Recent changes
- On Wikisource there is a special page listing pages of works without corresponding scan images. Now you can use the new magic word
__EXPECTWITHOUTSCANS__
to exclude certain pages (list of editions or translations of works) from that list. [1] - If you use the user-preference "Show preview without reloading the page", then the template-page feature "Preview page with this template (what's this?)" will now also work without reloading the page. [2]
- Kartographer maps can now specify an alternative text via the
alt=
attribute. This is identical in usage to thealt=
attribute in the image and gallery syntax. An exception for this feature is wikis like Wikivoyage where the miniature maps are interactive. [3] - The old Guided Tour for the "New Filters for Edit Review" feature has been removed. It was created in 2017 to show people with older accounts how the interface had changed, and has now been seen by most of the intended people. [4]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 14 May. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 15 May. It will be on all wikis from 16 May (calendar). [5][6]
- The Special:Search results page will now use CSS flex attributes, for better accessibility, instead of a table. If you have a gadget or script that adjusts search results, you should update your script to the new HTML structure. [7]
Future changes
- In the Vector 2022 skin, main pages will be displayed at full width (like special pages). The goal is to keep the number of characters per line large enough. This is related to the coming changes to typography in Vector 2022. Learn more. [8]
- Two columns of the
pagelinks
database table (pl_namespace
andpl_title
) are being dropped soon. Users must use two columns of the newlinktarget
table instead (lt_namespace
andlt_title
). In your existing SQL queries:- Replace
JOIN pagelinks
withJOIN linktarget
andpl_
withlt_
in theON
statement - Below that add
JOIN pagelinks ON lt_id = pl_target_id
- See phab:T222224 for technical reasoning. [9][10]

Recent changes
- The Nuke feature, which enables administrators to mass delete pages, will now correctly delete pages which were moved to another title. [11]
- New changes have been made to the UploadWizard in Wikimedia Commons: the overall layout has been improved, by following new styling and spacing for the form and its fields; the headers and helper text for each of the fields was changed; the Caption field is now a required field, and there is an option for users to copy their caption into the media description. [12][13]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 21 May. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 22 May. It will be on all wikis from 23 May (calendar). [14][15]
- The HTML used to render all headings is being changed to improve accessibility. It will change on 22 May in some skins (Timeless, Modern, CologneBlue, Nostalgia, and Monobook). Please test gadgets on your wiki on these skins and report any related problems so that they can be resolved before this change is made in all other skins. The developers are also considering the introduction of a Gadget API for adding buttons to section titles if that would be helpful to tool creators, and would appreciate any input you have on that.

Recent changes
- Several bugs related to the latest updates to the UploadWizard on Wikimedia Commons have been fixed. For more information, see T365107 and T365119.
- In March 2024 a new addPortlet API was added to allow gadgets to create new portlets (menus) in the skin. In certain skins this can be used to create dropdowns. Gadget developers are invited to try it and give feedback.
- Some CSS in the Minerva skin has been removed to enable easier community configuration. Interface editors should check the rendering on mobile devices for aspects related to the classes:
.collapsible
,.multicol
,.reflist
,.coordinates
,.topicon
. Further details are available on replacement CSS if it is needed.
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 28 May. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 29 May. It will be on all wikis from 30 May (calendar). [16][17]
- When you visit a wiki where you don't yet have a local account, local rules such as edit filters can sometimes prevent your account from being created. Starting this week, MediaWiki takes your global rights into account when evaluating whether you can override such local rules. [18]

Question from Gumbymma (02:42, 1 June 2024)
Hi, how do you go about creating an image to use for Wikipedia? Or is it only possible to use Wikimedia commons? --Gumbymma (talk) 02:42, 1 June 2024 (UTC)
- Hi Gumbymma! We recommend using Wikimedia Commons for images you intend to use on Wikipedia since the two are connected and it helps keep all out images in one place (Commons). As an example, the image in this section is hosted on Commons, but I can use it here on Wikipedia using File:Old_Point_Loma_Lighthouse.png. Where it's uploaded doesn't matter much. There are some narrow exceptions to our image copyright rules, and if the image you want to use falls under those, you should upload it to Wikipedia and not Commons, but that would only apply if it's an image you did not create or do not have a license for. Let me know if you have other questions or want anything clarified! — Wug·a·po·des 02:56, 1 June 2024 (UTC)

