Maya Hero Twins illustration

Hi Waglione. Unfortunately, the bas relief in that image you have based your rendered version on is not a real or authentic pre-Columbian Maya sculpture. Instead, I believe it to be a creation by the guy who illustrated the (rather silly) 2000 esoteric "Maya oracle" book, Wisdom of the Maya: An Oracle of Ancient Knowledge for Today by Ronald Bonewitz. In fact, that image is used for the book's front cover illustration (see here), and images of this that you may find on the internet clearly come from this source. The illustrator of this book (and its accompanying "oracle card" set) has designed a series of Maya-themed pictures with the appearance (but only the appearance) of being "real" sculptural reliefs. While the illustrator has obviously been inspired by combining elements from genuine pre-Columbian Maya iconography, his illustrations are not actually faithful reproductions of authentic sculptures but rather are overlaid with a design concept to suit the faux shamanistic purposes of the author's 'retelling' of supposed 'ancient Maya wisdom'.

As such the illustrations of his creations are under copyright, and so incidentally I'd presume that derivative works such as your renders are at risk of copyvio.

Even if the originals were to be faithful reproductions of authentic precolumbian Maya bas reliefs, I don't think that your version would be useful illustrate authentic Maya iconography. For eg, a number of the elements visible in the original are obscured/altered in your version, such as the descending bird figure and the headdress bundles—elements with iconographic meaning. IMO at least your version is too impressionistic/non-realistic to have much value in depicting the subject.

I'd be suprised if there was not already out there on wiki some img that (authentically) depicts the Hero Twins, at least in part. In any case it shld not be that difficult to locate usable genuine reproductions, such as codex or out-of-copyright reproductive drawings. Regards --cjllw ʘ TALK 00:10, 23 March 2009 (UTC)

Carissimo Waglione era un sacco che non aprivo più la mia pagina inglese, ma gli eventi italioti mi hanno riportato in queste terre libere: qui non sono il fantasma di un wikisuicida. Per fortuna che quello irritabile ero io. Pensi veramente che il progetto medicina sulla wikipedia italiana sia recuperabile o scrivi quelle cose solo per sfogarti? Nessuno si accorge di niente perché nessuno conosce la medicina. Pensi che si potrebbe provare a coinvolgere qualche giornalista su quello scempio o ami ancora la wikipedia italiana al punto da non volere che la si sputtani pubblicamente? A questo proposito, sulla Repubblica del 1-6-2009, è uscito un commento di Odifreddi sull'ignoranza degli argomenti scientifici tra gli umanisti, il quale è molto illuminante, e spiega perché, se scrivi cazzate su argomenti scientifici non se ne accorge nessuno o pensano che sia irrilevante, mentre se sbagli la data di nascita di Dante ti linciano. Carissimo Waglione, ti pare che mi sarei perso lo spettacolo? L'ho seguito minuto per minuto. Ai buffoni gli brucia perché si sono fatti prendere in castagna. Ho tentato anche un patteggiamento, ma non l'hanno accettato; avevo proposto un bell'oblio generale delle mie e delle loro magagna: non hanno accettato. Il bubbone è esploso e ha manifestato pubblicamente la loro inettitudine e i loro deliri di onniscienza. Adesso è finito lo spettacolo, forse, ma loro non hanno imparato la lezione.
