Would you like some help?

edit

I noticed a posting regarding you at WP:ANI and read the thread at Wrong Planet. If you would like some help in understanding and dealing with wikipedia policies, I would be happy to do what I can. It can be confusing at times. If you'd like some help, answer back here, and I'll get back to you. --Nuujinn (talk) 23:47, 9 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

Likewise, I'm happy to help you as well. I myself have PDD-NOS, so I know that it can be quite confusing here on Wikipedia. We'd be more than happy to help you out. The Blade of the Northern Lights (話して下さい) 02:06, 10 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

Your name has been mentioned in connection with a sockpuppetry case. Please refer to Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Whitewater111 for evidence. Please make sure you make yourself familiar with the guide to responding to cases before editing the evidence page. — HelloAnnyong (say whaaat?!) 02:30, 10 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

Welcome to Wikipedia. Everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia. However, talk pages are meant to be a record of a discussion; deleting or editing legitimate comments, as you did at ANI, is considered bad practice, even if you meant well. Even making spelling and grammatical corrections in others' comments is generally frowned upon, as it tends to irritate the users whose comments you are correcting. Take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. Thank you. Doc talk 08:53, 10 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

You aren't allowed to do that. There was no personal attack; even if there was, you as a participant should not refactor or remove it.

This behavior of yours is not OK. Please don't do it again.

Userboxes

edit

Welcome to Wikipedia! I'm sorry to hear that your initial experiences were frustrating. Perhaps once you've found your feet and know your way about, you will be able to help us improve the new-user experience for others. We do want to do better.

It was suggested elsewhere that you might want to indicate your condition on your user talk page to help other interact with you. I tried to find an example for you of another user that has already done this, but I did not succeed. Instead, what I did find were a couple of userboxes that some Wikipedians choose to place on their user pages: {{User Asperger}} {{User blind}}. It's optional of course, but you seem to be open about your condition, and it might help someone to interact with you more effectively.

If you need future assistance, please don't hesitate to leave me a note on my user page, but a good way to get a fast, low-drama response is to write out your questions here, and add {{helpme}}.

Cheers, Bovlb (talk) 23:14, 10 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

If you would like to write a section on your talk page detailing how Asperger's affects you and suggesting helpful courses of action other editors can take, I'd be happy to lend a hand.     ←   ZScarpia   18:17, 11 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

Internet Radio

edit

Hi, I followed your comment at AN/I and appreciated your explanations. You seem to be stuck on a particular comment about internet radio, and I thought I could suggest a few responses if something like that happens in the future.

  • Refute it. "That's not true."
  • Explain it. "In my experience, an internet radio station takes a lot of effort."
  • Detail it. "For example I have to do this, and do that, and then do this..."
  • Re-question. "I didn't think other people held that opinion. Why do you?"

If it's really bothering you, it might be best to get away from it for a few minutes to make sure you don't respond in an unconstructive way. Maybe you could imagine that another suggestion, which you do find obviously wrong, like "Internet radio is made of spaghetti". Ok, that's NOT true, but someone could say it. So that means people can say things which aren't true, or are only true in their experience. Maybe that's what happened here. It can be frustrating if someone tells you something about your own experience which seems to be denying it, but there are two paths out: a) realize that it's true for you but they might have had a different experience; b) realize they're just wrong.

For a little more background, Wikipedia also has editing policies relating to conflicts of interest, because editing in an area where you have personal experience can lead to many kinds of personal investments or even biases that make encyclopedia writing difficult. For example, I doubt you would have minded greatly if someone had said that "making diet soda is just some labwork and an assembly line", but then, you don't own a soda factory! What I mean is that you have to be careful when editing in areas of your own experience that you're not letting that expertise get in the way. Let me know if you have any other questions, please. Ocaasi (talk) 07:06, 11 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

Ocaasi, my sentiments exactly. Thanks for the words of encouragement. As noted on the main investigation page, I did get hung up on what AussieLegend said and handled it poorly. One of the struggles with Asperger Syndrome is handling social etiquette. We are constantly questioning it ourselves, and find that we can cruise it smooth for a long period, and then suddenly find ones self up against a brick wall. It's like working in something that your comfortable with, then finding yourself up against a job that you have no idea about, and I guess in my case, just totally getting stressed out. As noted, the timing of the events was just really bad. The three articles being proposed for deletion, and the comment in the Sydney discussion was too much, which led to me not knowing what to do. Sorry for the bad analogy, but I guess the best way I can describe this is that your family is sitting at a park having a picnic on a nice day with the kids, then turning around and suddenly finding three armour tanks behind you. Okay, so they haven't fired, but it's an experience that can be rather overwhelming. That's exactly how I felt and I freaked out. Whitewater111 (talk) 09:36, 11 December 2010 (UTC)Reply
Sure, it happens. One thing on Wikipedia is that everything is public, really public. So something as sinister-'seeming' as those three related deletes could have simply been an editor looking in your contribution history and noticing similar articles with a similar (suspected) issue. Finally, for the stuff that really seems like Tanks at a Picnic, maybe it's best to go call someone who has launch codes (i.e. another editor you trust, or an administrator), because hitting the tanks with your wiffle bat can only make them mad. BTW, I like your picnic analogy. Also, minorly, the expression about overreacting is 'a mountain out of a mole hill', although I enjoyed 'mountain out of a mole heal', which also makes sense! Just in case you hadn't heard that before.
Good luck around here. It should be pretty enjoyable, and if it's not, enjoy a walk or something tasty instead, at least until the clouds clear. You can learn a lot from the interactions on Wiki and it could help your skills a lot; but please remember, online communication can be hard for everybody, since there is so little information provided and so much room for misinterpretation. If you're getting frustrated, it's probably not 'all' your fault, and it's ok to acknowledge others mess up too, or some situations might involve misunderstanding. Cheers... Ocaasi (talk) 09:50, 11 December 2010 (UTC)Reply
And totally randomly, I listened to some of your tunes today, from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. Barbara Streisand at 1:00pm on a Saturday... it brought back some 80's memories! Ocaasi (talk) 09:56, 11 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