Question from Tonkarooson (02:31, 5 June 2024)
Hello! My current mentor is away right now but I have a question that's really bugging me. I'm trying to add the list of lower alpha references(s) to my user page but I can't seem to find the correct template. I edit on the Wikipedia app and calls the [a] notes as "lower alpha (reference)", something like that. --Tonkarooson (talk) *new editor* 02:31, 5 June 2024 (UTC)
- Hi Tonkarooson, you needed to use {{notelist}} to get the end notes to render, see this edit. Let me know if you need help with anything else, and happy editing! — Wug·a·po·des 21:30, 5 June 2024 (UTC)
Question from Jazz Pack (09:27, 5 June 2024)
Hello! I'd like to make an article about a kinda obscure thing, but the only sources I can find about it are not independent. What do I do? --Jazz Pack (talk) 09:27, 5 June 2024 (UTC)
- Hi Jazz Pack In general, if you cannot find sources that are independent of the subject, then it does not satisfy Wikipedia's inclusion criteria. There are a few exceptions depending on what the article is about. What article were you interested in writing? — Wug·a·po·des 21:33, 5 June 2024 (UTC)
- I was gonna write about SAIKAC (Saudi Arabian Inter-Kingdom Activities Conference), which is organization between a bunch of international schools in Saudi Arabia to do activities like sports and music. Jazz Pack (talk) 05:02, 6 June 2024 (UTC)
- @Jazz Pack: You should read our inclusion criteria for organizations which would cover SAIKAC. The criteria aren't much different from our general criteria but it does give tips and suggestions specific to organizations like SAIKAC. Personally, it sounds like an organization that might have sources, but maybe they aren't in English. Do you know the organization's name in Arabic? If so, you should try searching for the Arabic name. You might also want to look at websites and newspapers that cover local news in the area where the schools compete. If you need help with either of those, you can look at Category:User_ar which lists editors who speak Arabic. Someone on that list might be willing to help you with that search. It's also possible that the sources don't exist yet, in which case you might want to edit the articles on the participating schools. Hope that helps, and be in touch if I can help more! — Wug·a·po·des 18:29, 6 June 2024 (UTC)

Recent changes
- The software used to render SVG files has been updated to a new version, fixing many longstanding bugs in SVG rendering. [24]
- The HTML used to render all headings is being changed to improve accessibility. It was changed last week in some skins (Vector legacy and Minerva). Please test gadgets on your wiki on these skins and report any related problems so that they can be resolved before this change is made in Vector-2022. The developers are still considering the introduction of a Gadget API for adding buttons to section titles if that would be helpful to tool creators, and would appreciate any input you have on that.
- The HTML markup used for citations by Parsoid changed last week. In places where Parsoid previously added the
mw-reference-text
class, Parsoid now also adds thereference-text
class for better compatibility with the legacy parser. More details are available. [25]
Problems
- There was a bug with the Content Translation interface that caused the tools menus to appear in the wrong location. This has now been fixed. [26]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 11 June. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 12 June. It will be on all wikis from 13 June (calendar). [27][28]
- The new version of MediaWiki includes another change to the HTML markup used for citations: Parsoid will now generate a
<span class="mw-cite-backlink">
wrapper for both named and unnamed references for better compatibility with the legacy parser. Interface administrators should verify that gadgets that interact with citations are compatible with the new markup. More details are available. [29] - On multilingual wikis that use the
<translate>
system, there is a feature that shows potentially-outdated translations with a pink background until they are updated or confirmed. From this week, confirming translations will be logged, and there is a new user-right that can be required for confirming translations if the community requests it. [30]

Question from Tonkarooson (03:52, 7 June 2024)
pretty much all of the edits I've made consisting of adding K-Pop to the infoboxes got removed, most of them being said K-Pop isn't a genre. I think it is a genre. but to avoid biased opinions (which it isn't), I have a topic open for discussion named, "Is K-Pop a music genre?" I want a consensus on this, so how do I make this discussion more known to establish this consensus?? --—Tonkarooson (talk) 03:52, 7 June 2024 (UTC)
- Hi again Tonkarooson! Nice to hear from you. I would recommend leaving an objective and neutrally worded notice on WT:WikiProject Music and maybe WT:WikiProject Korea to alert interested editors to the discussion. Those seem like places where people with knowledge on this topic would look for notices. Before doing this, I recommend you read the policy on appropriate and inappropriate notifications of discussion. It has some suggestions for other places to consider posting, and some common pitfalls to avoid. After a couple weeks of discussion, get in touch with me and I can give my opinions on what if any consensus there is on the issue. Hope that helps! — Wug·a·po·des 19:09, 8 June 2024 (UTC)
- Wow, how did I not think of the WikiProjects? I will definitely read that policy, thanks for all the help! :D
- I thought of another question. Is it possible to have more than one mentors? —Tonkarooson (talk) 23:42, 8 June 2024 (UTC)
- @Tonkarooson: I'm not sure how the interface works, but you're welcome to ask me (or anyone) questions as they come up. People are generally friendly and willing to help if you ask. — Wug·a·po·des 17:34, 11 June 2024 (UTC)

