Norwegian language speaker

Hi, this is to let you know that the Wikitongues video you added to Norwegians and Norwegian language is not a native speaker, and this is why it were removed from those articles. Placement of language videos in overly general articles

Hello. I'm interested in your addition of videos of people speaking one language or another in a number of articles, but I wonder if you'd consider adding them only to articles on those languages. For example, it makes sense to add the Afrikaans video to Afrikaans. In the article on the Dutch language, however, it's a digression from the topic the article is about, precisely because the Afrikaans language is covered in its own article. Even more so in Languages of South Africa: the article doesn't cover the languages themselves at all, only their use in South Africa. Singling out one of those languages for further examination seems to give it undue emphasis and seems off-topic; anyone who feels inclined to look specifically into Afrikaans while reading that article can, after all, browse to the article on it. Your addition of it to the article on the country, South Africa, is certainly overkill: "Here's what Afrikaans sounds like" is definitely out-of-scope for an article about a country. And Coloureds? Cape Malays? Not only are these further examples of an undue shift of focus, in these cases the video is illustrating someone who appears not even to be of either of those two groups, so it's even more off-topic.

Now I see another editor has already reverted your addition of the video to the Dutch language article, with an edit summary that indicates the same sentiment I've expressed here.

Thanks for your input! I am an intern and it's my job to try to add these videos on as many pages as I feel might benefit from their placement/where they might be appropriate. I see what you're saying and I will try to be more picky about where to put the videos if the pages really digress from them but I can't promise that I will be only posting them on that specific language page if I feel like there are others that may benefit from it. Thanks for understanding. I do understand that you've been given instructions, but keep in mind that Wikipedia's policies and guidelines as well as general practices govern the editing of articles. That includes considerations of staying on-point, avoiding undue emphasis. See WP:COATRACK, for example. Also, are you by any chance on intern with Wikitongues? I see you've continue to place videos depicting specific languages in articles that aren't about the languages, and in many cases are about peoples who don't all speak the language in question or places where not everybody speaks it. I also see that a number of other editors, sharing my opinion about that, have removed them with a similar comment. I've just done likewise, removing the videos from several dozen articles about peoples and places. Posting a video of someone speaking Lombard in an article on Lombardy is akin to going into details of Lombard grammar or phonology. Articles on the languages are where these videos are at the appropriate level of detail.

Besides that, I am concerned with the number of cases where editors have removed one video or another because, though it purports to be a native speaker, that is clearly not the case. I agree with Largoplazo here. The addition of Wikitongues videos should be restricted to the page about the language featured in the video, and with maximal oversight with regards to its illustrative value. There are cases where speakers are non-native speakers, or native semi-speakers; further, there are many videos which contain introductory portions in other languages (usually the dominant standard language of the region), which is misleading for the casual listener. Don't leave this oversight to others. If you are not in the position to judge whether a video portrays the featured language in an authentic and illustrative manner, don't add it. Per default, Wikitongues is not a WP:reliable source. –Austronesier (talk) 19:08, 12 November 2020 (UTC)

Hello again Largoplaza! First, I have not referred to any speaker as a "native" speaker since you last messaged me, so I apologize if you found some of the old videos, but please be aware that I am no longer doing so. Further, only two videos were removed as a result of this unfortunate miscategorization. In terms of posting language videos in places they do not belong, I took your advice when you messaged me many weeks ago and have stopped posting these language videos in places where they do not directly relate to the content. Since then, very few people have had critiques for me, and none have had any issues with the videos I posted that you have recently undone. I make sure when I am posting them on the country page or the people page that that page is talking at length or exclusively about that language, and only post it if it is considered an "official" language. The other reason I felt that I could continue to do this is because often when I visited the page for the country or the people, others had already posted language videos in the "language" section, and nobody had taken issue with it. I urge you to reconsider your stance on not allowing language videos anywhere outside the language page. If there is already a language section on a language page that discusses a language, I and I think many others would not feel it is off-topic if there is a language video there. As I mentioned, many pages already had a language video there when I visited them. I do not think that it would divert attention from the topic of that specific section (language) to grammar and phonology. Most people are not linguists, and listening to the official language being spoken in the country or peoples they are researching would not make them ponder grammar and phonology overly much. Last, I feel the need to kindly point out that since you posted last, only 10 of my edits have been reverted out of the hundreds that I have done, and from those 9 out of 10 have been good faith reversions. Again, I thank you for your interest in my effect on Wikipedia (clearly I must be more important than I realized), but I hope you will rethink your preference for language videos to stay exclusively on language pages and see, as I do, that they can be used to illustrate topics related to language (such as language sections) in other articles on Wikipedia. Chewa language

The video you have added of the Nyanja speaker from Lusaka is interesting, but perhaps not quite typical of Chewa. He mixes a lot of English words with his Nyanja and as he says, it seems he is multilingual in a number of other languages too. If you could get hold of someone from one of the more central areas, e.g. from Malawi, who has a firmer grasp on the language, and add that too it would be good. Conflict of interest disclosure

Per WP:PAID, "Interns are considered employees for this purpose. If they are directed or expected to edit Wikipedia as part of an internship, they must disclose."

Therefore, please provide a disclosure meeting the requirements of WP:PAID, either in the summary of every edit (chance missed), or on the talk page of all affected pages (impracticable), or -- probably the only remaining way -- on your user page.

"Minor edit" is an understatement, please don't use it

"Minor edit" has a very specific definition on Wikipedia – it refers only to superficial edits that could never be the subject of a dispute, such as typo corrections or reverting obvious vandalism.
