WikiCup 2024 February newsletter

The 2024 WikiCup is off to a flying start, with 135 participants. This is the largest number of participants we have seen since 2017.

Our current leader is newcomer   Generalissima (submissions), who has one FA on John Littlejohn (preacher) and 10 GAs and 12 DYKs mostly on New Zealand coinage and Inuit figures. Here are some more noteworthy scorers:

As a reminder, competitors may submit work for the first round until 23:59 (UTC) on 27 February, and the second round starts 1 March. Remember that only the top 64 scoring competitors will make it through to the second round; currently, competitors need at least 15 points to progress. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAN, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges (Cwmhiraeth (talk · contribs), Epicgenius (talk · contribs), and Frostly (talk · contribs)) are reachable on their talk pages. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. WCE/WCD/WRD

Hey voorts. Thanks for closing the RSN RFC. While it's fresh in your mind, would you mind updating the listing at WP:RSP. I neglected to do so when I closed the last RfC, and quibbles over the listing's wording led in part to the recent kerfuffle. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 04:06, 17 February 2024 (UTC)

Sure, but the current listing is WP:THEARDA and includes some sources that weren't discussed in this RfC. Should I break out those three into a separate listing? voorts (talk/contributions) 04:12, 17 February 2024 (UTC)
I would think so, but you're the expert right now! Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 04:20, 17 February 2024 (UTC)
Done. voorts (talk/contributions) 04:58, 17 February 2024 (UTC)

Mn state seal redesign

documenting criticisms of the seal design is a neutral perspective. All statements can be supported by references. Sofistic8 (talk) 20:44, 17 February 2024 (UTC)

It was not phrased in a neutral tone. Criticisms like that must be attributed and cited with reliable sources. voorts (talk/contributions) 20:45, 17 February 2024 (UTC)

Tagging pages for deletion

Hello, Voorts,

I was looking at an editor's user pages and they had no User Talk page. However, just a few days ago, you tagged an article they created, Elmedia Player, for speedy deletion. You used Twinkle to tag the page so Twinkle should have posted a notification about this tagging on their User Talk page and the page would have been created.

Please check your Twinkle Preferences and a) make sure that the "Notify page creator" box is checked off and b) make sure that ALL of the CSD criteria boxes are checked off as well. Also, when you are tagging a page, you can see if the "notify page creator" box is checked off in the deletion box and that serves as a double-check to make sure things are correct. You shouldn't uncheck this box in most circumstances unless the editor is indefinitely blocked or a vandal. But right now, the editor doesn't even know that the article has been deleted or why it was deleted so it is very, very important that you provide notifications to content creators so they are aware of what is going on. Thank you for checking your Twinkle Preferences. Liz Read! Talk! 05:17, 18 February 2024 (UTC)

@Liz Hi Liz. I've never changed those settings and just took a look and none of the CSD boxes are unchecked. My CSD log also shows that a notification was made via Twinkle, and I clicked through and there is one here: User talk:Yulateli#Speedy deletion nomination of Elmedia Player. voorts (talk/contributions) 05:46, 18 February 2024 (UTC)

Good closure

Hello,

Thank you for reading through and closing Wikipedia:Reliable_sources/Noticeboard#RfC:_WCE-WRD/WCD. You wrote a very good summary, both there and in the entry at WP:RSNP.

Regarding Wikipedia:Reliable_sources/Noticeboard#RfC:_OW-JP-AH, it did not attract many commentators, despite I think that there is enough precedent for a deprecation. Do you think it should be re-opened with a shorter and more neutral statement? Æo (talk) 03:49, 21 February 2024 (UTC)

@Æo I won't opine on whether deprecation or another option would be correct, but I think that there's been sufficient prior conversation to open an RfC. voorts (talk/contributions) 16:10, 21 February 2024 (UTC)