Recent changes
- People who attempt to add an external link in the visual editor will now receive immediate feedback if they attempt to link to a domain that a project has decided to block. Please see Edit check for more details. [31]
- The new Community Configuration extension is available on Test Wikipedia. This extension allows communities to customize specific features to meet their local needs. Currently only Growth features are configurable, but the extension will support other Community Configuration use cases in the future. [32][33]
- The dark mode beta feature is now available on category and help pages, as well as more special pages. There may be contrast issues. Please report bugs on the project talk page. [34]
Problems
- Cloud Services tools were not available for 25 minutes last week. This was caused by a faulty hardware cable in the data center. [35]
- Last week, styling updates were made to the Vector 2022 skin. This caused unforeseen issues with templates, hatnotes, and images. Changes to templates and hatnotes were reverted. Most issues with images were fixed. If you still see any, report them here. [36]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 18 June. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 19 June. It will be on all wikis from 20 June (calendar). [37][38]
- Starting June 18, the Reference Edit Check will be deployed to a new set of Wikipedias. This feature is intended to help newcomers and to assist edit-patrollers by inviting people who are adding new content to a Wikipedia article to add a citation when they do not do so themselves. During a test at 11 wikis, the number of citations added more than doubled when Reference Check was shown to people. Reference Check is community configurable. [39]
- Mailing lists will be unavailable for roughly two hours on Tuesday 10:00–12:00 UTC. This is to enable migration to a new server and upgrade its software. [40]

Today I wanted to write a happy song story, on a friend's birthday, but instead we have the word of thunder on top of it, which would have been better on 2 June, this year's first Sunday after Trinity. The new lilypond - thanks to DanCherek - is quite impressive. As my 2 Jun story said: Bach was fired up. - Today's Main page is rich in music, also Franz Liszt and a conductor. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:37, 11 June 2024 (UTC)

Recent changes
- Editors will notice that there have been some changes to the background color of text in the diff view, and the color of the byte-change numbers, last week. These changes are intended to make text more readable in both light mode and dark mode, and are part of a larger effort to increase accessibility. You can share your comments or questions on the project talkpage. [41]
- The text colors that are used for visited-links, hovered-links, and active-links, were also slightly changed last week to improve their accessibility in both light mode and dark mode. [42]
Problems
- You can copy permanent links to talk page comments by clicking on a comment's timestamp. This feature did not always work when the topic title was very long and the link was used as a wikitext link. This has been fixed. Thanks to Lofhi for submitting the bug. [43]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 25 June. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 26 June. It will be on all wikis from 27 June (calendar). [44][45]
- Starting 26 June, all talk pages messages' timestamps will become a link at English Wikipedia, making this feature available for you to use at all wikis. This link is a permanent link to the comment. It allows users to find the comment they were linked to, even if this comment has since been moved elsewhere. You can read more about this feature on Diff or on Mediawiki.org. [46]

Hi Wugapodes, I've made a special holding area for the Olympics but WugBot throws a spanner in the works. Any suggestions how to ensure that it stays there? Schwede66 06:00, 25 June 2024 (UTC)
- Hi Schwede66 The section needs to be below the standard special occasion holding area heading, but before the Approved Nominations header. Once WugBot encounters
==Special occasion holding area==
it treats everything as part of the SOHA and keeps it as-is until it encounters==Approved nominations==
where it starts processing nominations again. As long as the holding area is between those two, it should stick around. — Wug·a·po·des 20:28, 25 June 2024 (UTC)- Thanks for the explainer and thank you also for fixing this already. Much appreciated. Schwede66 03:42, 26 June 2024 (UTC)
Question from Tonkarooson (07:04, 25 June 2024)
Hi again, my current mentor is still away even though that message went away lol. Here are the questions I had sent to him that I really want to know the answer to:
- Is it possible to have more than one mentors/have two separate people to adopt the same user?
- Do I need special permission or ask high rank editor to make pages that are not articles? —Tonkarooson (talk) 07:04, 25 June 2024 (UTC)
- Hi Tonkarooson
- I don't understand what you mean by "drop box"? What templates have you been looking at?
- Formally, I don't know how those processes work well enough to say for sure, but informally yes most long-term editors have had many informal mentors so you're welcome to ask for support from anyone you like.
- Usually not. What kind of page were you thinking of making and why?
- — Wug·a·po·des 20:43, 25 June 2024 (UTC)
- On the Wikipedia app, you can click on the infobox for it to be viewed but if you click it again it goes away and is smaller.
- Awesome! That's so great to know!
- Like redirects, archives, or having another page for my user page (eg. User:insert username/blah blah etc). I can just do those on my own? And why? Because of discussions about wanting to change the article name and adding a redirect page or redirects to the thing that isn't an article (eg. Fire Alarm (Lil Uzi Vert song), or Autistic).
- —Tonkarooson (talk) 22:36, 25 June 2024 (UTC)
- (1) I don't know anything about the app, so I don't think I can help here. You might want to ask at The Tea House or The Technical Village Pump. (3) You can just make those on your own, but read the guideline on redirects first. Also, don't make archives or subpages for anyone without their permission because it is considered rude. — Wug·a·po·des 21:24, 26 June 2024 (UTC)
- Here's the template I was using: Template:Userboxes. —Tonkarooson (talk) 23:43, 26 June 2024 (UTC)

