Michelle Hinn

edit

A tag has been placed on Michelle Hinn, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done because the article seems to be about a person, group of people, band, club, company, or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable. If you can indicate why Michelle Hinn is really notable, you can contest the tagging. To do this, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page and leave a note on Talk:Michelle Hinn, explaining how Michelle Hinn is notable. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself.

Please read the criteria for speedy deletion (specifically, articles #7) and our general biography criteria. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this.Seraphimblade 01:59, 22 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Please note that the reason I nominated for deletion was not because the article was written poorly-it in fact is written quite well, and "poorly written" is never a reason for deletion in itself anyway. The reason I've left the tag up is that I'm still a little unclear on Ms. Hinn's notability, could you please state which of the guidelines under WP:BIO you believe she qualifies under? If you can show this I'll happily withdraw the nomination myself, I certainly am sometimes mistaken. :) I searched Next Gen Magazine's website for the name but the only thing that comes up is a general entry for "Top 100 Women In Gaming"-no way to find out where she placed on that or how much content was written about her. If she was quite highly placed and the subject of a lengthy feature article, this may well qualify her under the first criterion (exceptionally notable in her field, subject of independent articles). If she was simply on a list it likely would not. Are there any other independent, secondary sources which have found her notable enough to mention? This would help as well. After looking further, it appears you are the subject of the article? I would first like to say it's a great project you're involved in, gaming certainly has to be one of the most difficult areas in accessibility for the disabled and I'm glad to see it's getting taken on. I've done some work myself in that vein, though it certainly was not to the same scope, when I did MUD code I did a good bit of consultation with our blind players to make many in-game systems usable with screen reader software.
I would like to suggest a couple of alternatives. Firstly, if I'm correct that you are Michelle Hinn, you could certainly place a biography and overview of your efforts on your user page. Also, there's no requirement that offline sources cannot be cited such as the newspaper article you mentioned-in fact a mix of on- and offline sources is generally the best overall. Probably the best way to cite such a source would be in standard MLA or APA format, so that readers can easily locate the material to read more at a library or the like. Finally, there is an existing article at Game accessibility, which seems to cover the subject quite well. As the chair of the group, it would certainly be good to add some information there, even if it doesn't require an entirely separate article. As it's generally quite difficult for a person to objectively add information about themself, I would be happy to assist in reformatting the article and adding information if you would like. Actually, it now appears there's enough source material and establishment of notability to keep the article (though of course if you'd like to place information about what you do on the user page that's great too!). I've changed my vote on the AfD accordingly given the new information. You might find the guidelines at WP:AUTO helpful on how to work with the article in the future, and probably should as it suggests identify yourself on the article's talk page.
Certainly never thought you were trying to deliberately do wrong, if I gave that impression please accept my apology! I very much appreciate your civility through this and hope I've been of help, if I can be any further please don't hesitate to ask. Seraphimblade 23:01, 2 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
