Looks like it's time to start contributing to wikipedia, I've been too greedy :P

Glad to have you

edit

I'm a guy who dabbled in programming and loved it, then dropped it when I couldn't find anyone my age who enjoyed it as well (true, I picked it up at 12... but still). So I've got this feeling that we may get along quite well.

Just to clarify mate, I'm not all that experienced. I've actually been on Wikipedia about as long as you have. I've just been fortunate to have seen my fair amount of edit wars to have a decent grasp on the rules and regulations here.

You knowledge about anything is irrelevant. I don't know everything about anything. That's why I'm on Wikipedia... I just also have the ability to write well, and to do good research. You'll find that building a page yourself teaches you more about the subject than reading about it on Wikipedia ever did.

Some people become focused (Captain) on a certain subject. Some drift and become reverters of vandalism (janitors). Some build better programs and bots (mechanics). Some are just here to contribute (crew); that's what I am. We all have a part in keeping this ship afloat so that our lovely leeches (passengers) don't die. So whatever you do mate, don't try and aim towards a specific persona. Your role will come to be on its own.

Now that you're done with your userbox mania, ask me technical questions. I want to feel useful.

You'll see your share of vandals once you create a moderately high profile page. You'll feel a bit protective of it, and will immediately start reverting stuff. It's a phase...
As for your first question, this should sort it out: Wikipedia:Talk pages. Basically, you get the orange notification if you receive a reply on your OWN talk page. Lots of people choose to reply underneath the original message on their page, so if you ask a question, remember where to keep checking for an answer; because Wikipedia wont remind you...
And yes, this is the Wikipedian method of communication. If you collaborate outside Wiki, nothing stopping you from sharing emails.
There's no 'Learn how to write on Wikipedia'. There are so many hoops you have to jump through that you don't know they exist until you trip up. So don't bother 'cleaning up', go right in with editing. The Wiki motto; "Be Bold". Just please. please get acquainted with citations and referencing any statements you make. No pulling words out of your arse, it has to be verifiable through some external publication.
BTW, don't sit here and worry about HOW to contribute to Wikipedia. Trust me, when you do this long enough, it becomes mood based... especially if youre a Jack of all trades. On a bad mood day, you become Herr Grammar Nazi, Captain of the Vandal Abteilung. On a lazy day it's minor edits and rewordings. On a good day...hopefully you'll be outside (especially now in the rainy season), but you also end up starting articles and doing a load of research.
So do what you feel like NOW. Don't worry, you won't be stuck in the role forever :)
It's 11:15, I'm not going to go through your article atm, but remind me later. As forgetting rid of the 'orphan tag', find other pages which talk about your page, but haven't linked it yet. A quick method is copy/paste the title of your page into Wiki search, and see which pages have it in their text body. Once you've got about 5-6 links (to NON-ORPHANED articles), then feel free to remove the tag.
PS: In the tool box on the left, you'll find a button 'What Links Here'. this could be useful to you :)

Thank you for uploading File:SkiAirMixScreenshot.jpg. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the file. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their license and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. Armbrust Talk Contribs 17:05, 23 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

  • A fair-use image has certain dimension limitations, ie; you can't make it larger than a certain size. There are specifics for screenshots,so I suggest you research that yourself. Look at existing images on Wikipedia and make your own benchmark. The tag atm is fine... but the image may be too big.
  • If an article is an orphan, it's an orphan. You can't turn the world upside down trying to change it. Your article isn't the last piece of a jigsaw which connects to all the preceding pieces. It's a random one out of the box. Many articles that would link to your article haven't even been written yet. So in time the orphan tag will be removed, just obv not yet.
  • Translated or Japanese? cite them both. no google translated page. nothing off a temporary link basically.
  • Contents will be made automatically when you have more than one heading with body text(ie; more than one section)
  • Leave the redirect page, unless there is a totally unrelated thing by name of 'Crimzon clover', in which case that page should be an article.

Note to you. Stop worrying. You won't get banned for honest mistakes, so make them. I can help you, but you'll learn better doing it on your own. Make a sandbox for yourself, like I have here : User:Bigforrap/sandbox bigforrap (talk) 20:59, 23 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
