Orphaned non-free image File:Era logo.png

Thanks for uploading File:Era logo.png. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

PLEASE NOTE:

Re: WikiFFyta

Hello Wikiacc! I'm afraid I have little information regarding whoever is operating behind this. There is a discussion regarding this going on at the Wikipedia review. Also found a Facebook group with the same name, though I'm unsure if it is related.--thunderboltz(TALK) 17:03, 29 March 2010 (UTC)

rodovid and werelate

Hi Wikiacc,

Thank you for the reply. I will try to get back to this in the coming week. I know WR uses a different tree format, but it's the same sort of data... and they have much more of it than Rodovid does and the backing of a major genealogy library, so it's worth making an effort to find a solution that would work for all free-genealogy supporters.

Hello again. We're revisiting new project ideas on Meta, and Rodovid + WeRelate are at the top of the list of supported ideas. If you are around, please drop a quick line there. – SJ + 18:28, 24 November 2012 (UTC)

MSU Interview

Dear Wikiacc,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the communityHERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

 • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
 • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
 • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
 • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
 • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at obar@msu.edu (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your nameHERE instead.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at obar@msu.edu. I will be more than happy to speak with you.

Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Obar --Jaobar — Preceding unsigned comment added by 35.9.115.210 (talk) 21:50, 2 March 2012 (UTC)

Your contributed article, Culture of Somaliland

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

Hello, I noticed that you recently created a new page, Culture of Somaliland. First, thank you for your contribution; Wikipedia relies solely on the efforts of volunteers such as you. Unfortunately, the page you created covers a topic on which we already have a page – :Culture of Somalia. Because of the duplication, your article has been tagged for speedy deletion. Please note that this is not a comment on you personally and we hope you will continue helping to improve Wikipedia. If the topic of the article you created is one that interests you, then perhaps you would like to help out at :Culture of Somalia – you might like to discuss new information at the article's talk page. If you think the article you created should remain separate, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. Additionally if you would like to have someone review articles you create before they go live so they are not nominated for deletion shortly after you post them, allow me to suggest the article creation process and using our search feature to find related information we already have in the encyclopedia. Try not to be discouraged. Wikipedia looks forward to your future contributions. Atlantic306 (talk) 04:48, 13 July 2016 (UTC)

I'm not going to take a position right now on whether Culture of Somaliland should have its own article. However, a closer look at the history makes it clear that WP:A10 does not apply here. I created the page in 2005 (not recently) and its first version as an article was written in 2006. Furthermore, the article is a plausible redirect to Culture of Somalia, like my first version was. Please use the talk page or a forum like WP:AFD to discuss this article, rather than CSD. Wikiacc () 06:50, 13 July 2016 (UTC)
Thanks for your message. Think the redirect was the best option but was a bit concerned that the redirect was being reverted so I thought putting it through A10 would decide it. Thanks Atlantic306 (talk) 16:35, 13 July 2016 (UTC)

Styrofoam

Styrofoam” is a brand name; the article is about that brand. The brand is not “Styrofoam insulation”. There are more than 250 incoming links to the name and it should not have been moved without discussion. When you feel there is reason enough to move an article like that, go through a requested move discussion first. It’s been moved back now, and the dab page is at Styrofoam (disambiguation). — Gorthian (talk) 20:54, 10 August 2018 (UTC)

Poke and sashimi

It's been a very longtime since I had any of this influence but when I was growing up my dad made a mix of Japanese and Hawaiian dishes but he would not generally eat raw fish. I remember now what he was trying to tell me, years ago, about the differences between Hawaiian raw fish and Japanese raw fish but it wasn't until I saw this in a source from our article that I got it. It's more than the ingredients but the preparation of the fish itself and the way it is diced. Hawaiian "style" poke is prepared differently than Japanese sashimi. Dad was part Japanese and I was actually born in Japan then moved to Hawaii but I was never fond of either Hawaiian or Japanese food growing up. My brother liked poi and I was the only kid that could use chopsticks but I copied my dad eating rice when I was a toddler. I have a much better appreciation for both cultural foods but I won't eat raw fish either.--Mark Miller (talk) 06:57, 1 September 2018 (UTC)

