WikiCup 2012 February newsletter

Round 1 is already over! The 64 highest scorers have progressed to round 2. Our highest scorer was   Grapple X (submissions), again thanks mostly to a swathe of good articles on The X-Files. In second place was   Tigerboy1966 (submissions), thanks an impressive list of did you knows about racehorses. Both scored over 400 points. Following behind with over 300 points were   Ruby2010 (submissions),   Cwmhiraeth (submissions),   Miyagawa (submissions) and   Casliber (submissions). February also saw the competition's first featured list: List of colleges and universities in North Dakota, from   Ruby2010 (submissions). At the other end of the scale, 11 points was enough to secure a place in this round, and some contestants with 10 points made it into the round on a tiebreaker. This is higher than the 8 points that were needed last year, but lower than the 20 points required the year before. The number of points required to progress to round 3 will be significantly higher.

The remaining contestants have been split into 8 pools of 8, named A through H. Round two will finish in two months time on 28 April, when the two highest scorers in each pool, as well as the next 16 highest scorers, will progress to round 3. The pools were entirely random, so while some pools may end up being more competitive than others, this is by chance rather than design.

The judges would like to point out two quick rules reminders. First, any content promoted during the interim period (that is, on or after 27 February) is eligible for points in round 2. Second, any content worked on significantly this year is eligible for points if promoted in this round. On a related note, if you are concerned that your nomination, be it at good article candidates, a featured process or anywhere else, will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAC, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which would otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start receiving or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Category:All-American college baseball players

Tony, while working on the bios of former Florida Gators baseball players, I came across the four list articles you created for College Baseball All-America Teams (1991–1994) last year. Yesterday, I created Category:All-American college baseball players, and partially populated it with the former Gator All-Americans and the 1991 AAs for whom there are WP articles. Another editor, Muboshgu, created a new "list of" article for the 2011 AAs in the last few days. I thought you might want to start creating baseball AA articles again now that other editors are making use of your previous work. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 16:53, 6 March 2012 (UTC)

Clint Eastwood

You agree with these changes to the lead? He considers his highest grossing films as "excessive detail". Unfortunately he seems to be the self-righteous type who always believes he is right and is likely to keep reverting back.♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:25, 9 March 2012 (UTC) I don't have a problem with his wording changes but as you say Paragraph 2 changes are very questionable.♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:49, 9 March 2012 (UTC)

Would be happy to, but I'll freely admit that (AFAIK) this is the first episode article I've ever started. So some pointers and suggestions would be welcome : )
My next steps were/are working on some explanatory text for the body of the article, and to request an image for the page (preferrably something clearly showing the black set with the "floating" open window).
Not sure which are "proper templates". Is there a list somewhere I can start with? - jc37 22:08, 11 March 2012 (UTC)
See Wikipedia:Television_episodes#Important_articles_to_be_created. Use the subtemplates. Link your article in the template.--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 22:16, 11 March 2012 (UTC)

William S. Sadler

Hi Tony, I don't think we've ever run into each other before, but I am trying to get an article on a Chicagoan up to featured status and was wondering if you would look over the article. Have you ever heard of William S. Sadler? He was a prominent doctor from Chicago who started a new religious movement (kinda similar to Scientology in some ways). If you have time/are interested, I'd love if you could read over the article and offer any feedback that comes to mind. Thanks, Mark Arsten (talk) 02:31, 14 March 2012 (UTC)

Pilot (Boardwalk Empire)

I am not sure if you have noticed the new episode templating system for episodic writer and director awards. I am writing you because you were the GA nominator. "Pilot (Boardwalk Empire)" needs some new text added to describe its critical acclaim. Please have a look at all of this episode's emmy nominations for starters.--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 14:17, 13 March 2012 (UTC)

Oops. You were the reviewer.--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 14:21, 13 March 2012 (UTC)
Looking more closely at how this nomination went, maybe you can help out.--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 14:26, 13 March 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for bringing this to my attention Tony. I'll see if I have time to look into it later, though I have no particular interest in the topic, and merely steered it to GA. On the whole I support the collaborative and collegiate nature of Wikipedia, in that everyone helps out where they can, when they can, and that as editors we are all equal, so there is no need to ask permission to make an edit, nor to request that another person does so. If you are already aware of the issue, then you are probably best placed to do the work. SilkTork ✔Tea time 02:28, 16 March 2012 (UTC)

DYK

Hi, Tony. I was reviewing your Anthony Davis hook at WP:DYK and noticed that the article is not new (as in, created from scratch) nor was it really a stub when you started your expansion. Looking back now, though, I can't find where that is a requirement anymore. I thought that to qualify for the 5x expansion, the article had to start out as a stub (i.e. < 1500 characters). Is that a requirement that has been eliminated or did I just dream it up in the first place? I don't monitor the DYK rules regularly, and although I have almost 60 DYKs myself, I went through a long stretch there when I didn't nominate any, and when I started up again, a lot of stuff had changed (including the "review another nom" requirement). Can you clear this up for me? Also, I am considering reviewing AD for GA if I have time, but I'd kind of like to wait until after the season is over and all the hardware is handed out. If someone gets to it before then, oh well. Acdixon (talk · contribs) 20:06, 21 March 2012 (UTC)

Hello,

Would you be willing to be the Online Ambassador for a class at Indiana University Purdue University? The class is on Madam C J Walker. 2012 All-American table

I cahnged it because with your coding it shows as one long single column of bullets instead of 4 columns - wasn't working. If you see 4 columns I guess there is something wrong with my PC (though that might be an issue for others as well). Rikster2 (talk) 19:21, 26 March 2012 (UTC)

WikiCup 2012 March newsletter

We are over half way through the second round of this year's WikiCup and things are going well!   Grapple X (submissions), of Pool B, is our highest overall scorer thanks to his prolific writings on television and film. In second place is Pool H's   Cwmhiraeth (submissions), thanks primarily to work on biological articles, especially in marine biology and herpetology. Third place goes to Pool E's   Casliber (submissions), who also writes primarily on biology (including ornithology and botany) and has already submitted two featured articles this round. Of the 63 contestants remaining, 15 (just under a quarter) have over 100 points this round. However, 25 are yet to score. Please remember to update your submission pages promptly. 32 contestants, the top two from each pool and the 16 next-highest scorers, will advance to round 3.

Congratulations to   Matthewedwards (submissions), whose impressive File:Wacht am Rhein map (Opaque).svg became the competition's first featured picture. Also, congratulations to   12george1 (submissions), who claimed good topic points, our first contestant this year to do so, for his work on Wikipedia:Featured topics/1982 Atlantic hurricane season. This leaves featured topics and featured portals as the only sources of points not yet utilised. However, as recent statistics from   Miyagawa (submissions) show, no source has yet been utilised this competition to the same extent it has been previously!

It has been observed that the backlogs at good article candidates are building up again. While the points for good article reviews will be remaining constant, any help that can be offered keeping the backlog down would be appreciated. On a related note, if you are concerned that your nomination, be it at good article candidates, a featured process or anywhere else, will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck!
