Thank you for voting

edit

File:In-the-dark.jpg

Thank you for voting in my RfA which at 51/20/6 unfortunately did not achieve consensus. In closing the nomination, Essjay remarked that it was one of the better discussed RfAs seen recently and I would like to thank you and all others who chose to vote for making it as such. It was extremely humbling to see the large number of support votes, and the number of oppose votes and comments will help me to become stronger. I hope to run again for adminship soon. Thank you all once more. Wikiwoohoo 20:22, 11 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Brand

edit

The discription of the parsonage in Ibsen's Brand, translated by Eli Sonja Vasset:

And here it stands without a fear
Because the glacier passes here
Just when the time of leave sprouts comes
Above the heads like boulder storms
The parsonage protected stands, like in a cascade cave.

--Frode Inge Helland 09:33, 13 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

In the Norweigan edition in the beginning of part 3. Brand expresses his dislike of his parsonage and Agnes replies:

Her ligger det dess mere trygt.
Så ytterlig har breen bygt,
at når ved løvspretts-tid den går,
den skrider utenover oss,
og prestehuset urørt står,
som inne i en hulfalls-foss

I appreciate your spending the effort to look into my editing in as much detail as you obviously did in order to emerge with words of support in my RfA. I'm glad that you affirmed Radiant's nomination and I'll be measured in my use of the cleaning closet's contents. I am curious though ... I hadn't realized any of the disputes I've been involved in were "rather famous"; which one were you thinking about? User:Ceyockey (talk to me) 00:41, 15 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

My RfA

edit

Williamborg/archive4, thank you for your support in my RfA which passed on 13th December 2006 with a tally of 49/10/5. I am delighted by the result and a little daunted by the scope of additional responsibilities; I shall be cautious in my use of the new tools. I am well aware that becoming an Admin is not just about a successful nomination, but a continuing process of gaining further experience; for this I shall welcome your feedback. Again, many thanks for supporting my RfA, feel free to contact me if you need any assistance; but lacking superhero powers, I can't magically treat you by the power of the internet, despite your kind faith in my clinical prowess :-) David Ruben 03:24, 16 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hello my fellow WikiProject Lakes colleague! I would like to ask you if you can translate a tiny stub from NO wiki, no:Briksdalsbreen ? It would be very much appreciated. Thank you. - Darwinek 11:04, 7 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thank you very much for the translation. I have been there in 2000, beautiful place. I plan to start stub about Dalsnibba mountain in future, currently there is only DE wiki article about it. I have been there in 2000, also. It is a very popular tourist spot located near the magnificient Geirangerfjord. Take care. - Darwinek 20:34, 7 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Arnfinn Kjelland

edit

Hi there, I have added a "prod" template to the stub Arnfinn Kjelland, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. If you still believe that the author can assert some notability I suggest that you move this article to the Norwegian Wikipedia, he does not have an entry there. Cheers, ArchStanton 16:54, 11 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hi again and thanks for your patronising words and welcome message on my talk page (yes, I have read the introduction already). Seems like I have encountered the unwritten rule that a newbie questioning the work of senior editors will face heavy scrutinisation of their own contributions.
Williamborg response: Guilty as charged on the patronizing words— and acknowledge that even a new editor can make valid comments. As to an unwritten rule—I suspect this is just human nature to respond to a relative new editor who challenges ones work.
On my proposal to delete the article on Arnfinn Kjelland: If you disagree with the nomination you can simply remove the tag and explain why in the edit summary.
Williamborg response: Yes, I know. But I do not remove prods on my own work—I'm hardly dispassionate, as you noted, and may not be the best judge. Will let the closing Admin decide merit.
On your comments about my other edits: Writing new articles is of course important, ensuring that the articles in Wikipedia are of a certain quality is of equal importance. I have reviewed quite a few of the articles on Norwegians, and discovered that many articles, especially on academics and writers, are obviously written by themselves, publishers or business associates to improve their ghits. My so-called ‘campaign’ was that I nominated 4-5 of the ones I thought were obvious for deletion, and warned the authors (if not anonymous). Most of them are now deleted, those contested (I admit that I can be wrong!) can stay – no problem.
Williamborg response: Okay, "campaign" was harsh. I do agree that your work is actually extremely good and that your heart was in the improvement of the Wikipedia.
I will take your advice and do my best to increase the number of articles on notable Norwegian people (especially these, and people/bands in the area of what you referred to as ‘pop culture’). There are some other articles that I would like to see deleted too, but that can wait.
Williamborg response: This is exceptionally good news! Some fraction of new editors are drawn to administrative actions. Soon enough they become administrators with the powers to delete/undelete/block/unblock who render final the judgments on others work; they tend to make better admins when they've done serious contributing/editing before moving ot admin functions. So I have long preferred to see new editors contribute for a while before they go to the admin functions.
Williamborg response: And I do like your intent to contribute to Norwegian writers; there are many holes.
Williamborg response: As to pop culture, I do feel there is already too low a standard, allowing inclusion of Fancruft on Wikipedia, but Wikipedia is a relational database & can accommodate lots of this evanescent material. And I could well be wrong on the enduring value of what I see as Fancruft, so will respect your (and many, many others) contributions.

