I love messages! Even if you just want to say hi, I'd love to hear from you. If it's not apparent enough from my username that I love classical music...feel free to talk over Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, ETC, and I'll be very pleased to chat with you about it. Click here to post a new message. I'll always reply on your talk page, unless you don't have a username, so unless you want to have to keep checking back here, it would be a good idea to sign your messages using four tildes (~~~~). Please add new comments at the bottom with a relevant message heading. I archive every 30 message headings...archived talk can be found at the right. And thanks for talking to me!
Thanks to Sango for the design of the archive table, etc. and to Tito for the beautiful colors of this and my userpage. Thanks, guys!
Update: If you are waiting for a reply from me and it's been more than a month, please leave another note, because it's extremely likely that I forgot to reply. Thanks!--ViolinGirl♪00:46, 13 July 2006 (UTC)

It depends on how much you edit in that half hour. If you spend that time editing flat out, then I'm sure that is enough time. If you can average 10 to 20 edits a day (more on some days, and less on others) then before long you will have an impressive edit count. If you spend that time almost exclusively on cyrptoderk's, then you'll soon become experienced and respected. However, if you were to make admin in the future, you may need to spend a little more time online....
Cheers Banes06:46, 29 December 2005 (UTC)
Sorry to butt in unanounced, but I saw the discussion was about adminship. ;). There really isn't a necessary time period that you need to spend here to become an admin, it mostly is a matter of dedication to the project in the long run. Most users don't look at "Oh, this user spends only half an hour a day on Wikipedia", but rather at "this user has been here for four months and has done substantive edits." I know that I spend a lot of time here, but I usually am doing other things at the same time, and I may check sporadically here.
However, in your case, after running an edit analysis on your account, the thing that might cause you problems if you decided to go for adminship right now would be a lack of Wikipedia namespace edits. You have A TON of User space edits, but I know that I look for a user's involvement and interaction with other users by seeing how much he/she frequents WP:RFA and WP:AFD, among others. It does not need to be a substantial involvement, perhaps a few minutes each day, but it does make a difference.
Also, another thing that helps are article-namespace edits. For example, I did not accept nominations for adminship until I had done major work on at least one article (in this case, Geology of the Moon). It is quite daunting to take work by oneself, so you might want to join a WikiProject that interests you.
Well, it is as Titoxd says. It would be wise to get into some area of articles on wikipedia. Keep up the good work (that admin coaching program sounds good) and you'll do fine. Happy to help. Banes13:06, 29 December 2005 (UTC)
Violin Girl: Thanks for your message. I believe my article "Olivia Barclay" was vandalized by someone who did not use a Wiki name. A tag was appended to the article saying it was to be "cleaned up" to match Wiki standards. As it was written quite adequately, I couldn't figure out why this had been done. Nevertheless, I tightened the article to remove anything that might be considered excess language. I finally realized that the tag had been placed there anonymously by someone who did not identify themselves, and hence was unlikely to come from someone who actually is paid to edit Wiki. Can you refer me to any online information on this sort of hit-and-run and what to do about it?

Foist of all, thanks for the picture; I think all articles that pertain to tangible things should have pictures. Makes it feel all encyclopedia-like, dontcha know. (I'm guessing that might be a picture of your own chinrest, no?)
But (nitpicking time is here again), the picture raises some questions: your caption identifies it as a Guarneri type, which our article says attaches to the left of the tailpiece. But it looks to me like the type (which is on my violins) that attaches over the tailpiece, in the center. Is this so? or am I just misreading the picture?
In any case, no big deal, although it would be nice for the article to be internally consistent. I'm not going to lose any sleep over it.
By the way, since you put in that stuff about violinist's "hickeys" (which I like; that's the technical term for it), you do know the three telltale signs of a violinist (at least one who practices enough), don't you? The hickey's one: the others are calluses on the left-hand fingers, and short fingernails. --ILike2BeAnonymous19:55, 29 December 2005 (UTC)
Hey, what about the freakish bony bulges just below the wrist? They're usually more prominent on a violinist if they've been playing long enough... IvanP19:26, 30 December 2005 (UTC)
You know, those little "molehills" that I've only really noticed in any real prominence on seasoned violinists...IvanP19:30, 30 December 2005 (UTC)
sigh* Roll up your sleeve if you're wearing long sleeves. With the back of your hand facing up, look past your hand down towards your arm proper. There's a little bump on the "outside" edge of your wrist. That thing.IvanP19:39, 30 December 2005 (UTC)

