edit--- HELP: Needs Userbox code? ---
Copied from Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)#HELP: Needs Userbox code? (Drbogdan (talk) 00:53, 18 September 2017 (UTC))
IF Possible - At present,{{User UBX/WikiGlobalEdits}}
(or "User:UBX/WikiGlobalEdits" ) on a user page (for example, see userbox below - or - in the middle right column of the "User:Drbogdan" profile) - requires that a specific UserName be manually added to the "Global Edit Counter" ( at https://tools.wmflabs.org/guc/ ) - and then - the resulting edit counts needs to be manually added to the template ( for example,{{User:UBX/WikiGlobalEdits|[https://tools.wmflabs.org/guc/ 55,002]}}
)
QUESTION: Is there a way of performing this procedure more automatically - by adding relevant coding?
Thanking you in advance for any help with this - Enjoy! :) Drbogdan (talk) 21:00, 17 September 2017 (UTC)
- You can ask for template help at Wikipedia:Requested templates. I have coded it to automatically make the link based on the page name.[1] Wikitext doesn't have access to edit counts or query results so that part can only be automated if a bot or other tool periodically stores the counts for users of the userbox. They could be stored in a central page like User:UBX/WikiGlobalEdits/counts and automatically be read from there but somebody (not me) would have to code and run the bot. It could be requested at Wikipedia:Bot requests. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:21, 17 September 2017 (UTC)
- By the way, the userbox currently says "on Wikipedia" but https://tools.wmflabs.org/guc/ includes all Wikimedia wikis, e.g. Commons, Wikidata and so on. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:25, 17 September 2017 (UTC)
- There also exists a MediaWiki module to allow a special variable to expand to an edit count but it is not enabled and may never be (it was proposed and challenged, if I remember). There's an optional JS gadget for users to see their count (but that obviously doesn't update it for other editors). —PaleoNeonate – 22:37, 17 September 2017 (UTC)
- @PrimeHunter and PaleoNeonate: Thank you *very much* for the *Excellent* comments - and suggestions - they're all *greatly* appreciated - may have to do a bit more homework with this to sort things out - in any case - Thanks again for the help - and - Enjoy! :) Drbogdan (talk) 00:19, 18 September 2017 (UTC)