Update about Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Music#Is_K-Pop_a_music_genre?
So it's been 2 weeks since our last discussion here.
Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Music#Is_K-Pop_a_music_genre? hasn't been active since 22:47, 12 June 2024 (UTC). And the link for the for the last message is this here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Music#c-Tonkarooson-20240612224700-QuietHere-20240612000200.
Feel free to read that discussion on WikiProject Music. There hasn't been any messages about this on WikiProject Korea. —Tonkarooson (talk) 04:59, 20 June 2024 (UTC)
- Hi again Tonkarooson, I've taken a look a the discussion. The consensus seems to be that we should not refer to K-Pop as a genre. The first reason is that the K-Pop article itself is not clear on whether it is a genre. Even the most knowledgable writers on the subject cannot come to an agreement on how to define it, so it is too soon to make a firm decision one way or the other. The second reason is that similar topics like J-Rock have been removed from genre lists, so even outside of K-Pop there seems to be no agreement on whether "music from an East Asian country" is a genre. Based on the discussion, I would recommend you avoid adding K-Pop to genre lists for now. — Wug·a·po·des 20:57, 25 June 2024 (UTC)
- I see.
- The article "Korean hip hop" says quote, "Korean hip-hop, also known as K-hip-hop or K-rap, is a subgenre of the South Korean popular music.". This page has a template mentioning that the article is written from the person's own perspective. I never mention this in the original post because I wasn't sure if it was good enough as evidence if K-Pop is a music genre or not.
- I also know of another discussion about this that isn't on Wikipedia.
- Well, I still think K-Pop is a music genre (reasons listed at the top of the discussion), but my opinion can't be used all across, so maybe a RfC could work, especially seeing how popular K-Pop is. —Tonkarooson (talk) 22:39, 25 June 2024 (UTC)
- @Tonkarooson: An RfC would not be a good idea right now. If you feel strongly about this, you should first do research on how reliable, independent, secondary sources describe K-Pop or the music industry in East Asia generally. This would require you to look at reliable sources that specialize in music. I'm not an expert in this area, but I would imagine some examples would be Rolling Stone or its East Asian peers. You might also look at articles in academic journals which study these industries. Without this kind of evidence, you will not be able to convince the rest of the community that you are correct. Sergecross73 and QuietHere both seem knowledgeable about music publications and general research. You should ask them if they know of any places where you could start your search. As a bonus, your research could help you improve the Korean hip hop page in the meantime. — Wug·a·po·des 21:15, 26 June 2024 (UTC)
- Sounds great, and fun! But how exactly sources would find the correct answer if this is mostly about opinions and original research some? —Tonkarooson (talk) 23:27, 26 June 2024 (UTC)
- On Wikipedia, we follow WP:V - we go by what reliable sources say. Original research is a problem when it comes directly from editors like you and me. It's not a problem when it comes from publications like Billboard or Rolling Stone.
- My two cents, as I think I mentioned before, would be to take much more time learning Wikipedia and how it works before pursuing this. This is bound to be a rather high level, contentious discussion. I'd work on learning the basics first. (No offense, but even though your account is 5 years old, you're just over 400 edits. That's not very much.) Sergecross73 msg me 13:54, 27 June 2024 (UTC)
- So, what should I start first with, learn more about Wikipedia or what @Wugapodes had said?
- I had forgotten that I had a Wikipedia account. This is also easy to see I'm not a long time editor —Tonkarooson (talk) 20:56, 27 June 2024 (UTC)