Hi ViolinGirl! Good to meet a fellow violinist, by the way! :-) I used the New Grove (online version) for the details, and as far as I know (and it knows) the correct spelling is Jaime. (either his birth name, or middle name, is Eduardo, since they have it in parentheses). I was shocked too; amazing there was no entry yet. It probably would be worthwhile to go through and see if there are other major fiddle players with missing entries (wondering with anxiety if Hilary Hahn will light up blue or red...) Recently I've been hearing radio announcers pronounce it "Jamie", though I used to hear it pronounced as in Spanish "Hi-me." Cheers! Antandrus (talk)15:36, 30 December 2005 (UTC)
User/vandalized template
Latest comment: 18 years ago2 comments1 person in discussion
Sure, I don't mind talking about the bot. It uses the python wikipedia (pywikipedia) bot, which anyone can download and run.
At the moment my bot has been focussing on userbox work, like the User vandalized it did to your userpage. What I did was tell the bot to check every page in the "What links here" for Template:User vandalized (since Template:Userbox/Vandalized redirected there). If a page contained the text "{{userbox/Vandalised" it replaced it with "{{User vandalised" (eg, the diff for your userpage).
To actually do this I ran the line in my command prompt:
python replace.py -ref:"Template:User vandalized"
The program then asks for what text to find, and what to change it to (I also have to account for capitalisation).
(Note: If you are going to run your own bot then I have left out some vital information so ask me again before you try to run it.)

Hello, just thought I'd drop by a fellow violinist... By the way, have you ever suffered through Alexander Borodin's Second? It's lovely stuff, but boredom and pain for the firsts. *sigh...* IvanP18:19, 30 December 2005 (UTC)
The only advice I can give is to drop everything and use Dominant strings until your dying day. Because they are the greatest. Ever. :D IvanP19:25, 30 December 2005 (UTC)
For all we know, it might be weather (humidity can do funny things) or storage issues. Perhaps if you googled it, you might stumble across some user reviews... (also note my response to "the anonymous one's" Chinrest comment above) IvanP19:29, 30 December 2005 (UTC)
Happy New Year! Have you tried Tonica strings? Roughly equivalent to Dominants; some say without the surface noise under the ear, but I don't know about that part. I do know they are cheaper in the US these days, from outfits like Southwest Strings. I like the pretty white/red spirals on the tail end. It's been fun helping with your chinrest page-- thanks for the opportunity to help! :-) Just plain Bill04:34, 2 January 2006 (UTC)
Can you help me see the bigger picture?

Is there some way to see or print the tree of connections created by Categories for a given area, or within 3 or 4 connections of a given page? I have trouble getting my head around how all the pages link, without a schematic of some type. In areas of my expertise I see artilces everywhere, but can't get clear enough in my mind all of the links - this stops me from suggesting proper reorganisations of legal knowledge. Hope you can help or refer me to someone who can.

Yea CryptoDerk's Vandal Fighter is great, I user CDVF and the CVU's IRC channel at the same time to spot my vandalism :-D lol. Happy editing. KnowledgeOfSelf | talk21:21, 1 January 2006 (UTC)

You have been temporarily blocked from editing for vandalism of Wikipedia. If you wish to make useful contributions, you may do so after the block expires.
Kidding! You havent been blocked! On the contary, here is a Barnstar for you!
Hey I wrote all that rubbish when I was a newbie! :) I hope I didnt scare you all the way to death's door, but if I did, then you would probably would not have replied to the barnstar message :)..... It was a pleasure, well deserved. Sorry to have scared you. I changed the header name so people dont really think I blocked you, btw. (Not that I could block you though.) Feel absolutely free to drop me a line whenever, about whatever, standard rates. P.S. I still don't know what ROHFL means. Banes20:48, 2 January 2006 (UTC)
Oh sorry, I typed the above before recieving your message. I went offline after saving it, apologies. And no, as you may have guessed, I am not an administrator. I would be honoured (or honored, if you prefer) if you would nominate me. But, I dont think myself ready and experienced enough for the responsibilities of adminship. (There are other reasons, but I would like to get to bed sometime tonight, but I would like to be an admin one day, in the near future.) I am glad you believe I should be an admin, it means a lot to me. Anyway keep up the good work and hopefully I'll be nominating YOU sometime soon! P.S. What would you have written in the nomination comments section? If you cant think of anything right now then dont worry, I was just curious... Banes21:22, 2 January 2006 (UTC)