Until then, cheers ArchStanton 19:08, 13 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Helping out with the Unassessed Wikipedia Biographies

Seeing that you are an active member of the WikiBiography Project, I was wondering if you would help lend a hand in helping us clear out the amount of [unassessed articles] tagged with {{WPBiography}}. Many of them are of stub and start class, but a few are of B or A caliber. Getting a simple assessment rating can help us start moving many of these biographies to a higher quality article. New article Corfu slide

edit

Hello, I have started a new article that ties in with your work on the Missoula Floods. Just a start as I need to get to the library for some more research, not much I can find on the web. I live in Othello so I will try to get a picture of the slide later this week and add that to the article. I wonder if you might want to add this new page to the boxes you have put at the bottom of several related articles and on your user page, or can I go ahead and do that myself? Also, are there any other articles/pictures you would like to see on the area that I could help with? Thnx --killing sparrows 03:56, 27 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your reply. I didn't know how to edit the box but I see that by going to the page Template:Ice Age Floods I can add the page there as you have done. I hope to add some other articles on this topic and I will put them in the template as I do that. I travel alot, heading for St Paul Island, Alaska soon but Othello is my home base so if you ever head out this way let me know!==killing sparrows 17:49, 27 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Corfu slide

edit

Hi there! I like the stuff you've added to the article, I haven't been able to get a picture yet but hope to soon. Just as a matter of interest, there is rumored to be a large chunk of ice from the Missoula flood buried under the slide. Early settlers in the region excavated a tunnel into it and used it for food storage at one time. It probably was known to the Indian tribes of the area though I haven't been able to find any documentation of that or the pioneer use, it's all been word of mouth. The entrance was knocked in several years ago when it had become a popular place for kids to go and drink beer and party in the summer (me included!)but you can still stand next to the caved in tunnel and feel the very cold air flowing out. Like I say, all word of mouth but I have talked to several old-timers who have heard of it. Is it truly possible the ice could have lasted this long? --killing sparrows 03:58, 12 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Your pictures

edit

Hi Bill, What an amazing coincidence! A friend and I drove from Othello to Seattle last Thursday (the 12th) and I wanted to get some pictures of the slide as we drove right past it. Unfortunately his car was not able to travel the roads to the top so I didn't take any. Imagine my surprise when i returned and found your pictures on the article! The 'gods' must have wanted those pictures! Great job!

I will try to talk to some 'oldtimers' from the area bout the 'ice cave,' my mother is part of the local historical society and they may have some info also. I could actually drive to the spot, its along the old Crab Creek road at the base of the Saddle Mts. Wish me luck.

