Managing a conflict of interest
editHello, This3ndup. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about in the article Grand Rapids Police Department, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a COI may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. We ask that you:
- avoid editing or creating articles about yourself, your family, friends, company, organization or competitors;
- propose changes on the talk pages of affected articles (see the {{request edit}} template);
- disclose your COI when discussing affected articles (see WP:DISCLOSE);
- avoid linking to your organization's website in other articles (see WP:SPAM);
- do your best to comply with Wikipedia's content policies.
In addition, you must disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation (see WP:PAID).
Also please note that editing for the purpose of advertising, publicising, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted. Thank you. John from Idegon (talk) 16:49, 17 March 2018 (UTC)
- John, I was not aware of the policy, but based on the information you provided my relationship with the subject does appear to qualify. I genuinely believe the current content on the page is comprised of neutral facts that are properly sourced. That being said, I will refrain from future edits unless in accordance with the exceptions provided by the Wikipedia policy (uncontroversial edits and media files). I will not directly add any new content or remove others' additions. If you feel the need to revert or edit anything (or everything) that I've contributed to that page in light of this information I won't object. It was a good faith effort to provide better information on the subject based on public information, but I understand the concern. This3ndup (talk) 01:04, 18 March 2018 (UTC)
- We're probably ok here. Let me give you a scenario to clarify this. Let's just say you are a GR police officer. (Not asking, this is an example). If that's the case, what we have here is fine. However, if you are the public information officer, or you are employed by an advertising or public relations firm (or a non profit dedicated to promoting the city such as the chamber of commerce), then you are a WP:PAID editor and your declaration is not sufficient. Thank you for dealing with this professionally. John from Idegon (talk) 03:14, 19 March 2018 (UTC)
- I am not a paid editor, so it sounds like this declaration should be sufficient. Thanks! This3ndup (talk) 03:37, 19 March 2018 (UTC)