Recent changes
- Over the next three weeks, dark mode will become available for all users, both logged-in and logged-out, starting with the mobile web version. This fulfils one of the top-requested community wishes, and improves low-contrast reading and usage in low-light settings. As part of these changes, dark mode will also work on User-pages and Portals. There is more information in the latest Web team update. [47]
- Logged-in users can now set global preferences for the text-size and dark-mode, thanks to a combined effort across Foundation teams. This allows Wikimedians using multiple wikis to set up a consistent reading experience easily, for example by switching between light and dark mode only once for all wikis. [48]
- If you use a very old web browser some features might not work on the Wikimedia wikis. This affects Internet Explorer 11 and versions of Chrome, Firefox and Safari older than 2016. This change makes it possible to use new CSS features and to send less code to all readers. [49][50]
- Wikipedia Admins can customize local wiki configuration options easily using Community Configuration. Community Configuration was created to allow communities to customize how some features work, because each language wiki has unique needs. At the moment, admins can configure Growth features on their home wikis, in order to better recruit and retain new editors. More options will be provided in the coming months. [51]
- Editors interested in language issues that are related to Unicode standards, can now discuss those topics at a new conversation space in MediaWiki.org. The Wikimedia Foundation is now a member of the Unicode Consortium, and the coordination group can collaboratively review the issues discussed and, where appropriate, bring them to the attention of the Unicode Consortium.
- One new wiki has been created: a Wikipedia in Mandailing (
w:btm:
) [52]
Problems
- Editors can once again click on links within the visual editor's citation-preview, thanks to a bug fix by the Editing Team. [53]

Question from Tonkarooson (00:27, 1 July 2024)
Hello again, I hope you are having a good day! I have a couple questions I would appreciate an answer for.
- How can I tell if a website is reliable enough?
- Is https://www.merriam-webster.com/ and https://www.dictionary.com/ (considered) reliable as a source/citation? --Tonkarooson (discuss). 00:27, 1 July 2024 (UTC)
- @Tonkarooson: If you hadn't seen it already, I would recommend reading our guideline on identifying reliable sources. The main takeaway is that "reliable" is very contextual. For a given claim, is the source of the claim an authority on the matter? For something like music, I'd trust industry professionals, musicians, trade magazines, and musicologists over fan zines, blog posts, or experts in fields that aren't music. So while dictionaries like Merriam-Webster are usually reliable, being a generalist source means they might not be as convincing as, say, a trade magazine since the authors of dictionaries are rarely experts in the topics they write about. — Wug·a·po·des 20:49, 10 July 2024 (UTC)
Question from Sourcetostar (16:43, 3 July 2024)
Hello, I am new to Wiki, I just noticed you are my mentor, which I very much appreciate!
I have been trying to create a page for ICC FraudNet. I was working on this last year, but had some other projects took priority, and 6 months passed, hence the page got deleted. Yesterday I requested the draft be re-instated but it was denied.
Can you help me please? If you can't help, I understand, however, if it's not too much trouble please do let me know.
Look forward to hearing from you. --Sourcetostar (talk) 16:43, 3 July 2024 (UTC)
- Hi Sourcetostar it looks like Graeme Bartlett restored the draft at Draft:ICC FraudNet. Is that what you were looking for? — Wug·a·po·des 21:58, 10 July 2024 (UTC)
Mention in blogpost/twitter
Hi Wugapodes,
You might want to know that you were mentioned (in a positive light) in this article on David Gerard, as well as in the Twitter discussion surrounding the article.
Have a great day! agucova (talk) 14:42, 11 July 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks Agucova. I skimmed the article, and while interesting, it's quite long and I don't think I'm the target audience for it since I have no real interest in online rationalist communities. I appreciate the heads-up though. If there's a conduct concern that occurred after the 2021 discussion quoted, I'd recommend contacting the Arbitration Committee or the new conflict of interest report system. — Wug·a·po·des 23:17, 11 July 2024 (UTC)
Question from Tonkarooson (08:04, 12 July 2024)
Hello again. Straight to the point. I recently made this and I can't seem to figure out the Reflist template. This isn't the first time I've encountered it. So what is it? --Tonkarooson (discuss). 08:04, 12 July 2024 (UTC)
- @Tonkarooson: You need to use ref tags around your citations for them to show up in {{reflist}}. The code would look something like
<ref>{{cite web|...}}</ref>
