grammar requires the use of "the" before institution names that include "of" for clarity and correctness in running text, even if it's not part of the formal name. Therefore, it would be more appropriate to say "the Institute of Science Tokyo" in this context. Cfls (talk) 14:20, 4 October 2024 (UTC)
- I understood the issue. Thank you for replying. --TKsdik8900 (talk) 02:01, 5 October 2024 (UTC)
