I am sorry that I am very new to Wikipedia and not particularly skilled on carrying out either editing or pages moves: helpful and considerate advice would have been be more welcome than destructive criticism. All I wanted to do was to put up a page about Dr Louisa Martindale who in my opinion is notable, certainly here in Brighton . I suspect that not one of the <editors> to these pages have in fact read her autobigraphical book <A Women Surgeon> or that of her sister <From One Generation to Another> . No reason for the award of the CBE is given so none is citied. This is my first visit to Wikipedia and will be my last: the <editors> appear to be a club of critics who happily descend like vultures upon new and tender meat.... but from the safety of their armchairs rather than actually looking at original sources, all under the impression that a proliferation of links equals academic superiority. Wikipedia is notorious for disseminating incorrect information and I can now clearly see how perpetuation of errors is manufactured. Mrs Martindale was never a <sufragette>. I have studied Dr Martindale and her mother for some years now and I maintain that my opinion of their value to women's history both local to Brihgton and Sussex and in general is as good if not considerably better than yours. I do not use the word <lesbian> about her and never will.

For this reason alone as far as I am concerned the pages on the Martindale women can be deleted ASAP - and also the one I was going to write on Mrs Martindale. Val Brown (talk) 12:42, 17 December 2008 (UTC)Val Brown 17 December 2008

Confusion

You have created a few pages, with moves and redirects, to the point where I am now somewhat befuddled. Apparently there are two people named Louisa Martindale: one who is a doctor and one who is not. To be clear, you should create two pages: one titled simply Louisa Martindale, and the other titled Louisa Martindale (doctor) (or some other such term that will clarify). This is the standard Wikipedia naming convention. (I should note that neither subject appears to be notable enough for their own article.) WikiDan61^ChatMe!_ReadMe!! 15:42, 16 December 2008 (UTC)

Hello Ms. Brown, we'll just have to agree to disagree on that, and I hope I phrased it delicately enough in the article: I've tried to place the words in the mouths of scholars, so to speak. But I do think (and the American academic community of Victorian scholars agrees, as far as I can ascertain) that there are so many different 'lifestyles' (I hate that word) captured under the euphemism you cite that the phrase is not always useful. Then again, the US is in many ways more prudish, and much can be gained here from some openness. That's what I think, at least, but I'm sure you've also noticed that many of these women now seem to be exhumed and their personal lives delved into. Sometimes that goes too far, but I think on the whole it's a useful project to investigate the past more decisively. Anyway, I'm glad you started the article; you've certainly sparked my interest. (And of course this woman was notable, no matter the AfD process.) Espresso Addict and I have been working on her mother's article; neither of these women will ever be threatened with Deletion from Wikipedia again, I should think. And also, I hope the WP community has't lost you--my library does not have your book, but I'm sure a couple of these hospitals deserve entries too. Your contributions are valued, even if they are sometimes criticized and often "edited mercilessly" (I cite from the screen below). Rest assured, mine are too.