Ice cave update

edit

Hi there, Well, sad to say the ice cave was not any remnant of the floods. It was dug by early settlers who would cut and haul ice from the Columbia river during the winter and then have 'cold storage' during the summer months. I talked to a gentleman who went with his father to do this very thing in the late 1930's. It was used until the 1950's and then with the availability of refrigeration, largely abandoned. The entrance started falling in sometime in the early 1960's and was then further purposely collapsed to prevent anyone getting in there and possibly being trapped. Too bad, it would have been a great find.--killing sparrows (chirp!) 00:59, 30 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Slash-and-burn vs. Slash-and-char

edit

I noticed your interest in Slash-and-burn on the Talk page for Shifting cultivation. Under Topic 7, Comparison with other ecological phenomena, I added an admittedly awkwardly worded Topic 8:

Alternative practice in the Pre-Columbian Amazon basin

Slash-and-char, as opposed to slash-and-burn, may create self-perpetuating soil fertility that supports sedentary agriculture, but the society so sustained may still be overturned, as above. See article at Terra preta.

There is no stand-alone article on Slash and char. Pawyilee 11:30, 5 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Another editor has added the "{{prod}}" template to the article Sigmund Borgundvaag, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but the editor doesn't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and has explained why in the article (see also Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not and Wikipedia:Notability). Please either work to improve the article if the topic is worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia or discuss the relevant issues at its talk page. Vardøhus Fortress

edit

Hi there. I've just converted the bracketed source information you added to Vardøhus Fortress into proper footnotes. One problem, though: You never stated from which pages of the books you were citing. To just say, for example, "Stagg" isn't quite enough. We also need the relevant page numbers. If you would be so kind as to provide those that would be great. Hope to hear back from you soon on my talk page. Manxruler (talk) 09:27, 26 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for adding page numbers to your citations. I have changed the format so that the page numbers can be seen. You're right. That book citation format does not support page numbers, that's why I never use it. It's good now, anyway. You forgot one page number though, the one about the destruction Vardø suffered during WWII. If it's all the same to you I'll be happy to dig up a source for that one myself. Thanks again for those page numbers. Manxruler (talk) 23:24, 9 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

I've marked your Austrått nomination as verified for DYK. Thanks for adding the extra inline citation. Using Wikipedia as a reference of Wikipedia.

edit

Hi there, Williamborg. Thanks for your great work in translating articles from Scandinavian languages to English. It's a very valuable effort you are making in that department. One problem, though; you seem to continuously cite Wikipedia as a source for your edits. For example that was the case with Jan Bull, Terje Stigen and Peter R. Holm until I came across them today. Please see Wikipedia:Verifiability and cease using Wikipedia as a source on Wikipedia. Manxruler (talk) 19:13, 18 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, Bill. I appreciate your nice words. I've looked around and it seems that when you translate articles from one language to another, then one good way of showing that is to tag the new article page with Template:Translation/Ref. Manxruler (talk) 06:06, 19 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Tip: Using templates to cite sources.

edit

Hi Bill. When you cite your sources it would be really great if you could use Citation templates for those of your sources that are url-based. Like over at Jan Jakob Tønseth Template:Cite web would have been the right one to use. If you could start using these templates that would be really great and would also help counter link rot. Cheers. Manxruler (talk) 13:32, 21 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

It seems that you have translated this more or less word by word from Norsk biografisk leksikon. I don't think NBL is freely licensed. Even if it is, direct translation should be avoided, as the NBL articles are not necessarily well structured. We at WP should have our own style, not carbon-copy other encyclopedias. Also, the formatting of the NBL reference was a pain to look at. Next time you use an NBL reference, just copy it from another article and change the fields. Punkmorten (talk) 19:16, 11 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Sorry I didn't spot this note until now. Multiple edits to the talk page in close order - the earlier one went unnoticed.
You are correct - parts of the article were translated fairly closely from that Norsk biografisk leksikon, as it was the best available source (and the only one which covered several portions of his career). At the time I gave it limited consideration since I've translated a number of Norwegian Wikipedia articles and have fallen into the translation pattern without thinking too closely about it; I use it to work on my Norwegian.
Your comment is directed at a fundamental issue - copyright violation
Does a fairly literal translation of an article comprise copyright infringement? There a problem may exist (although I would discuss discuss with an attorney to get a professional opinion before I'd express a stronger opinion myself). However, to quote a ComiPress article titled Online Translation - Dealing with Copyright and Plagiarism Issues Part II - A Legal View: "the first problem is whether the act of `translating into English an article of which Person B in Japan is the copyright holder under American national la` violated the translation rights (see copyright law article 27) or not." "As the article in question (that of Person B in Japan) is protected by American copyright law, Person A (who resides in America, one of the concluding parties of the Berne Convention) will run afoul of violation of translation or adaptation..." So your concern is valid, as I am an American citizen one can make a case that I unintentionally violated American copyright law. Hence I will take corrective action:
  • With the exception of articles that are freely licensed (examples include Wikipedia articles and [articles in nbl like http://www.snl.no/Jens_Bjelke Jens Bjelke]) in the future I'll paraphrase more extensively and use the original material selectively.
  • And I'll review recent articles which referenced nbl to assure I reword them appropriately and use other references like dbl instead of nbl (dbl often has essentially the same material and is clearly out of copy protection).
I'll ponder your style comments as well - although as an engineer, I suspect there are subtleties that are lost on me there.
As always, I appreciate your counsel, consider it carefully, and try to adjust. Thanks!

