Is it your account there? If it's someone else's account, you can't take it over (although it may be possible to Usurp it, as it's never been used since it was created in October 2007). If it is your account, you need to log into the account (using whichever password you used when you created it, as it's different from the enwiki password). If you can't remember the password, go to the zh wiki, go to the log in screen, enter your user name, and click on "send me a password". Background of Help Menu Administrators

edit

This is not a complaint, because I am sure you know what you are doing a lot better than I know what I'm doing <smile>. It is just a friendly request for clarification, because I am interested in better understanding how Wikipedia works.

You posted a "Resolved" logo on a section of a[1] where I inquired about the above topic. However, I did not receive an answer to my question, after clarifying it. Therefore, I am confused as to why you declared it "resolved." For me, it has not been resolved. But perhaps you declared it resolved because there is no way I can actually get an answer. If you tell me there is no answer to my question, that would indeed resolve it for me <smile>.

Furthermore, I am wondering if the section I created in this "New contributors' help page" will remain on Wikipedia permanently or be deleted because at a certain point, the contributors who are now new will no longer be new. I am guessing Wikipedia is likely to keep the information but archive it. Just my guess. Am I right?

Thank you, Wifione, for your kind attention. // And Nothing But (talk) 06:07, 9 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hi :) I'm sorry that I placed the resolved notice. I noticed that you had thanked the contributors for their answers. Therefore, I placed the resolved notice as that helps helpdesk members skip through some help requests. Which part of the query was still unanswered? Ask here, or at the help desk (as a new query; you're right, your old query would vanish in a few days). If you wish to have the professional background of contributors (even I am many a time amazed at the extent of free work voluntary workers can do, without pay, without perks), you could email them privately to enquire. Given that you are IT savvy, you'll find the link to email on any user's home page (provided the user has enabled the email function in his/her profile). You could also leave a very nicely worded diplomatic message asking their background, giving well explained reasons so as not to offend them. Some might, some might not (they might find it weird). It's all right. Remember, generally, talk pages are not supposed to be used for general chit chat (like what is going on between us right now; lol) but only for specific project oriented discussions. Therefore, your queries might create a hassle on that front. Feel free to write back here, or at the help desk for any additional help. Do please enjoy your stay in Wikipedia. It's supposed to be so :) Tc and best. ▒ ♪ ♫ Wifione ♫ ♪ ▒ ―Œ ♣Łeave Ξ мessage♣ 16:18, 9 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
I'm swamped; therefore, quick message. Thank you very much. Your response was excellent, and you deserve an award for it, but I don't know how to give you one. You say, talk pages not for chit-chat, but "write back here," yet this is a talk page, so I'm confused. Not sure whether I am allowed or not allowed to do what I am doing right now. Experimental neurosis is setting in <smile>. I was not tech-savvy enough to find your own email link, if you have one. If I want to save my[2], do I have to copy it to my own hard drive, or will it be put somewhere on Wikipedia where I can retrieve it later? I do not like to write things, then have them disappear. It's a disincentive to contribute. (I save everything!) More, later. Maybe I need a mentor: not sure. Thanks, again. //And Nothing But (talk) 10:59, 10 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
Valid questions I guess. I'll take them point by point.
  • Awards: There are Barn Stars Wikipedians give to each other. You don't need to have any particular background to give one; though it is civil to not take one unless awarded :)
  • Talk pages are not for chit-chat but you can write back here for any queries on the project.
  • The email link is generally on the left hand side table of the page (the third link from bottom). You can always use the code http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:EmailUser/Wifione to email me. Replace my name with any user's you might wish to email. However, in my case, I prefer the talk page discussions rather than email (no offence meant; it's a preference I hold while communicating with anybody).
  • Whenever you might wish to save a page, there's a diff method to do it so you can save the links properly. Using diffs, you get a perma-link to your version of the page. You could also go to the History link of the Help Page (or any page for that matter) and save any of the past versions of the page that contains your changes. For example, http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:New_contributors'_help_page&oldid=348997206 is one possible perma-link to a version you might wish to save.

Hope that answers your questions. Like I mentioned before, feel free to ask me or any help desk member for help whenever. Kind regards. ▒ ♪ ♫ Wifione ♫ ♪ ▒ ―Œ ♣Łeave Ξ мessage♣ 16:29, 10 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Account Creation Tool Access

Hi. I had last year requested an access to the account creation tool. Administrator Prodego had left a message that I needed to gain more experience. This year, although I've been trying to leave a new request through my old id on the ACC interface, I seem to have forgotten my password. Reply to your question at my talk page: I don't think there are any admins who check WP:UAA who would block this username as promotional given the edits you've pointed out (which don't suggest any connection to any Canadian organization). Sorry I was unable to respond to your message or the AN/I. I declined the UAA because I didn't see a connection between the name and Richard Jay. Thanks for the reply. You'll have to help me out here so I don't make future reports in UAA in such cases. I'm confused. Ah, so this is where the problem comes in. I tend to see corporate names like that as not necessarily indicative of role-account use, since it could easily be a sole proprietorship with exactly one employee (however, something like "Consolidated Amalgamated Marketing Department" is more clearly indicative of a role account and thus blockable). We have more of these types of names of late since younger YouTube users have adopted such usernames for themselves there to sound more impressive and then try to use them here.

And really, I think there's nothing inherently wrong with a corporate-sounding username that does not correspond to a known actual business entity and does not make any edits concerning one with a similar name. Daniel Case (talk) 14:29, 23 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
