The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

him -ing
editHi, Vossron.
I saw your addition to Wikipedia:Lists of common misspellings/Grammar and miscellaneous, and I don't get it. What is the error you're targeting, and how does this search work? I don't think I've ever seen "him -ing" or would want to see "his -ing". Bryan Henderson (giraffedata) (talk) 22:08, 21 December 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks, I bet you can make it clear! The common error is "I didn’t appreciate him returning the car with the gas tank empty." It should be: "I didn’t appreciate his returning the car with the gas tank empty." See https://brians.wsu.edu/2016/05/19/gerunds-pronouns/ Ron (talk) 22:13, 21 December 2022 (UTC)
- Oh, I see. That's a good common grammar error that would be nice to have fixed in Wikipedia, but it doesn't work on these pages, because they are supposed to be lists of links you can use to search for the offending articles in order to correct them. As far as I know, you can't make Wikipedia search for articles with "him" followed by a word ending in "ing" (and you really want to do "them" and "it" too, anyway).
- However, I see thousands of these just using some particular common gerunds, e.g. "him being", "him doing", "him going". Maybe you should add a few of those to the list instead. (If you do, be sure to include the quotation marks in the search phrase so you don't just get every article containing the words "him" and "being"). Bryan Henderson (giraffedata) (talk) 01:01, 22 December 2022 (UTC)
- Now understanding, my change was wholly ineffective, so I removed it. Perhaps someday there will be a catch-all possibility. Ron (talk) 20:45, 22 December 2022 (UTC)
Watchlist
editTo answer your question, if you don't want email notifications of edits made to certain articles, then take the article off your watchlist. I think by default, whenever you make an edit, Wikipedia adds that article to your watchlist unless you unclick the "Watch this page" checkbox just before saving your edit. More info at Help:Watchlist. You can turn off ALL emails for all watchlisted articles; see Help:Watchlist#Email notification. Grorp (talk) 16:43, 5 June 2023 (UTC)
- These emails are for pages *not* on my watch list. I have read that some bots can send such emails, so I suspected that was the case with your edit. Ron (talk) 16:59, 5 June 2023 (UTC)