Citations

edit

Hi! Another thing. Having six citations in one sentence, like this: "During King Christian's tour of Norway in 1596, this and other abuses were reported to the king, who dismissed Munk from office, banished him to his estates in Jutland and forced him to pay a heavy fine.[1][3][4][5][6]" is not appropriate (maybe except for very controversial statements). The point of citing sources is to show which sources you really used, not to pile on every source that mentions the subject... Punkmorten (talk) 19:22, 11 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Ludvig Munk

edit

Hi there,

I've just tagged Ludvig Munk (which you created on 11 April) as requiring an improvement to the references; the box displayed by {{refimprove}} may be misleading on this article, so let me clarify;

The references are in several different formats; some have the ISBN linked, some don't; some have bits of notes, things like that.

This makes it hard to verify the info.

It would be better to use consistent {{citation}}: Empty citation (help) tags, and to use footnotes where appropriate.

For a bit of help on referencing, see User:Chzz/refs.

I hope this helps, if you need help with it, either leave me a note or talk to us live.

Cheers,  Chzz  ►  06:26, 14 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Height of Palouse Falls

edit

Thanks for the welcome! How high is Palouse Falls? You seem to have a reliable source estimating it at 198 ft, but the Kayaking world believes it is 186 ft. Where did you get the height estimate of the falls? Thanks, Seek writ awe there (talk) 21:23, 15 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Excellent question. Response on talk page for Palouse Falls. Skaal - Williamborg (Bill) 02:23, 16 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

You like to translate?

edit

I found a quite well-cited article in the Norwegian Wikipedia, which we have no equivalent of. http://no.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%85lesundraset. An English name suggestion would be 2008 Ålesund landslide. Punkmorten (talk) 16:18, 22 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

You’re correct, I do sometimes translate articles. I’ve done mostly Norwegian articles, last week a Russian article, a while back several German articles, and back several years a series of Spanish articles. They include a rather variegated collection of topics, the common denominator is that the topics happened to capture my interest at the time. When selecting articles:
  • I’m an engineer – my work is about being highly systematic & structured - Wikipedia is recreation so I keep Wikipedia activities unstructured. I wander about until I find a topic that interests me. If it interests me enough & there is no article, I compose a new article or translate an existing article.
  • I also occasionally try to “save” machine-translated articles or other poorly written articles that are AFD’d when I feel they warrant retention. Recent examples include Алексей Владимирович Высоцкий which was AFD’d and Ivar Matlaus which is still AFD’d.
I do have some interest in Ålesund—mostly historical since one branch of my family came from there in 1857—so I’ll check to see if this article captures my fancy after I finish my current interests.

Good catch. That was an early experiment with the automatic categories tool. I didn't realize I had made such a mess. Thanks for the clean up - Williamborg (Bill) 05:50, 23 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

  • Thx for that - although in the sandbox you find yourself keeping right on polishing, because you start to get scared of leaving anything out . . . just one more inline ref . . . In the end you just have to let go. I'd been hoping to find a ghost story - I know there has been some talk, as I got a hint of it from one of the contractors a few years ago.--Storye book (talk) 19:51, 19 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
