Hi Kathleen,

the best way to do properly formatted academic citations with with a template. These have the form:

  • Book (short):
    {{cite book | first= | last= | authorlink= | coauthors= | year= | title= | edition= | publisher= | location= | id= }}
  • Book (full):
    {{cite book | last= | first= | authorlink= | coauthors= | editor= | others= | title= | origdate= | origyear= | origmonth= | url= | format= | accessdate= | accessyear= | accessmonth= | edition= | date= | year= | month= | publisher= | location= | language= | id= | pages= | chapter= | chapterurl= }}
  • Journal article:
    {{cite journal | author= | title= (required) | journal= | year= | volume= | issue= | pages= – | url= }}

I had to do a bit of trickery to get these to display on the screen. Press edit this page on the tab at the top of the screen to see the source for the following:

Comrie, Bernard (1981). The Languages of the Soviet Union. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press. ISBN 0-521-29877-6.

This is discussed more here: Generic citations

If you have some important references which you think should be mentioned in the article, but don't want to do the mentioning yourself, you could either put in a Further Reading section at the bottom of the page, or you could stick them on the talk page.

If you have any more questions ask them here—I'll keep this page on my watchlist for a while. Cheers, Ngio 14:54, 24 July 2006 (UTC)Reply