Very interesting! Thanks for sharing, Mark Miller. Wikiacc () 11:46, 6 September 2018 (UTC)

File PROD

Thanks for nominating numerous files for discussion. Are you aware that WP:PROD has been extended to files? In 2017, the consensus agreed to extend PROD to files. If you have enabled Twinkle, you can go to a file page, hover around "Twinkle" menu, and select "PROD". Alternatively, you can manually use . -- George Ho (talk) 04:50, 20 May 2019 (UTC)

Thanks George Ho; I was aware. I prefer to use FFD for licensing-related questions (the vast majority of my recent nominations), though I'll do better in the future about using PROD when applicable for images that are bad for some other reason. Wikiacc () 11:50, 20 May 2019 (UTC)

Replacing File:GoGos-WeGotTheBeat.jpg

Hello. You closed the discussion about File:GoGos-WeGotTheBeat.jpg in 2016 as "kept" in one article. This year, I intend to replace it with another image from the US release without needing to re-take the other to FFD. Is that okay? --George Ho (talk) 09:09, 15 September 2019 (UTC)

@George Ho: I think you'd need to tag the old file with di-orphaned fair use, but otherwise it seems okay. Wikiacc () 17:51, 17 September 2019 (UTC)

Precious

African art gnome

Thank you for beginning quality articles such as Outer Banks and European Research Area, for lists such as 1995 Pulitzer Prize, for cleaning up African art and African languages, for service from 2005, including gnomish cut&paste merges and church categories sorting, - you are an awesome Wikipedian!

You are recipient no. 2381 of Precious, a prize of QAI. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:44, 15 April 2020 (UTC)

Thanks, Gerda Arendt! I should note that Outer Banks was a copyvio cleanup from the days before revdel (so I didn't actually begin it) and I haven't touched African art in over 15 years (!). With those disclaimers, I appreciate the recognition. Wikiacc () 21:06, 15 April 2020 (UTC)

Please take a look at this blocked editor's (Aristiderazu's) talk page access

This editor was blocked by admin JBW in March 2018. They just posted 1,415,712kb on their talk page - looks like they're using their talk page to host content... Shearonink (talk) 21:56, 28 June 2020 (UTC)

Nevermind, that user's been blocked from talk page access by another admin. Sorry about the notifications to more than one admin's user talk - I didn't know where to report it and posted to admins who had edited that user's talk page. Thanks anyway, Shearonink (talk) 00:45, 29 June 2020 (UTC)

Flagged images - found probable source, but not sure where reference is needed on the file page

@Wikiacc: Hi came across the warnings for the Lake Bardwell and the deadline is July 4 and decided to investigate. The instructions on where and how to add the requested source really should be linked from the template, I didn't figure out the source should be placed since a source is not a summary nor license. These are my first photo verification attempts so I'd welcome an assist in making sure the references are added where they need to be. [Line 2 of page policy] states the info from the site is public information, but should use byline/photo/image credits. I've found all the images flagged for the article within the US Army Corps of Engineers Website.

Thanks Wolfgang8741 says: If not you, then who? (talk) 12:17, 2 July 2020 (UTC)

Hi Wolfgang8741. The short answer is that the source link should go in the summary section. If the description page has an Information template the link would go in the "Source" part.
A tip you might find useful: use the colon trick to link to files. (:File:MottPark Camping.jpg produces File:MottPark Camping.jpg).
I'll go ahead and add these sources to the description pages now. Thanks for going and finding these. Hunting for image sources is valuable work! Wikiacc () 12:36, 2 July 2020 (UTC)

Binary response model with continuous endogenous explanatory variables

You've tagged Binary response model with continuous endogenous explanatory variables without starting a discussion; the reason is quite obvious, but the intended destination isn't. It is linked from Instrumental variables estimation, but only in the 'see also' section of that page. There was a related page (Probit model for panel data with heterogeneity and endogenous explanatory variables), but that no longer exists; the page creator account is long-blocked. Can you suggest a target, or might proposed deletion be more appropriate? Klbrain (talk) 16:07, 19 July 2020 (UTC)

I tagged this as part of a sweep of the contributor’s articles. The best target is instrumental variables estimation given what happened with the similar article on endogeneity in Poisson regression. At the time I tagged I wasn’t sure if that or probit model would be best.