Removing of ANI discussion

edit

I'm just wondering what the stand is with the dialogue in relation to my recent discussion on the ANI page. As far as I understand, it seems to be resolved, I want to move on and forget about it, yet it still seems to be listed. Just wondering if it could please be removed. Thanks

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Administrators%27_noticeboard/IncidentArchive655#visually_impaired_user_with_Asperger.27s_syndrome_has_sought_assistance_with_ongoing_issue

It's resolved and closed and will likely be archived by the bot sometime today. Gwen Gale (talk) 10:50, 13 December 2010 (UTC)Reply
You are correct that the issue has been resolved. I do not think anyone will delete the discussion, however. It will stay up there for a while and then it will go into the public archives, as a record of the discussion. That's part of what Ocaasi meant by everything on wikipedia being really public. But yes, you should move on and not worry about it--you were very open and straightforward about everything and I do not think anyone will hold any of this against you. I hope you'll stick around and help with the project and not find all of the bruhaha too off putting. --Nuujinn (talk) 10:57, 13 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

Help with Global Warming Article

edit

Thank you for your encouraging words re: the Global Warming article. I have also reported the issue as a Conflict of Interest here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Conflict_of_interest/Noticeboard#Global_Warming If you would like to help, feel free to jump into the conversation with contributions of your own in either forum (and bring your friends :).

Any help with shaming these people into following their own guidelines would be greatly appreciated. Mcoers (talk) 20:02, 27 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

Mcoers, that's fine. I just wanted to voice my support, as wikipedia is supposed to be a neutral encyclopedia. I unfortunately recently had my own run ins with some agenda driven admins, which I won't go into here. I've pretty much removed myself from editing anymore articles, but would like to be here for moral support for some others. I see on the COI face that someone is interested to see some more neutral material on the Global Warming Page, which is good to see. Looks like you'll be able to get that one balanced out a bit. Need help with Deletion review posting

edit

Could someone please assist withk my recent review of a deletion as pointed out in the thread, three new sources have come to light. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Deletion_review/Log/2011_March_3#Mark_Boerebach Thanks Whitewater111 (talk) 07:01, 3 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

You have done the right thing by listing it at Deletion Review, showing your new sources, and declaring your interest. Other users will now give their opinions, and after a week and uninvolved admin will decide. I will temp-undelete the article so that people can look at it during the DRV. JohnCD (talk) 10:14, 3 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
I see that temp-undelete is not necessary because the article was userfied (moved into a user sub-page) to User:Nuujinn/Mark Boerebach. I have made a comment at the DRV that it can be seen there. I will also let Nuujinn know. JohnCD (talk) 10:19, 3 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the help. I feel in light of my involvement, the best I can do is provide the leads and info, and let others make relevant decisions and adjustments as need be. Whitewater111 (talk) 11:06, 3 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
Whitewater111, good to see you're back. The review request looks good, I'll see about getting some time to incorporate the new sources you've suggest into the article. --Nuujinn (talk) 12:13, 3 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Incorrect External Link Notation in Mark Boerebach Article

edit

I just wanted to draw attention to the article which discusses me as the subject. The last link under External Links notes "interview on 2prtv". 2prtv is the name of my youtube channel, and is not where the interview originates from.

It is actually a news item headlined from Australia's National Nine News. I would like to correct it, but feel my involvement in editing may breach conflict of interest issues. I was wondering if I could politely ask someone to please fix this.

