Re: Wikipedia in the Beginning
It would be, if it was in a format suitable for MediaWiki. I'd ideally like to copy edits from that dump to the current Wikipedia database, if there are no gaps between the latest available edit from the old dumps and the earliest available edit on the Nostalgia Wikipedia. Olympians
It occurs to me that you might not be aware of the consensus that has developed over the past five years (and which is reflected in WP:ATHLETE) that all athletes who have competed in the Olympics, whether they won a medal or finished dead last, whether they participated as part of a team or individually, whether they competed in the 19th, 20th, or 21st centuries, are automatically and without exception notable. BLP1E does not apply: athletes didn't get to the Olympics even in 1912 without years of prior notable competition. (BLP1E is meant to exclude flash-in-the-pan media sensations, hookers caught canoodling with TV stars, obscure Guinness record holders, etc., not world-class amateur athletes.) If anything, we need more articles on historic Olympians, not fewer, especially with respect to athletes who didn't compete for anglophone nations and who are vastly under-represented. --NellieBlyMobile (talk) 00:05, 27 February 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks for the note, Nellie. It would also help to prevent this sort of mass-nomination by misinterpretation of policy again if we added a little footnote to both WP:BLP1E and WP:BIO1E about Olympic events and atheletes to reflect consensus in case another newbie like me comes across the same dilemma. How about we amend that policy to reflect consensus, and add to WP:ATHLETE that neither criteria apply? :| TelCoNaSpVe :| 02:24, 4 March 2011 (UTC)
- That's an excellent idea. I'll look around tomorrow and see which Wikiproject would be the most likely to get eyeballs on the proposal. Thanks for replying! --NellieBlyMobile (talk) 04:39, 5 March 2011 (UTC)
Regarding your recent edit to WP:BLP1E: I like this idea as an "Olympic athlete" clause, and definitely support its inclusion. I don't see your rationale for including "several actors", though. The strength of the wording lies in its specificity - it applies to Olympic athletes and all Olympic athletes. I would lean towards removing the "actors" portion so the whole change isn't compromised. Technician Fry (talk) 05:00, 16 March 2011 (UTC)
- Yes, I agree with TF, and in this edit removed mention of actors. I also avoided paraphrasing WP:ATHLETE on the page, since that policy may change in some way in the future, but merely provided a wikilink to it. – OhioStandard (talk) 05:53, 16 March 2011 (UTC)
