DYK for Geoffrey Bruce (mountaineer)
On 8 January 2015, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Geoffrey Bruce (mountaineer), which you recently created or substantially expanded. The fact was ... that the first time Geoffrey Bruce climbed a mountain, he and George Finch (pictured together) reached a world record height of 27,300 feet (8,300 m) on Mount Everest? You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, live views, daily totals), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page. |
Your oppose of Sarek
I don't understand it. There's no limit on the numbers of admins. If his RfA succeeds, it doesn't stop others coming forwards. But unsuccessful RfAs are likely to make people think twice about running. P.S. please excuse this gentle badgering.--Dweller (talk) 09:33, 19 February 2015 (UTC)
- I rarely vote at RFA and I thought a lot about this before opposing. I think most (nearly all?) editors would make perfectly good admins if they were willing to stand and were interested in doing at least one aspect of the work. The problem is we don't know in advance who won't be good (which is why I don't vote normally). And we usually can't throw out the bad apples even when a lot of people think they are bad. See how long the recent case took (years) to get resolved and I can immediately think of three other unresolved cases (though I've been around a long time). In the present situation I think an awful thing was done, far worse than most people would do and I'm rather disappointed that so many people seem not to mind too much. Of course people can improve but other people don't need to reform. I think an editor picked at random would probably not be so abusive. I tried hard not to be unpleasant in what I said but an oppose is inevitably not complimentary. Thincat (talk) 13:53, 19 February 2015 (UTC)
- Ah, I wouldn't have commented on an uncomplimentary oppose (in fact, I haven't) just one that didn't appear to make any sense. What you've written above is completely different from what you wrote at the RfA. Were you just trying to be gentle? If so, don't be because a) the candidate can clearly cope with it and b) from experience, I can say that the closing bureaucrat needs to know how to weigh your !vote, and if you've misrepresented your opinion that's not good. Anyway, thanks for replying. --Dweller (talk) 14:06, 19 February 2015 (UTC)
- I wondered whether you had misunderstood and, since I now realise that you did, obviously other people will have done likewise. Yes, I was trying to be gentle and I must have tried too hard (or not very well!). I'll consider changing my rationale but I'll probably end up leaving it. BTW I didn't mind you asking at all and it didn't come across as badgering in the slightest. Thincat (talk) 14:14, 19 February 2015 (UTC)

Nomination for admin?
Oh, and have you ever considered turning this redlink, blue? --Dweller (talk) 14:41, 19 February 2015 (UTC)
- Years ago, when reaching 2000 edits meant you were rather likely to be asked, I deliberately reduced my editing to avoid it! So, I suppose the answer is "yes" and, again, "no"! Thincat (talk) 14:50, 19 February 2015 (UTC)
- I've not done a thorough trawl through your murky back history of diffs, but your willingness to discuss and avoid conflict bode well. If I think you'd make a good candidate, would you accept a nomination? --Dweller (talk) 14:54, 19 February 2015 (UTC)
- No, not thorough enough to spot my vandalism ([1]). There really isn't any aspect of admin work that appeals to me and I don't feel any strong sense of duty either. So no, but thank you. Thincat (talk) 15:08, 19 February 2015 (UTC)

Second RM for Southern Apls
You took part in an RM "Southern Alps#Requested move 29 November 2015" which I closed with a "Technical close" and a move the page back to the original name under WP:RMUM,but suggesting that another RM could be started immediately. A new RM was opened one day later Southern Alps#Requested move 30 November 2015, proposing that the page is moved from Southern Alps → Southern Alps (New Zealand) with Southern Alps becoming a dab page. Your are receiving this mass message because you expressed an opinion in the first RM request and AFAICT have not done so in the second. -- Sent by PBS using MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 10:41, 5 December 2015 (UTC)
articles like this: Debate on the Hadith, are the main reason i still bother to donate my money to wikipedia. YdhaW has done an excellent job compiling these critically important areas within islamic schools of thought and teaching- into a single coherent article. considering the article was very recently created it will undoubtedly need refinement over the weeks and months to come, specifically the opening statements of the article, and the section "whats next?", should be rephrased to fall more inline with the encyclopedic standards wikipedia seeks to maintain. thank you Thincat for restoring the article and bringing attention to it here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Criticism_of_Hadith#Debate_on_the_Hadith, - The5thForce (talk) 15:44, 23 December 2015 (UTC)

The Original Barnstar | |
Amazing job on List of Mountain Bothies Association bothies! You took a subject that few people have ever heard of and gave it the full FA treatment. The DYK hook was also fantastic! Since I was the one who promoted it to the image slot, I thought it might show a conflict of interest to give you a barnstar for it on the spot, so I waited until after it appeared on the main page. Guess what? 37,379 readers agree with me! Keep up the great work! Yoninah (talk) 09:04, 25 May 2017 (UTC) |
- @Yoninah: Thank you for your message. I was pleased it had gone to the image slot, it was a very good photo for Geograph. As for the hook, at least two people complained about it (not the usual suspects) and seemingly administrative action was required while it was on the main page![3][4] The article got a lot of hits and I'll see about that when I have time. List of caves of Maryland
Hello. I'm not sure what your logic is behind the revert for deletion. Care to elaborate? That talk page is almost 99% me, so are you saying I'm at odds with myself? The only person to reply to me was from a fellow who doesn't frequent the article but was strolling by. As for the discussion itself, nothing of consequence was said, which is why I'll start stripping the article of uncited info shortly. What is left may be eligible for deletion again through AfD as almost none of the remaining material will pertain to the subject matter in any meaningful or notable way. Also, something being controversial doesn't mean that the proposal is without merit. I've laid out several valid policy reasons why this article shouldn't exist at all.
However, if you want to have a discussion, I recommend doing so beforehand and not after I start deleting stuff. I've already given a few pointers. Leitmotiv (talk) 17:18, 23 November 2017 (UTC)
- I have given my rationale on the talk page but I suspect your comment here was started before I saved it. I don't particularly disagree with much of what you say about the article although I think we should cherish as much as possible. My difficulty is merely that PROD seems to me not the best (or even appropriate) first step. I can see some useful reliable-seeming sources on the topic as a whole as well as on individual caves so I think something could be salvaged even without recourse to the books. Thincat (talk) 17:34, 23 November 2017 (UTC)
- PROD wasn't the first step. As you can see, I started a conversation on the article's talk page back in October with little to no interest. PROD was step 2. Anyhoo, I'll stop replying here and carry it forward at the article's talk page, which is what I've been trying to do since October. Leitmotiv (talk) 17:48, 23 November 2017 (UTC)
