Please let me know what you think about the proposal to revise the text in the introductory paragraph, GROUP 5!

Thank you for this Rainbow. Great job! Since we were discussing today during our meeting several ideas regarding VAW page, I think they should be included in this draft. This is today's group meeting's result. Emma saved it in our common google doc.

Further Ideas to Improve our whole article “Violence Against Women”

Under section on “Impacts on Society”, we should add a subsection called “Health impacts/effects of Violence Against Women” (Table will be provided)

Chart with 6 different definitions of “Violence Against Women” (so not only 1 is represented, the UN one)

Include Political ECONOMY aspects of violence against women too

Under “Domestic Violence” section, add chart showing that as Gender Equality scores increase, occurrence of intimate partner violence decreases.

In addition to that, in subsection "Forced marriage" there is a small mistake that should be corrected: ofter = other: " A forced marriage is also often the result of a dispute between families, where the dispute is 'resolved' by giving a female from one family to the ofter." "The custom of bride kidnapping continues to exist in some societies, such as Central Asia and the Caucasus, or parts of Africa, especially Ethiopia." - We would suggest to say "in some regions (such as CA and Caucasus)/countries of Central Asia such as Kyrgyzistan, Kazakhstan" since Central Asia consists of 5 states that NOT all of them has this custom. By saying some societies, such Central Asia, it might give wrong information/misinformation.

I am wondering, should FGM be included into Domestic violence or FGM as broad issue goes beyond domestic violence?

Gender-based violence by male college athletes - to move this section to the Domestic violence (?) because it happens moslty between intimate partners and athletes commit domestic violence? or to create new section titled sexual assault which describes GBV by college athletes? Dnigmonova (talk)

  • Dilnoza: Rainbow, good job! Just several comments:

1. or known in short as VAW - put it in brackets?

2. There is very useful Table/chart with 6 types of definition of VAW (adopted by different international institutions) given by Lori Heise, if Im not mistaken. We could include that table under VAW's definition section. Need to check with Ioanna regarding table's uploading policy.

3. Many types of violence are considered to be violence against women. - here appears the question WHy? shall we expand it?

4. Great idea to include WHO Table!

5. This part I think will be developed further by Camille. It overalps with her section. Significant progress towards the protection of women from violence has been made on international level as a product of collective effort of lobbying by many women’s rights movements; international organizations to civil society groups. As a result, worldwide governments and international as well as civil society organizations actively work to combat violence against women through a variety of programs. Among the major achievements of the women’s rights movements against violence on girls and women, the landmark accomplishments are "the Declaration on the Elimination of Violence Against Women” that implies “political will towards addressing VAW ” and the legal binding agreement, “the Convention on Elimination of all forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW).”[3] In addition, the UN General Assembly resolution also designated 25 November as International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.[5]"

Hi Rainbow! Thanks for this impressive piece of work!... I find it very complete, especially the table where you explain the possible types of violence suffered throughout life. I would advise you to be mindful that some types of violence can appear during more than one stage of life (meaning, they can overlap), for example prostitution can affect girls and adolescents. I see that you have already considered this, but keep it in mind since some other categories might overlap too. For the stage of "adulthood", you could potentially include Obstetric Violence too, which is the subsection I have added. Cheers! ClaraeFranco (talk) 19:40, 2 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