I’m not opposed to proposed deletion, given the narrow scope and poor quality of the article. But I’ve been challenged before when I’ve tagged this contributor’s articles on similar grounds. Wikiacc () 17:04, 19 July 2020 (UTC)

Thanks for the response; all very reasonable. I had closed a merge proposal to Probit model back in January 2020, given that the merge proposal was from 2017 and I could find no case or support, and the case wasn't clear to me. Nevertheless, it might be worth doing with the other target (Instrumental variables estimation); I'll have another look and might just do it; or tag with the new target. Klbrain (talk) 21:26, 19 July 2020 (UTC)

Sorry

Someone else was using my account when those edits were made. Kanto7 (talk) 23:20, 24 July 2020 (UTC)

@Kanto7: I recommend checking your contributions to make sure that person's edits don't remain in any of the articles. In the future, make sure to keep your account secure. Ultimately, you're responsible for the edits made under your name. Wikiacc () 23:26, 24 July 2020 (UTC)

you sent me a message saying my edits of a live person had been removed. I found a page on myself accidentally and tried to correct and expand it a bit. Why would I need to provide references?

Does a person trying to correct their own page created by someone else need a reference?BLK215 (talk) 16:25, 12 August 2020 (UTC)

@BLK215: Welcome to Wikipedia! The answer to your question is "yes", and the reason is that it's not enough for statements on Wikipedia to be true, they must also be verifiable. For more information, see our guide for people who have articles about them. Let me know if you have any questions. Wikiacc () 03:47, 13 August 2020 (UTC)

File copyright/Files listed for discussion

Hello Wikiacc,

I've noticed you've listed some of my files for discussion... Is there a problem with them? I believe they were all uploaded justly and fairly. They are all for demonstrations purposes only and help the article immensely. They have been shared around the public domain many times, and do not seems to have a single original owner. I have done nothing wrong. If you want to have a "discussion" about those images, then let's have it here...:)

Thanks, Davism0703 (talk) 02:26, 16 August 2020 (UTC)

@Davism0703: your input is welcome, but please put it in the relevant section at Wikipedia:Files for discussion/2020 August 16, so that everyone can participate, rather than having a private conversation here on my talk page. Wikiacc () 02:28, 16 August 2020 (UTC)
Alright, the discussion has now officially started at Wikipedia:Files for discussion/2020 August 16. Thanks, Davism0703 (talk) 02:48, 16 August 2020 (UTC)

Mexican Repatriation

I don't have any objections to your edit. I was mainly bored and trying to type the least amount of words possible. But I'm not exactly sure how you consider that particular article to be neutral POV. The term "ethnic cleansing" seems a bit extreme. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.87.224.29 (talk) 11:14, 16 September 2020 (UTC)

@76.87.224.29: thanks for your comment. This has come up before (see Talk:Mexican Repatriation); at present it does have citations and is clear about attributing the phrase to scholars, but I agree the wording could use work. Feel free to open a new discussion at the talk page to hash out better wording. Wikiacc () 00:25, 17 September 2020 (UTC)

Please help logos deleted

Hi I appreciated you helping me through the process of correcting the image https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:AMAA_Who%E2%80%99s_who_in_martial_arts_award_plaque,_2018.jpg but now I have a problem with a whole bunch of logos I uploaded but were speedy deleted, I have requested undelete with Media data and Non-free use rationale but nobody even on the chat channel can tell me if I need a release from the copyright holder or not. I noticed the image https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:JeetKuneDo.svg which is like the logos I uploaded and wondered what is going on with it and should I do the same this to approve. Unlike like Wikipedia I can't manage to get any help on commons, cheers Australianblackbelt (talk) 07:24, 10 January 2021 (UTC)

