RepRisk

edit

RepRisk is a provider of business intelligence on environmental, social and governance [ESG]risks. [1] [2]

The company runs an ESG database on the performance of companies, projects, sectors and countries, which identifies ESG risks, such as environmental degradation, human rights abuses and corruption that according to RepRisk, can lead to financial, reputational and compliance risks. [3] [4]

RepRisk’s headquarters are in Zurich, Switzerland and they have an analyst hub in Manila, the Philippines. Other analysts are based throughout the US, Europe and Asia. [5]

Methodology

RepRisk’s analyst team searches and analyzes negative incidents, criticism, and controversies about companies and projects. Their research approach does not include any information provided by company themselves; instead, information that is available in the public sphere from various third parties, including media, NGOs, think tanks, governmental bodies, newsletters, blogs, etc. [6] [7]

The company offers information on activities related to the 10 principles of the UN Global Compact. [8]

Examples of ESG data usage

UBS in 2010 decided to further strengthen its environmental and social risk management program by identifying controversial areas in which it would not do business, or where it would only conduct limited business under strict pre-established guideliness and turned to RepRisk in 2011 for ESG data. [9]

'RobecoSAM' as an integral component of its Corporate Sustainability Assessment [Dow Jones Sustainability Index Assessment] monitors media and stakeholder commentaries and other publicly available information to identify companies' involvement and response to environmental, economic and social crisis situations that may have a damaging effect on their reputation and core business by using RepRisk. The results can reduce a company's Total Sustainability Score and thus affect its inclusion in any of the DJSI Indices. [10]

The Government Pension Fund of Norway one of the world's largest investors with over 600bn euro in assets and is considered a leading player in responsible investment worldwide is using RepRisk’s ESG data for ethical screening, among others. [11]

Research Papers based on RepRisk data

[12]

- “Responsible Investment and the Chinese Stock Market (ESG Alpha in China)” by chael L.Barnett (US), Xing Chen ( Chinese), Andreas G. F. Hoepner (German) & Qian Li (Chinese) from the University of Oxford and University of St Andrews [13] [14]
