j⚛e deckertalk 15:59, 19 November 2014 (UTC)- Note that on the English Wikipedia we generally title articles by the more common name for a subject, if Gray Scoopwing Moth is more commonly used than the species name, we can move the title. In either case, we can have a redirect from one title insure that someone looking for it under either name will successfully find the article, just let me know. Thanks for your contributions! --j⚛e deckertalk 16:02, 19 November 2014 (UTC)

- Second that. Awesome work! And I am very glad you are picking up Noctoid taxonomy, since I had a really hard time wrapping my head around it. Ruigeroeland (talk) 07:39, 25 November 2014 (UTC)
Thanks. It's starting to look archaic to see litter moths, tiger moths, etc. still in Noctuidae in Wikipedia now that they have a new family home, even if some of the other Erebidae groups haven't stabilized within the family yet. Two wishes (to make updating the taxonomy easier) would be to have access to a few more journals (e.g., in Systematic Entomology) and the ability to edit the same content in multiple related articles at once (e.g., "is a species of moth of the Noctuidae family" --> "is a species of moth of the Erebidae family" in the species pages intros). There are thousands of genus and species pages to update. Any suggestions?
One suggestion I have for the Wikipedia Lepidoptera project as a whole is to encourage any new or updated pages to use the automatic taxoboxes and consider the manual ones deprecated. The future time savings of this would be immense. Treichar (talk) 16:03, 25 November 2014 (UTC)
Please be careful to create templates in the "Template:" namespace. I've moved your page to Template:Taxonomy/Brevis. The original page will be removed from article space. —Swpbtalk 20:21, 25 November 2014 (UTC)

editHello Treichar,
I am conducting research about newcomers to Wikipedia and I was hoping to ask you some questions. I’ve noticed you’ve had some good activity recently. Is there any chance you have time in the next month to speak with me? If you are interested or have any questions, please email me at gmugar [at] syr.edu or leave a message on my talk page.
I hope to be in touch soon,
Erebidae: Pericopina
editHello Treichar, thanks again for the great work you are doing with regard to Erebidae taxonomy. I wanted to help out earlier, but did not have the stomach for it. :) Anyway, I chipped in now and reclassified all articles in the Pericopina subtribe, so you can cross those of your list (if you have one). Cheers! Ruigeroeland (talk) 16:21, 14 January 2015 (UTC)
Great! The family is so big that help is needed. I am working through the last subfamily (Erebinae) and its tribes right now. Once that is done, I think I will have all reasonably defined subfamily, tribe, and subtribe pages in place with most genera updated and assigned to them, and I will then rewrite and expand the Erebidae page. There are two main activities left in laying out the taxonomy across all the pages in Erebidae: 1. I don't know where some of the genera belong. In some cases, I am not sure if they belong in Noctuidae or Erebidae. These genera and species pages have not been updated. 2. I have skipped updating most species pages in the erebid genera due to the sheer number, especially genera with more than 2 existing species pages. So those are two good places where help is still needed. I strongly recommend switching manual taxoboxes to automatic ones wherever a manual taxobox needs to be updated (with species pages using the Speciesbox). The Noctuoidea taxonomy will surely change again, and this switch will significantly reduce the amount of work in the future without adding much right now. Treichar (talk) 16:58, 14 January 2015 (UTC)
- Regarding 1.: yeah, that might be troublesome until an outline of the family is published somewhere. Regarding 2.: I will help with that from time to time. I have no experience with the automatic taxobox, but I will give it a try when I tackle another tribe/subfamily. Good thing is that you have made a great basic structure to work from when updating all the species pages. There are indeed very many, but we'll get it done. I will ask Wilhelmina Will to chip in too. She is helping out with article creation at the moment, but I guess she would be willing to step in also. Cheers and keep up the great work! Ruigeroeland (talk) 07:40, 15 January 2015 (UTC)
- FYI: Audeini and Catocalini are also done. Cheers! Ruigeroeland (talk) 18:02, 20 January 2015 (UTC)
The last tribe articles of Erebinae are completed, and I expanded the Erebidae page. There are a bunch of genera in the Arctiinae that I will update next. Then I'll revisit the subfamily and tribe pages and focus on topics other than taxonomy. If you need any help with the automatic taxoboxes, let me know. In practice, there are 4 cases to learn, and they are easy:
- Genus or higher, article title matches taxon name, e.g., Erebidae. Use automatic taxobox template with authority field. Taxon field not needed.
- Genus or higher, article title does not match taxon name, e.g., Achaea (moth) for Achaea. Also add the taxon field: "|taxon = Achaea" without "(moth)". The corresponding taxonomy template name lacks the "(moth)" but the link field there should look like: "|link=Achaea (moth)|Achaea".
- Monotypic genus article doubling as a species page, e.g., Micrarctia. Use Speciesbox template. Set taxon to the binomial without quotes or brackets. Fill in authority with the binomial's author, and fill in the parent_authority with the genus's author. Note that the manual taxobox uses genus_authority but the automatic taxobox uses parent_authority.
- Species article, e.g., Ascalapha odorata. Use Speciesbox with the authority field. Taxon field not needed.
And in all these cases, you can also add the image, image2, synonyms fields, which are the same as in manual taxoboxes. Treichar (talk) 05:57, 24 January 2015 (UTC)
Help me!
editI cited a journal article by Reza Zahiri on several dozen relevant articles like Homocerynea. Then I noticed that the citation had a typo. The name is misspelled as Reze instead of Reza. Is there a fast way to fix all those typos at once?
Treichar (talk) 05:26, 24 January 2015 (UTC)
- The only way to fix it will be to replace it in each article you added the reference to.- McMatter (talk)/(contrib) 16:36, 24 January 2015 (UTC)
- If you had a full list of articles it might be possible to use a semi-automated tool such as AutoWikiBrowser, but it's probably easier to do it manually. Huon (talk) 16:40, 24 January 2015 (UTC)
