Topic feedback
editHey Tierney. Took a look at your topic page, I'm leaning towards supporting the Apostle Islands topic. Geography topics are straightforward and fun, and usually have good sources available. The Dr. Seuss and politics topic is very interesting, but when dealing with politics and ideologies, you have to work with difficult concepts such as neutral point of view, "weight", and, to be honest, with your presidential elections coming up, there could be some craziness with other editors. However, it is a viable topic, and if you feel up to the challenge, go for it. The Interior (Talk) 16:53, 16 October 2012 (UTC)
- I'd avoid the "urban myths" topic - finding good, reliable sources on this type of subject is a battle. The Interior (Talk) 16:54, 16 October 2012 (UTC)
Student orientation: how to edit Wikipedia
editHi! I hope you're excited to edit Wikipedia as a part of your class this semester! Since this is likely a new way of completing an assignment and the community norms and expectations are new to you, we've created this awesome orientation for students. It covers a lot of the basics of editing Wikipedia and ways you can use your coursework to improve the encyclopedia. It takes 1-2 hours to complete, and I believe this thorough introduction will save you time in the end. It will help you figure out how to create content that sticks and can serve as a reference throughout your editing. I hope you'll take a look and see what you can learn about the work that goes into creating good articles. Good luck with your assignment, and thanks for editing! Comments on article
editHey Mighty Ducks! Good start to your article. A few observations:
- citations need to go into Wikipedia format soon, and need to support the discussion the main text with notes at least every paragraph and whenever you state something as a fact or interpretation. WP style is different from the usual English papers, so instead of saying "Jones says in an article titled blah blah...", just give the statement or make an assertion and put the support in a citation.
- after facts are established, you need to show why they are important based on what sources say. For example, in the Yertle the Turtle section, the discussion needs to go on to report why there was opposition to a reference to "rights."
- It's important to communicate with Interior right away about where your contribution should go, in a new section of the existing Dr Seuss coverage, in the separate pages on the different books, or even in a new article. This placement will of course influence your content.
- OK, I added a further note in Interior's talk page to that effect. Webster Newbold (talk) 16:23, 1 November 2012 (UTC)
Hey folks. So, our article on Theodore Geisel currently has a section on "political views". Take a look at this section if you haven't already. As your content looks to be going into more detail than this section, we should format this as a separate article. We can make a "Main article:Political Messages in Dr. Suess" link at the top of that section. Otherwise, it will unbalance the main article. You've got a good start on your article, but Dr. Newbold's points need to be incorporated into the article. It currently reads a bit too much as an essay, instead of an encyclopedia article written in the summary style.
- Also, it would be a good idea to make a posting to the talk page of Thoedore Geisel (Talk:Dr. Seuss) announcing your plans for a split-off article and linking to the sandbox draft. There may be Suessophiles watching that page who can give you additional guidance. The Interior (Talk) 18:08, 1 November 2012 (UTC)
- Tierney, I'll put the course banner in the Dr Seuss talk page; you should add the announcement that Interior has suggested along with a link to the draft in your sandbox. The suggestion he made about doing a separate article gives you all good guidance about how to proceed. -Webster Newbold (talk) 20:00, 1 November 2012 (UTC)
Images
editHey Tierney. Took a look at the images you linked for me. The copyright status of those images are not compatible with Wikipedia's licensing. They are a mash-up: the original cover artwork would be copyrighted by the publisher/Geisel estate. Buzzfeed has slapped a watermark on them too, but I don't think Buzzfeed could claim copyright. Blogs get away with it, but we wouldn't. They are witty, though. I'll do some thinking on other image ideas for the article. The Interior (Talk) 19:47, 7 November 2012 (UTC)