It would be much appreciated, and may assist in the current AfD taking place on my article, as the interview may be mistaken by being done by an organisation that is too close to the subject. If it was an interview with 2prtv, this might be the case. As it is done by the Channel Nine Network, which is not related to my radio station, this should shed things in a different light. Thanks Whitewater111 (talk) 09:10, 19 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hi! I will be happy to go remove that particular link from the article and make note of the reason why it was removed in my edit summary. Strikerforce (talk) 09:33, 19 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
Sorry for the misunderstanding, I think rather it being an external link, it can be added to the references, and noted as it coming from National Nine News, from memory, I think it aired on Wednesday 22nd October 2008. Thanks Whitewater111 (talk) 09:46, 19 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
No problem! I don't really see any reason for it to be inserted as a reference anywhere, given that the article appears to be fairly well sourced otherwise. Is there a specific item in the article that the video could serve as a reference for that is not covered by another reference? Also, as a general rule, most YouTube videos do not make good references, so if it isn't vital to the article, I would prefer not to see it used. (You may reply completely in this thread, as I have this page watchlisted.) Strikerforce (talk) 09:51, 19 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
I would agree that the article seems to be well sourced, and also agree with the youtube issue. I'm still somewhat unsure how wikipedia judges the strength of sources. I seem to recall earlier on in the deletion discussion that SBS was a minor television network. As this news article comes from the Channel Nine Network (a major commercial television network in Australia), I just thought it would of assisted in supporting the article. If you feel that it is not required, then I'm alright with that as well, rather more of a suggestion. Thanks Whitewater111 (talk) 10:22, 19 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Update for Mark Boerebach Article; Honolulu film awards

edit

Just wanted to let someone know that there is a knew link for my article. The documentary "Rainman goes to Rockwiz", which is about me (the subject of the article in question) has just won an award at the Honolulu film awards. In the list of 2011 Aloha Accolade Winners, my film has won the short film award. Again, as the article is about me, I'm not sure how to add this, as it will be a conflict of interest. Just wondering if someone can please add the appropriate updates. Please find link below. thanks Whitewater111 (talk) 07:12, 1 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hi Whitewater111, I think the most appropriate request template for your issue is the conflict of interest edit request, {{Request edit}} while it may not get responded too as quickly, you should get someone comfortable handling COI issues. Monty845 07:23, 1 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

I came across the Tripod page, and though interesting, it seemed to of read like an advert in many places, or it just seemed unbalanced. Just wondering if someone could please check if I've done the right thing.

Thanks Whitewater111 (talk) 02:31, 4 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hi there and thanks for your contributions to Wikipedia! There are a couple of comments that I can think of concerning what you added. Firstly, I would wonder whether or not the complaints that you referenced occurred in great enough quantity to make it notable enough to include in the article. All companies face some complaints by customers, but not all of those complaints are frequent enough to really worry about. If that is the case with this company, it should be verified by very good sources. Secondly, phrases like "Users felt that Tripod didn't care" seem more like an opinion rather than a fact. If this is indeed the case, this also should be backed up by excellent sources as these things are sorts of things that are likely to be challenged. I hope that helps! Topher385 (talk) 03:05, 4 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
Thanks Topher, yeah, I might remove that last sentence, I can see the opinion relavence to that. But I do remember a website call 100 best web hosts from many years ago. I've just found it back, I'm just trying to find the tripod section, but they don't seem to have a search feature on here, I have to do some digging. If my editions are not worthy enough for inclusion, maybe they could be summarised down to a sentence, but I thought it is definitely worthy of noting as they were many complaints at the time. We're sort of talking around 2000 - 2001'ish here, and we know how much the web has changed since then. So tracking these old complaints down may be a bit tricky. If in the end, if all else fails, just thought it was worth noting for neutrality. Whitewater111 (talk) 03:15, 4 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

So Fresh and Now Compilations inconsistency of listings?

edit

As a collector of compilations across the world, I often check out the Wikipedia Articles to the UK Now series, German's Bravo Hits, and in Australia, the Now and So Fresh series. I noticed some of the So Fresh Compilations have been deleted.

If I may politely point out two things - the inconsistancy in which some compilations series are listed. The Entire Now series from the UK has every CD in the set listed, yet they are many holes in the Australia So Fresh collection - This is just the Australian equivalent to the Now Series.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/So_Fresh:_The_Hits_of_Autumn_2011

In relation to a Deletion review, I thought the following two points could be considered. Apparently one of the reasons why the page was deleted was because the compilation did not have a listing on allmusic.

http://www.allmusic.com/album/so-fresh-the-hits-of-autumn-2011-mw0002127903

http://www.aria.com.au/pages/aria-charts-end-of-year-charts-compilations-2011.htm

If the deletion still stands, that's fine, but if a consensus could be reached on this issue, I could fill in the compilations. I would like to just get this sorted out first, rather then wasting time filling in pages that would get deleted anyway. When speaking of notability, a:) So fresh is one of the longest running compilation series in Australia, and with this particular volume, it is the sixth most selling compilation of 2011. If I could please get a heads up on this, this would be much appreciated. Thanks Whitewater111 (talk) 00:03, 26 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

The {{helpme}} template isn't going to help with forming consensus. You can use the talk page of the article to help with that instead. I dream of horses If you reply here, please leave me a {{Talkback}} message on my talk page. @ 00:29, 26 October 2013 (UTC)Reply
