Hello, Paul! There are a lot of photographs from The Queen's Birthday Party here. All are suitably licensed and of great quality. You might want to upload some of them to Wikipedia! Timeline of BBC Radio 5 Live

I have just created the above article. It's incomplete so any additions/new information would be much appreciated. Rillington (talk)

Great to see it off the ground though. I just added the Chris Evans million quid thing as that's one thing I can remember happening on Virgin. This is just a thought, but what about a Smooth Radio timeline? I did quite a lot of work on this topic when Smooth was a national radio station (see Smooth Radio (2010)) and added a lot of stuff to the years articles. I guess it still is a national network, but with local opt-outs. At the time I got the article to GA-status in 2012 there were very few good quality radio station articles. I also collated together a list of references concerning Smooth Radio events prior to 2012, which would help with some of the earlier stuff. This is Paul (talk) 14:43, 6 May 2018 (UTC)

A timeline for Smooth Radio would be an excellent addition, as would a timeline for Capital London which, like Smooth, is now a quasi-national network. I'd like to complete the BBC national stations but but my best efforts thus far for Radio 3 have only produced very few entries and certainly not enough for a timeline. And Magic and possibly Kiss as well. I think that the timelines for all these stations should go back to their first incarnations - Smooth began as Jazz FM and Magic began as Melody Radio and the very first Magic station was Magic 828 in Leeds. Rillington (talk) 12:23, 7 May 2018 (UTC)

I have removed the 'not sure about this one' addition to the 5 Live timeline (the mouse incident). I want the station timeline articles to be about the development of the stations rather than individual incidents such as the mouse incident which fit much better in the years of British radio articles. For that reason I'm not sure about most of your 2017/18 additions to the Radio 4 timeline but I am uncomfortable about removing efforts of others. What do you think? The development of the stations sounds like a good way forward so I'm happy for you to take out anything you think shouldn't be there. Probably the two events I would keep are the Prince Harry and Sarah Sands entries. This is Paul (talk) 22:33, 6 May 2018 (UTC)

Timeline of Smooth Radio

I thought I might as well make a start with this. In terms of information the article is already comparable in size with the others, but there's still more stuff to flesh out from the main articles. I'd like to mention the various music events they hosted, as well as the notable documentaries aired on Smooth when it was a national station. Also I haven't found much information from after the changes in 2014, so will need to look into that. A lot of stations have been rebranded with the Smooth name since then.

As per the others I've stuck to the station's development, but have inevitably needed to mention the Ofcom investigation into Global's takeover of GMG radio as that impacted on Smooth. If there's anything you feel shouldn't be there, then please feel free to take it out. Also I'm wondering whether we need a Timeline of Global Radio. I've discovered from my research this afternoon that they've been around for some time, and there's a lot of events involving them. This may be a better article for all the GMG radio stuff, but let me know what you think. I might also start a Heart timeline as I suspect there's enough information to justify it. Superb effort - well done. I've also added information on Jazz FM due to Jazz FM being the fore-runner, and also added events from 2014 to date, specifically about Smooth Radio on MW.

Excellent. I wasn't sure what to do about Jazz FM, but it should be included as it was the forerunner to Smooth. The Saga group also became part of the Smooth network after it was bought by GMG, so I might add a bit of information about when those stations were launched. Let me know if that would be ok. And I felt it was important to recognise that Jazz FM was the forerunner to Smooth by including the original Jazz FM launches but I deliberately did not add anything else, apart from the reasons for the change from Jazz to Smooth and the takeover of the Jazz stations by GMG, to ensure that this remains as a timeline for Smooth and not for other stations. Saga, however, wasn't a forerunner to Smooth in that sense - the stations only became part of the Smooth network because GMG bought Saga Radio. Therefore I probably wouldn't make any further references to Saga. What do you think?

I look forward to reading the Global Radio timeline. You were absolutely right to reference Global's takeover of GMG but once the Global timeline is published, some of the references to Global taking over GMG can probably be removed from this article as they are corporate events affecting all of GMG's stations rather than one station.

I have removed the two competition winner entries from 2006 as they are one-off on-air events which, as with the 2018 Radio 4 entries and the 5 Live mouse incident, fit better in the Years of UK radio articles. Rillington (talk) 00:37, 9 May 2018 (UTC)

Sorry I haven't been around for a couple of days. Real world stuff got in the way again as usual. No problem with removing the stuff. I'm happy for you to take out anything if you feel it doesn't fit with the theme of the article. I suppose I was just going to mention the start dates of the Saga stations as we've done with Jazz FM, but not actually include any other Saga information. It wouldn't be necessary to do that though. Once I've done the Global timeline then feel free to transfer anything over to that timeline that you think is more appropriate there. I think probably with Smooth's timeline all we need to include is when Global first bought GMG, and when Global transferred Smooth operations to London. This is Paul (talk) 15:56, 10 May 2018 (UTC)