Yeah, the clown is fast, he sometimes beats me, and I have rollback... ;) But yeah, thanks for doing it. As for the blocks... well, I was trying to block User:Titoxd (with a space at the end), and guess what happened... :( Titoxd(?!? - help us)23:11, 2 January 2006 (UTC)

on the kasier permanente talk page--someone is attempting personal identification of a user (me) for unclear reasons. sorry to bother you--but that is disturbing.
I pointedly did NOT make a personally identification of this person, even though I know exactly who he is. I have only stated the bias of someone who has been throwing around a lot of (false) accusations.

I was at 68.39.174.238's talk page, and saw the barnstar you gave to him/her. I clicked on your IP userpage, and then felt stupid because I didn't realize it was you. I don't know why I'm telling you this, except maybe to tell you that I appreciate you on wikipedia. The barnstar you gave me was much appreciated. I've given out several since, and some told me it was the first one they got. Thanks for being a good example! --ViolinGirl♪01:30, 3 January 2006 (UTC)
I am glad to hear that I am appreciated. You have absolutely no reason to feel stupid! Let me state that know, as I believe that you have already become a fine user, and I would support you for RfA in due time. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK, AND KEEP PASSING OUT THE BARNSTARS - IT IS ONE OF THE NICEST THINGS YOU COULD DO FOR SOMEONE. Glad to hear from you again, too. See (well, considering that I can't - being several thousands of miles away : ), write) you later,

I'm touched. Although, you couldnt really call me a "blocker", as I usually ask an admin friend to do that for me. I am grateful for your confidence in my abilities. Even though I am not an admin, as always, feel free to ask me for help where I can be of assistance. Cheers Banes07:54, 3 January 2006 (UTC)

Well it looks like Sango123 pointed you in the right direction! It is most likely that Sango and I will be your "coaches", so, I look forward to getting started when Titoxd assigns everything...
Yup, I was homeschooled, which has it's ups and downs, but in balance it is pretty cool. If I hadnt been homeschooled I'd still be in school...Are you finished yet? What system were you on? Nice to hear that you too were homeschooled! Banes06:54, 4 January 2006 (UTC)
Hi there. I would have replied earlier, indeed I did, typing out the whole message, but I was blocked. The curse of sharing an IP with about a 500 000 people I guess...
At the moment things are very boring for me, as I am still on holiday until Febuary. But hopefully I'll enjoy the course when it begins, and be able to study at the University of Cape Town next year...
Grade wise, I understand how one can get confused when homeschooling...So you are going to college this year? See you around the wiki Banes20:40, 4 January 2006 (UTC)
The Kit Violin and the Violino Piccolo
Latest comment: 18 years ago1 comment1 person in discussion
Thanks - my comment was a response not to any expert knowledge on my part (I'll check my Oxford Compact first though... and it lists Kit, but not Violino piccolo. That's what comes of its being Compact, too...) -
was a consequence not of any knowledge of mine, but of someone's claim, in an article referring to one, that the two were the same. (Ah. See Concerto...) Leading me to wonder why, if so, we had articles on both. I should have considered the possibility, too, that the person was simply mistaken...

Hi there. To answer your question, you should only use {{db}} on articles that fulfil one or more of the criteria for speedy deletion. All other articles that you don't consider worthy of inclusion on Wikipedia should be listed on WP:AFD. Personally, I think the article in question should be deleted, but if we want to be really uptight about policy (as we probably should, at least usually) then it should be done through AFD. - ulayiti(talk)01:40, 4 January 2006 (UTC)
Dog Training
Latest comment: 18 years ago1 comment1 person in discussion
Hi, thank you for taking a look at the dog training article. I am still not that happy about lines such as As pack animals, dogs have natural instincts that favor training. or It is crucial for the trainer and the dog to attend class together, to learn more about each other and how to work together. or in fact most of the work. These seem very POV and I can provide references for the above 2 at least that counter those claims. Can you provide references for what you write? Cheers -localzuk12:24, 5 January 2006 (UTC)

I wouldn't worry too much about what the IP'ed user said, they wished you a good evening, and nothing more. If you need any more written translation help, I have skills in this most worthless subject :)
