Speedy deletion nomination of Homeowners of Texas
editA tag has been placed on Homeowners of Texas requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about an organization or company, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for organizations and companies. You may also wish to consider using a Wizard to help you create articles - see the Article Wizard.
If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}}
to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you. Copyright problems with Homeowners of Texas
editHello. Concerning your contribution, Homeowners of Texas, please note that Wikipedia cannot accept copyrighted text or images obtained from other web sites or printed material, without the permission of the author(s). This article or image appears to be a direct copy from http://www.homeownersoftexas.org/. As a copyright violation, Homeowners of Texas appears to qualify for deletion under the speedy deletion criteria. Homeowners of Texas has been tagged for deletion, and may have been deleted by the time you see this message.
If you believe that the article or image is not a copyright violation, or if you have permission from the copyright holder to release the content freely under the Creative Commons Attribution/Share-Alike License (CC-BY-SA) then you should do one of the following:
- If you have permission from the author, leave a message explaining the details at Talk:Homeowners of Texas and send an email with the message to permissions-en wikimedia.org. See Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission for instructions.
- If a note on the original website states that it is licensed under the CC-BY-SA license, leave a note at Talk:Homeowners of Texas with a link to where we can find that note.
- If you hold the copyright to the material: send an e-mail from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en wikimedia.org or a postal message to the Wikimedia Foundation permitting re-use under the CC-BY-SA and GFDL, and note that you have done so on Talk:Homeowners of Texas.
However, for textual content, you may simply consider rewriting the content in your own words. While we appreciate contributions, we must require all contributors to understand and comply with our copyright policy. Wikipedia takes copyright concerns very seriously, and persistent violators will be blocked from editing. Thank you. —C.Fred (talk) 04:46, 19 November 2009 (UTC)
- Echoing what I said at Talk:Homeowners of Texas in case that page is deleted during cleanup: Two key issues. First, the other groups are demonstrated as notable (see the guidelines for organizations and in general). More critical is that the text I just deleted was copied verbatim from the Homeowners of Texas website. As you agreed when you posted it, "Content that violates any copyrights will be deleted." —C.Fred (talk) 04:49, 19 November 2009 (UTC)
- I can't recreate the article as it existed unless a CC-BY-SA notice is placed on the website. If the OTRS request to use the text is granted, they can replace it. I would suggest starting from scratch with an article that defines the organization and describes its activities in completely neutral text. Make sure to cite independent reliable sources, especially if articles have been written about the organization. —C.Fred (talk) 18:23, 19 November 2009 (UTC)
Conflict of interest
editIf you are affiliated with some of the people, places or things you have written about in the article Homeowners of Texas, you may have a conflict of interest. In keeping with Wikipedia's neutral point of view policy, edits where there is a conflict of interest, or where such a conflict might reasonably be inferred from the tone of the edit and the proximity of the editor to the subject, are strongly discouraged. If you have a conflict of interest, you should avoid or exercise great caution when:
- editing or creating articles related to you, your organization, or its competitors, as well as projects and products they are involved with;
- participating in deletion discussions about articles related to your organization or its competitors; and
- linking to the Wikipedia article or website of your organization in other articles (see Wikipedia:Spam).
Please familiarize yourself with relevant policies and guidelines, especially those pertaining to neutral point of view, verifiability of information, and autobiographies.
For information on how to contribute to Wikipedia when you have conflict of interest, please see our frequently asked questions for organizations. For more details about what, exactly, constitutes a conflict of interest, please see our conflict of interest guidelines. Thank you.
In this edit, you referred to it as "our nonprofit." This, coupled with your username, suggests that you work for or are otherwise affiliated with the group. —C.Fred (talk) 05:16, 19 November 2009 (UTC)
NAHB
editRegarding the NAHB activities, I would leave the text intact in the introduction. Start a section in the article on "lobbying activities," "opposition to building code changes," or something similar. Stick to statements about NAHB that can be backed up by the sources—and don't add anything unless you have sources that clearly mention NAHB. Of the links you left on my talk page, only one mentions the NAHB: and then, only to object to firefighters having their travel expenses paid before voting to adopt a new model code. —C.Fred (talk) 17:24, 19 November 2009 (UTC)
- Why can't I edit Wikipedia?
