Orphaned non-free media (Image:Fedora9Live.png)

edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Fedora9Live.png. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 12:20, 13 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Notability of Objective-J

edit

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Objective-J, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Objective-J is an article about a certain website, blog, forum, or other web content that does not assert the importance or significance of that web location. Please read our criteria for speedy deletion, particularly item 7 under Articles, as well as notability guidelines for websites. Please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources which verify their content.

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Objective-J, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. Replaceable fair use Image:Maronexample.PNG

edit

Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:Maronexample.PNG. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Do you want to opt out of receiving this notice? Melesse (talk) 22:34, 13 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

简体字 and 繁体字

edit

Hi, thanks for your edits to Chinese verbs! I just wanted to say, I noticed that in this edit you switched out the traditional characters for simplified characters. I don't know what the official policy is on this matter, and personally I prefer simplified characters, but my rule of thumb has been to go with whatever was originally present in the article...I take the simplified/traditional character thing on WP to be similar to the rule WP:Don't switch between national varieties of English. The gist is, if an article is about something that makes it more natural to use one style, go with that (for example, an article about the ROC or HK might be more likely to be in traditional characters), and if it's ambiguous, just go with whatever the original version of the article can.

Again, these are only my impressions, and not Wikipedia policy; if you think there is a good reason to replace simplified with traditional characters, we could go ask the people at WikiProject China, who might know of an official policy.

That's all. Thank you for your contributions! —Politizer talk/contribs 08:35, 8 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

I'm pretty sure they're equally preferable—just like how American English and British English are equally preferable (with exceptions like I mentioned above...articles about the British Parliament would prefer British English, articles about American football would prefer American English, and articles about math wouldn't prefer either one over the other). I think the rule of thumb is to go check and see if the topic is more relevant to one or the other (for example, if the article is about the ROC, or about calligraphy, traditional characters might be better), and if neither one is more relevant, just go with whatever is there already. Me, for example, when I create a new article I use simplified characters because I like them and I know them better than traditional. But if I start editing an article that was already written in traditional characters, I use traditional characters for my edits as well, to keep things matching. I think the most important thing is just that within an article we're consistent.
Also, as a side note...when you leave messages at a user talk page or article talk page, you can sign your message by typing ~~~~ after it. Thanks! —Politizer talk/contribs 08:46, 8 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
