Pointed questions
editAs a note some of my responses to your questions may seem a bit sharp. That's on purpose, and not because I'm mad. I'm just being difficult for a reason. ++Lar: t/c 00:51, 30 August 2007 (UTC)
- I can understand that it is important to build up a picture of the person you're coaching. Thanks for coaching me. Tbo 157talk 18:00, 30 August 2007 (UTC)
Interesting tool
editThis may be useful to you. --John 16:08, 8 September 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks but I don't really use this tool as it encourages users to boost their edit count, forgetting about quality of edits. But thanks again. Tbo 157talk 16:23, 8 September 2007 (UTC)
- It is useful as it separates out different categories of edit, which you may find interesting. --John 16:41, 8 September 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks, I'll have a look at it. Tbo 157talk 19:32, 8 September 2007 (UTC)

Can we go through username policy?
editWhile going through various wikipedia processes, I have realised that I may have a weakness with inappropriate usernames so could we go through things related to inappropriate usernames, WP:U, WP:RFCN and WP:UAA. Also just a note that I will be on a wikibreak from 23 September to 27 September. Thanks. Tbo 157(talk) (review) 22:53, 21 September 2007 (UTC)
- I have read through the username policy and looked at various username related cases over the last few weeks. I have discovered that discretions regarding usernames vary significantly and this was what caused me some confusion. From what Ive seen and from what I have been told from other users, I think it is best to assume good faith and only immediately block offensive or clearly promotional usernames. Most other problematic usernames should be taken to WP:RFCN for discussion. Can I ask what your opinion regarding this is? Thanks. Tbo 157(talk) (review) 10:07, 6 October 2007 (UTC)
- Personally, I'd like to see this policy made a bit more clear, and to be shaded in the direction of more tolerance of names, as with you, only immediately block offensive or clearly promotional usernames. Let me ask you a few questions too... Some time ago en:wp used to have a policy that said names with non western characters were not allowed. Is that policy still in effect? With the advent of m:SUL what should be done about users who were forced to change their userid back when? Also, see [1] what do you think of that? ++Lar: t/c 16:48, 7 October 2007 (UTC)
- I very much agree with you that the username policy should be clearer. In fact I mentioned that on the policy talk page a while back. The policy regarding non western chracters is no longer in effect. However these users are encouraged to use Western signatures and user redirects. With single login usernames, the policy for disallowing non latin usernames would have caused problems as users from wikimedia sister projects and other country's wikipedias would be able to edit on en and they may have non latin usernames. There is not much anyone can do now about users who were forced to change their username a long time ago. In my opinion for Single login usernames to work would require a more unified policy which applies to all wikimedia projects as currently different projects seem to have varying policies on different aspects of the project. Particularly in username policies, discretions vary significantly as I mentioned before and between projects as the link you posted shows. I also found this discussion while reading into the username policy - Wikipedia talk:Username/Archive 2#Protest which outlines some of what I mentioned. How am I doing?
editHi. Could you possibly give me some feedback on how I am doing overall in the coaching process. This would be greatly apreciated as it would help me to improve in my weak areas and in general. Thanks. Tbo 157(talk) (review) 18:40, 19 October 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks for your message. I've been quite impressed by your answers so far. Thank you for your patience as I know I have not always been giving this the attention it deserves. I have probably only got one more question for you and I will add it some time today. --John 14:39, 22 October 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks for the comment and for your time. I know that you are very busy and I appreciate the fact that you are coaching me. Thanks. Tbo 157(talk) (review) 16:30, 22 October 2007 (UTC)
