I've got a couple of starter categories here. If what you want to talk about doesn't fit in these, start a new category.

Nomenclature

Despite what I said about "bands" vs. "musical artists", I think the most appropriate name for the main article (TFBA) is "Taper-friendly bands. With "Bands that allow taping" in second place. Both are common terms-of-art, and things people are likely to search for. On the other hand, I think the category should be called something like "Musical acts which allow fan taping". But I'm very much open to alternate suggestions. Xtifr 10:55, 16 September 2006 (UTC)

What bands to include

I would prefer to be fairly inclusive, i.e. I think Metallica should be included. I think they're as valid an example as the Grateful Dead (who also don't currently allow taping, albeit for completely different reasons). On the other hand, I would tend to leave out bands who don't have any official policy on the matter, no matter how much they might be willing to overlook tapers.

I'm not sure about bands-that-didn't-allow-taping-but-now-allow-trading like Jimi and Warren Zevon. I'm curious to hear what others think. Xtifr 10:55, 16 September 2006 (UTC)

I think a list is more appropriate than a category in this case. the problem with a category is that it can only ever be a collection of internal links, and even if I click on a link I'm not necessarily going to find anything relevant to the artist's taper-friendliness in the article. Surely it'd more useful to go about adding references and specific details for each entry at List of bands which permit recordings of their performances, tedious though that job may be. But then if people are looking up the artist directly, they'll have to go to the list to find details about the artist's taper-friendliness. And that assumes they even know the list exists. If we're going to add information and details about an artist's taper-friendliness to Wikipedia (and I think we should), I think it makes more sense to add that information to the artist's article, rather than to some separate list. If the information belongs in Wikipedia at all, then it belongs in the articles about the artists, IMO.

I think it's futile to expect Wikipedia to duplicate the efforts of BTAT or other similar resources, if that's what you're looking for. You are right that the list can be improved. But so can the articles. I think it would be better to improve the articles. But maybe that's just me.
