Ike Williams

Hi, I wanted to let you know that I've deleted the update you provided about Ike Williams' testimony to the US Senate in 1960. This content needs to be re-written so that it can be more easily read, including the correction of several misspellings and typos. In 1961 Ike Williams testified in front of congress on the matters of anti trust in boxing. In his testimony he exsplaind the he was boy cotted and could not get a fight until he found a manger from the guild, even though he had 24 fights in Philadelphia. He explained that in 3 fights he did not receive his money, known as purses. those fights Jesse Flores in Yankee Stadium, for the lightweight title on September 23, of 1948; Beau Jack in Shibe Park, Philadelphia, on July 12 of 1948;. In those fights the money owed was $32,500; $32,400; and $30,000 respectively. He said in these cases he had the boxing association hold on to the money, only to find out later that they gave the money to his manger who claimed to have fallen on hard times and spent the money. Ike Williams in all those cases he was the one who payed the taxes on the money.

Then Ike Williams testified that on he his manger was offered $30,000 for him to throw a championship fight against Freddy Dawson in Philadelphia on December 5 of 1949, in which He declined. Then ten minutes before the fight he finds out the judges were told if Ike Williams does not win a by a knock out that the fight will go to Dawson. Upon hearing this Ike Williams, has his trainer call in major members of the press there and tells them to come back after the fight he has a story for them. Ike Williams won that fight and tells the media after words that he heard a rumor that the fight was fixed if he did not win by a knockout. Ike Williams figured that the Judges upon hearing that he called the media got scared and did not fix the fight. Ike was fined $500 for his comments to media.

Ike also recalled a fight Kid Gavilan on January 28 of 1949 in at Madison Square Garden, in which he was offered $100,000 to throw the fight. Again, Ike Williams did not take the money, an action he regretted because he lost the fight even though all the paper said he won. This implied that just as with the fight with Dawson, the judges were told to fix it, though Ike Williams in his testimony would not go out and say that.

Then Ike Williams tells a similar story in which he lost his lightweight title in a bout with Jimmy Carter on May 25 of 1951. In this story again he is offered to throw the fight, this time for $50,000. Again, Ike said he regretted not taking the money as he lost the fight in a similar fashion to as before.

Ike Williams said he never took the money because to many people were counting on him and that too many of his friends bet there money on him for him to give up. he added that though after all this he found out who his real friends were. Ike Also Testified that all boxers are ask to take bribes even the best.

Hi, I don't mean to be overly picky, but I think the article section would benefit from a bit more encyclopedic formatting. I'd suggest that you really focus on the key elements of the testimony, rather than try to include a narrative of the entire testimony. I've taken a stab at restructuring the content, to highlight the most easily told parts of the testimony. I think you may still want to tweak it further. Thanks for sticking with the editing. It will get easier! Here's the updated text:

Congressional Testimony

In 1961 Ike Williams testified before congress on the matters of antitrust in boxing. In his testimony Willams claimed that all boxers (even the top ranked) were asked to take bribes and when he refused, he was boycotted from fighting. Further, he explained even though it was very difficult to find a manager to represent him during this boycott, he was finally able to secure one from the Manager’s Guild, though it did not turn out well. He testified that for three different fights, one of which was a lightweight title bout against Jesse Flores in Yankee Stadium on September 23, of 1948 and the another against Beau Jack in Shibe Park, Philadelphia.(what was the third fight?) In those fights the money owed was $32,500; $32,400; and $30,000 respectively though he received none of the money as the promoters had given the funds to his new manager who spent it on himself.

Regarding the corruption to which Williams had testified, he related two specific examples:

• He was offered $30,000 to intentionally lose a championship fight against Freddy Dawson on December 5, 1948. Williams went on to win that fight and hold a press conference after the fight where he exposed the attempted bribe. He was fined $500 for his comments to the press.

• On January 28, 1949, in a Madison Square Garden fight against Kid Gavilan, he was offered $100,000 to throw the fight, and though the press reported that he should have won, the judges ruled against him.
