Welcome

Somewhat belated, but welcome to Wikipedia! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Please sign your messages on discussion pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically insert your username and the date. If you need help, check out Wikipedia:Questions, ask me on talk page, or ask your question on this page and then place {{helpme}} before the question.

I've reverted your change at Earl Hines. If you'd like, let's discuss this at talk:Earl Hines, but most sources put his birth date as 1903 not 1905 (even though his gravestone says 1905). I noticed you also changed George Lindsey's birth date from 1928 to 1935. Again, sources differ. Assuming his UNA biography is correct about the year he graduated, if he was born in 1935 he graduated at the age of 16! I think it's far more likely that he's shaved a few years off his age for professional reasons. It's great that you're on the lookout for small details, but I'd encourage you to seek multiple sources and include sources you're using as references in the article. If you don't want to worry about formatting, the easiest way to cite a web page is "[" http:whatever "]", like this [1].

Again, welcome! -- Rick Block (talk) 17:39, 28 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Birthdates and sources

edit

I noticed a few edits you have made to biography articles, which changed the birthdates. An example would be this edit to Eubie Blake, in which you removed three different citations, including Blake's World War I Draft Registration Card, his U.S. Passport Application and the Twelfth Census of the United States: 1900 for Baltimore, Maryland, in favor of a url, in the edit summary and not in the article itself, to the Find A Grave website, which gives a birth date based on a stone monument made after his death with no verification of where it was or who had it made. In doing genealogy work for years, I can tell you that one can never go by what is put on a headstone or monument because errors are so easily made. On the other hand, one must have a birth certificate for draft registration and passport applications, and I rather doubt that a census taker would make an error between a 7 year old child and a 3 year old child in 1900. For purposes of Wikipedia, we must use sources that are considered reliable and from third party sources who have vetted the information. Between a monument vs. several US government databases from information submitted at the time, the government database info is absolutely more reliable.

In looking at your contributions, please never remove cited and sourced information from an article and leave your justification as "Goto: http://www.nndb.com" or something similar. I would suggest you first learn to make a reference citation by reading WP:REF, and then look closely at what you are suggesting is the higher authority. Sites such as The Notable Names Database or Find-a-Death, or various fansites [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] [7] [8] are never considered reliable to source dates and personal facts. Please review policy regarding reliable sources. Thank you. Wildhartlivie (talk) 02:09, 9 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Once again, please do not change birth dates and leave an edit summary of "Goto: http://www.fashionmodeldirectory.com/models/Elle_MacPherson". Use the formats described in WP:REF and actually cite your sources in the article where you change vital information. This is a standard Wikipedia rule and is necessary to prove your changes or they may be reverted. Let me remind you again that The Notable Names Database and also that a celebrity can easily lie on their websites about their date of birth, it's a common thing that years are shaved off to give the appearance of being younger. Wildhartlivie (talk) 04:54, 29 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
This is the last time I am warning you about this. It is not acceptable for you to remove references to a birthdate, change it and then stick an edit summary like "Goto: http://www.fashionmodeldirectory.com/models/Elle_MacPherson" to support your change. I have given you every opportunity to learn how to add references properly, gave you a link to a page that tells you exactly how to do so, gave you a link to learn about reliable sources and warned you about using unreliable websites as your source. From this point forward, I will report each time you to this as vandalism, which may well result in your being blocked from editing. a fansite is never a reliable source to replace dates taken from official government documents. Please stop. Wildhartlivie (talk) 09:47, 4 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

April 2009

edit

Please stop your disruptive editing. If you continue to vandalize Wikipedia, as you did at Doris Day, you will be blocked from editing. Because you have had sufficient and ongoing warnings about your method of changing birthdates, from this point forward, edits that are based on fansite, NNDB, and other unreliable sources to birthdates will be dealt with as vandalism. If you cannot learn to discern reliable sources and add references properly, such edits will be considered vandalism. You've been asked to stop this practice, I would advise you to do so. Sock puppeting

edit

If you are the same person as User: Aquarpio, I will have to take action and report for sock puppeting. Your editing patterns are similar and prove to me that you are one person.Carmaker1 (talk) 05:43, 26 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

ArbCom elections are now open!

edit

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
