Welcome and Dan Shea (Record Producer)
editHi Vin473! Like me, it looks like you're relatively new to Wikipedia. So...
Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions.
I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:
- The five pillars of Wikipedia
- How to edit a page
- Help pages
- Tutorial
- How to write a great article
- Manual of Style
I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! I've been enjoying it, although there's a lot to learn.
Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~ ); this will automatically produce your name and the date. If you need help, check out Wikipedia:Questions, ask me on my talk page (although, like I said, I'm almost as new as you), or you might ask HamatoKameko who was the more experienced editor who welcomed me.
I noticed that your article on Dan Shea does not really have good references yet, at least "good" in the sense of what I think Wikipedians would accept as verifiable from a reliable, third-party published source with a reputation for fact-checking and accuracy. In addition to improving the article, adding some "good" references would also avoid someone nominating your article for deletion as being not notable. You might also look at the guidelines of how the concept of notability applies to topics related to music. I did a quick check online to try to give you an example of what you might use but didn't come up with anything perfect, but here's one you might consider:

If you have anything from a newspaper, article or book (even if it's not online) I think you can use that. Also, you can improve the reference section by putting in citations right in the article where they appear. This takes a little learning and getting used to, but again would both improve the article and make it less likely to be nominated for deletion. While you're learning how, you might use this tool: http://toolserver.org/%7Emagnus/makeref.php. You fill in the appropriate information for the reference and then copy and paste what you get after pushing the "get reference wiki text" into your article at the appropriate spots. You would also add right below the References section title at the bottom (without the spaces, but I don't know how else to show you this): { { reflist } }

Disambiguation of Dan Shea
editHey Vin473. I've noticed you added some new references, good work. The billboard article was especially a good find. I'll vote to keep if anyone tries to delete as it seems to be both notable and with good references now. Also, I tried to get to Shea by just searching on Dan Shea and came up with some Canadian actor and stunt coordinator by the same name. So you'll see that I added a hatnote to Dan Shea so it now links directly to Dan Shea (Record Producer).--Ludasaphire (talk) 00:59, 23 February 2009 (UTC)
Learning
editThis is a test. Is the proper way to respond in talk page?
Vin473 (talk) 18:49, 23 February 2009 (UTC)
- I think it's customary to respond right in the section where the question came from. And to indent using colons, like I've done here.--Ludasaphire (talk) 23:09, 23 February 2009 (UTC)
Hi Ludasaphire
editThank you very much for your help. Yes, I'm very new to Wikipedia, but over time, I plan to contribute articles on various people in music and film. I do have a question or two, if you have the time to respond. (If not, it's ok.)
1) If there are two (or more) people with the same name, how do you set it up so the first page you see when you enter the name in Wikipedia is a page that gives you a choice between the two (or more) people/articles? For example, I entered John Smith and instead of going to an article about say John Smith, the English chancellor and then having hatnotes referring to other John Smiths, it immediately gives you choices (the Michigan State football coach, the English missionary, etc.). This seems better to me as it doesn't favor one person/article over another....
2) Also, I couldn't find any way to make fonts smaller or bigger (or even change fonts...)
3) And I'm trying to figure out how to make an article look a bit more tricked-out (tables, colors, etc.....)
Again, thanks so much for your help. Vin473 (talk) 19:19, 23 February 2009 (UTC)
- I don't have lots of time, right now, to respond, but I'll give it a try with some quick answers:
- 1) I know you can create a disambiguation page. I've never done it, but I have added to a disambiguation page before. The problem, here, is that it would require a move of Dan Shea to something like Dan Shea (stunt coordinator). I think we could figure out how to do that, but I'm not sure what the etiquette is, for example if we need to ask, get a consensus, or if we can just go ahead and do it.
- 2) I just know how to bold and italic and both, but that's it.
- 3) The best advice I can give in terms of adding tables, pictures, etc., is to go to similar articles, go to edit, and copy and paste the things that look good and edit the text to match. At least, that's how I've been doing it.
- Good luck!--Ludasaphire (talk) 03:25, 24 February 2009 (UTC)
- Ludasphire, Thanks again. This really helps! Vin473 (talk) 16:46, 25 February 2009 (UTC)
- Nice job, Vin473, with moving Dan Shea and creating the Disambiguation page. You are now officially ahead of me in figuring this place out! --Ludasaphire (talk) 03:27, 2 March 2009 (UTC)
Hi Popcult101
editHi, Thanks for your contributions. I'll probably be adding more to this particular article (mostly to familiarize myself with Wikiworld), before going on to other articles. Vin473 (talk) 19:27, 23 February 2009 (UTC)