Hi Australianblackbelt, I took a look at the request you made at Commons. The problem is that Commons doesn't allow non-free use, so you have to move the logos to English Wikipedia. This process is pretty simple, but you have to ask for it explicitly; see c:Commons:Undeletion requests#To allow transfer of fair use content to another project. Once the transfer is approved, you need to move quickly to transfer the images and get the rationales added. (You might find Template:Non-free use rationale logo helpful.)
File:JeetKuneDo.svg was kept because it's too simple for copyright. Commons can be stubborn sometimes, so even if you think an image is too simple for copyright, it can be hard to convince others. In the case of JeetKuneDo.svg, they could point to a letter from the US Copyright Office stating that the logo is too simple. For your images (assuming you don't have such a letter) it'll be harder. Wikiacc () 02:24, 13 January 2021 (UTC)

I understand now that I uploaded the logos on commons instead of Wikipedia Australianblackbelt (talk) 03:45, 13 January 2021 (UTC)

Underlinked tag

Could you please explain why you are reinserting the underlinked tag into stub articles that already have sufficient Wikilinks? Is this some bot at work? All of a sudden, we have hundreds of articles in which the underlinked tag has been added. It is creating unnecessary work for those of us trying to reduce the backlog of truly underlinked articles. Thank you. Rogermx (talk) 14:53, 20 January 2021 (UTC)

Hi Rogermx, it looks like you've seen my comment at User talk:!matt5454!matt; that's the reason. Before starting, I checked a number of !matt5454!matt's recent edits, and found none where the removal was justified. I therefore did a mass revert. (On further examination it looks like many of !matt5454!matt's older edits were justified, and I've since reverted myself there.) It's not a bot, though you could call it bot-like editing. It might assuage some of your concerns to know that I don't intend to revert !matt5454!matt's edits going forward (the blocking process is more appropriate). Wikiacc () 01:55, 21 January 2021 (UTC)
Also, I am sure there are still articles where !matt5454!matt was justified, my revert was incorrect, and I haven't yet reverted myself. Wikiacc () 01:58, 21 January 2021 (UTC)
Hi Wikiacc, I apologize for the tone of my remarks, I overreacted. I assumed it was a bot because I have seen many stubs labeled underlinked by editors using bots. I appreciate your response and have a better understanding of what you were doing and why you were doing it. Wikipedia is an important pastime for me and I can get single-minded about it. Have a good day! Rogermx (talk) 02:20, 21 January 2021 (UTC)
@Rogermx: And I appreciate the work you and others are doing on the backlog of underlinked articles. I hope you also have a good day! Wikiacc () 03:38, 21 January 2021 (UTC)

Karl Brooks Heisey photo public domain

If a photo is public domain in the place where it was taken in Canada in 1920 100 years ago of a Canadian subject who died in 1937 80 years ago why would American copyright law have any application to this photo why is fair use required it boggles the mind. I noted the American flag next to the comment. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Unionville (talkcontribs) 12:02, 28 January 2021 (UTC)

Hi Unionville, please don't forget to sign your talk page posts with four tildes, and follow the directions at WP:TPNEW for starting a discussion.
I assume you are referring to File:RFC Second Lieutenant Karl Brooks Heisey 1920.jpg. Wikipedia follows the copyright laws of the United States because Wikipedia is based in the United States. See WP:Non-US copyrights for more information. Fair use is only required if the image is not public domain in the US. Wikiacc () 01:09, 29 January 2021 (UTC)

Question

Hello,

I am not sure to understand yourreasoning behind the deletion of image here. Would you mind elaborating (because it doesn't appear logical). Thank you. 172.58.236.25 (talk)

@172.58.236.25: the relevant reference is the guideline on non-US copyrights, particularly the section entitled "Restored copyrights"; basically, Wikipedia follows US copyright law, not Danish copyright law. If you'd like to contest the deletion please discuss with the closing admin (Jo-Jo Eumerus) or use WP:REFUND. Wikiacc () 00:04, 17 August 2021 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Category:Iran public domain images

A tag has been placed on Category:Iran public domain images indicating that it is currently empty, and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion. If it remains empty for seven days or more, it may be deleted under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself. Liz Read!