Your account's edits and/or username indicate that it is being used on behalf of a company, group, or organization for purposes of promotion and/or publicity. You have violated one or more of our rules, including rules against adding inappropriate external links, posting advertisements, using Wikipedia for promotion, and editing inappropriately with a conflict of interest. This kind of activity is considered spamming and is forbidden by Wikipedia's policies. Although Wikipedia has a great many articles on companies, groups, and organizations, it is considered inappropriate for such groups to use Wikipedia to write about themselves. In addition, usernames like yours are disallowed under our username policy.
- Am I allowed to make these edits if I change my username?
Probably not. See Wikipedia:FAQ/Organization for a helpful list of frequently asked questions by people in your position. See Wikipedia:Conflict of interest for the kinds of limitations you would have to obey if you did want to continue editing about your company, group, or organization. If this does not fit in with your goals here, you will not be allowed to edit again. Consider using one of the many websites that allow this instead.
- What can I do now?
You are still welcome to write about something other than your company or organization. If you do intend to make useful contributions on some other topic, you must convince a Wikipedia administrator that you mean it. To that end, please do the following:
- Add the text
{{unblock-spamun|Your proposed new username|Your reason here}}
below this message box. - Replace the text "Your proposed new username" with a new username you are willing to use. See Special:Listusers to search for available usernames. Your new username will need to meet our username policy.
- Replace the text "Your reason here" with your reason to be unblocked. In this reason, you must:
- Convince us that you understand the reason for your block and that you will not repeat the edits for which you were blocked.
- Describe in general terms the contributions that you intend to make if you are unblocked.

Request reason:
Daniel, I couldn't edit your Talk page or send you an email to ask why I was blocked, so I hope the following explanation reaches you and you offer guidance instead of blocking me entirely. I was trying not to abuse WP policies and posted a Userspace Draft of my article on Homeowners of Texas (HOT) to ask for feedback because I knew of three potential issues: notability, copyright and conflict of interest. I got good suggestions to improve the article and its acceptance to the WP community but never got a chance to implement them. Addressing notability and copyright issues is relatively easy, but the conflict of interest issue is a challenge since I’m the Communications Director for this non-profit. Yes, I’m trying to tell people about HOT and am the best qualified to do so. I use our website and social networking to promote HOT and hoped to use WP to provide basic educational information about the group and its role of protecting people from corporate abuse. I modeled the content from WP pages describing similar organizations. Were you turned you off by our use of reference links to our site instead of to mainstream press? I can easily fix that. WP has hundreds of articles about organizations large and small, and I’m sure that the person(s) writing them have similar conflicts. In large organizations it might not be an officer of the company but an employee or member of an association. It seems that people unassociated with an organization would have difficulty writing useful information about it. I’d be happy to speak with you by phone if you send an email with your number to waynecaswell AT homeownersoftexas.org. Thanks.
Decline reason:
Jpgordon's remarks below this notice sum it up rather nicely. You need to indicate what articles you would edit where you would not have an inherent conflict of interest. Additionally, you have not indicated what alternate username you would choose that does not represent an organization. Beeblebrox (talk) 22:08, 20 November 2009 (UTC)
If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the {{unblock}} template again. If you make too many unconvincing or disruptive unblock requests, you may be prevented from editing this page until your block has expired. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.
- Here's the deal. One of Wikipedia's guiding principles is that of a neutral point of view. Over the years we've come to the come to the conclusion that it's virtually impossible for someone as closely affiliated with an organization as you are with yours to edit articles about their organizations in an unbiased fashion. What for you is communicating about the organization is, from our point of view, promoting the company. A communications director wanting to communicate about the company is promoting, by our rather broad definition. You're probably incorrect in your assumption that the hundreds (more like thousands) of articles about organizations big and small being written by people with similar conflicts; we try to root that out on general principle. --jpgordon::==( o ) 17:27, 20 November 2009 (UTC)
Speedy deletion nomination of User:TXhomeowner/Homeowners of Texas
editA tag has been placed on your user page, User:TXhomeowner/Homeowners of Texas, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to be blatant advertising which only promotes or publicises a company, product, group or service, and which is a violation of our policies regarding acceptable use of user pages; user pages are intended for active editors of Wikipedia to communicate with one another as part of the process of creating encyclopedic content, and should not be mistaken for free webhosting resources. Please read the guidelines on spam, the guidelines on user pages, and, especially, our FAQ for Organizations.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator.