Other radio station timelines

What other radio stations/companies do you think should have timelines? Heart, Capital, Magic, Kiss and if enough information can be found, BBC Radio 3 immediately come to mind. Rillington (talk) 14:39, 11 May 2018 (UTC)

All those would be doable, particularly Heart as I'm finding I added a lot of information about that. I'm afraid at times the years articles have tended to be a bit centred on the stations I listen to (Heart, Smooth, Jazz FM, Radio 2, Radio Five Live, etc). That's not a deliberate thing, it's more a case of those stations tending to be the ones I hear the most news about. As for other timelines we could create, BBC World Service is a possibility, although there's not much in the years articles about it, and maybe some of the other companies, such as Bauer Media. Slightly further a field there's RTE Radio in Ireland, and of course BBC Radios Scotland, Wales and Foyle. This is Paul (talk) 19:49, 11 May 2018 (UTC)

Compiling a timeline for the BBC World Service would be very hard to do for that very reason. Bauer Radio is a good one as is RTE although there aren't any years in Irish radio timelines on wikipedia is it would be more difficult to do. Heart would probably be the next one to do, followed by Capital, due to the high level of information on both stations being available. Rillington (talk) 15:56, 12 May 2018 (UTC)

I agree Heart and Capital are the next two to look at, but as it'll probably take me a couple of hours to collate together the information it might be a few days before I can do anything, so if you wanted to make a start in the meantime then go for it. There's also the Gold network, but that's a bit of a complicated one. Lots of local stations gave their mediumwave frequencies over to stations they named Gold or Classic Hits, and eventually they became the Capital Gold and Classic Gold networks, before merging in 2007. I guess the place to start would be with Capital Gold as the current service stems from that, and is owned by Global. This is Paul (talk) 17:33, 13 May 2018 (UTC)

Also, given that they are available across almost all of the UK, Heart and Capital are definitely the two to do next, probably followed by Magic. Gold would be a much lower priority especially as it is only available in London, Manchester, the East Midlands and Sussex. However it does have a rich history so it would be of interest and I think the way to do it would be to trace its history via Capital Gold rather than trying to incorporate all of the Classic Gold stations. Timeline of the Heart Radio Network

I have just created a timeline for the Heart network. I have stuck to the network's development and not made any references to presenter arrivals and departures and if we were to add presenter comings and goings I think it should be restricted to presenters who host shows which are heard across the entire network and not comings and goings at individual stations, including Heart London.

Great work on this. It might be worth adding some of the presenter information though, in order to give the article more weight. I notice this is 8.8K long, whereas the others are in the 20s, 30s, and even more. It may be the person who proposed the merge didn't think it had enough information or that it wasn't notable enough. Sticking with the ethos of the other articles, we could add presenter information (and I agree we should stick to national presenters, and perhaps large demographic areas such as London, Birmingham, etc), any charity stuff they've been involved with, perhaps some stuff like their Top 500, and maybe if they've done an outside broadcast from somewhere (for example, when I get round to it I want to add some of the stuff Simon Bates did on Smooth, like broadcasting from Adelaide). Thank you. I totally agree that presenter information should be included and I've just added some presenter comings and goings to the timeline. I just wanted to get the basic information presented first and then, as I did with Absolute Radio, begin to expand the timeline with presenter comings and goings, which I think should only include presenters who broadcast on the network and not on any of the local stations, not even Heart London. More Radio Timelines

I have now created timelines for Capital and for Magic and someone else has created a timeline of Hits Radio. Any additions would be appreciated. Apart from BBC Radio 3, I can't think of any major radio stations which now do not have timelines, apart from LBC and TalkSPORT and I don't intend to do timelines for those stations. Do you think that any other stations should have their own timelines? Rillington (talk) 17:08, 4 July 2018 (UTC)

I'll see what I can find. I suppose the only one I can think of now is Bauer Radio as they own a lot of stations. In the Midlands we have Free Radio, although I imagine that isn't large enough to make it notable enough for a timeline. Without checking I think they've recently been acquired by Bauer. Other than that there are only the ones you've mentioned. We could go for something like a Timeline of radio in London but that may be unnecessary as that information is covered elsewhere. I recall you suggesting a timeline for Bauer Radio before and it would sit well alongside the timeline of Global Radio. I'm inclined to agree that a timeline for Free Radio Birmingham may well be questioned on notability grounds, as might be the case for all other non-London stations. A timeline of radio in London is a possibility though as it would pull together the development of radio in London quite well. Rillington (talk) 21:52, 6 July 2018 (UTC)

Because the image you uploaded, File:LM - LUMP.jpg, had been nominated for deletion. It has since been deleted by another user. I notice (which I'll admit I didn't notice at the time) that you made a couple of other minor changes, such as music genre, etc. Generally any changes of this sort should be discussed beforehand on the talk page.
