Edit Filters

edit
  • These types of restriction can be imposed by edit filters. Provided that there are not too many live at the same time, it would not be a problem. For example suppose we edit war over this page the edit filter
(user_name == "WereSpielChequers" | user_name=="Rich Farmbrough") & (article_prefixedtext == "User:WereSpielChequers/Edit Warring")
will catch all our edits to the page. (Demo version in 1 - log at https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:AbuseLog&wpSearchFilter=1 ) All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 16:35, 16 August 2015 (UTC).Reply
Clearly the removal after 24 hours/1 week etc. woudl be another administrative task. All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 16:43, 16 August 2015 (UTC).Reply

WikiProjects

edit
In my experience, the best way by far to reduce edit warring is by including edit warriors of both sides in a wikiproject that has among its members some neutral people that have a mediating influence. WP:SLR reduced the occurrence of edit wars to 1/4.
However, the feature still is a neat idea. It could also be used for topic bans by referring to categories like this:
(user_name == "WereSpielChequers") & (category == "Military tactics")
BTW, you are right about the discrepancy between vandals and edit warriors; it's not fair. Another reason I see for this is that blocking vandals immediately is not effective since they simply create a new account, which is something an otherwise goodfaith editor is less likely to do. — Sebastian 21:41, 26 August 2015 (UTC)Reply
