Russian colonialism

In regards to Russian colonialism. [1] [2] The above links detail some examples of attempts by Russian Empire at Russification of other non-Russian population.

Also Polish and Lithuanian nobles had their property confiscated and given to settled ethnic Russians. [3] The confiscated estates were awarded to Russian officials. Every opportunity was used to dispossess Polish landowners front tbeir homesteads. Over eight hundred families were forced to sell their estates and all of them went to Russians, as, by the ukase of the Tsar proclaimed in 1865 only Russians had the right to buy land in Lithuania and Ruthenia. As long as Russian rule lasted the Poles could not acquire land in two sections of the former Polish Republic The impoverished Polish nobles who did not own any real estate were ordered to leave the country and were forcibly settled in Russia.

Molobo, don't spread your flaming Russophobia to more pages. As explained at article's talk, Russification is a valid issue all right but has nothing to do with colonization. If anyone ever colonized Ukraine, it was your homeland as said directly even in Britannica. Depends what Brittanica means by colonised and what you mean. Your allegations that Russian occupation of Ukrainians was beneficial because in XIX century towns developed is rather unproven-the world as a whole developed in XIX century as a result of Industrial Revolution. Anyway Russia engaged in colonial practice-it aimed at destroying of national identity, settled ethnic Russians as a ruling class, and exploited economically areas it conquered-as was the case with Polish territory under Russian Partitions which faced severe economic sanctions after it became economical rival to interests of main Russian provinces. --Molobo 22:54, 1 March 2006 (UTC) :No, Poland did. Molobo, I said nothing about Russia being beneficial for Ukraine and stuff. I made a narrow statement that the term Colonization is not applicable to the Russian policies in Ukraine. There was oppression, assimilation and a couple of other things. The term Colonization, however, is wrong. Destroying of national indentity, is assimilation and not colonization. Presenting scholary sources about Russian colonisation of Lithuania, Ukraine and Poland is russophobia Irpen ? Why, British colonisation of India is far more lighter then Russian colonisation of those areas for example. --Molobo 23:14, 1 March 2006 (UTC)

Colonialism is the extension of a nation's sovereignty over territory and people outside its own boundaries, often to facilitate economic domination over their resources, labor, and markets. The term also refers to a set of beliefs used to legitimize or promote this system, especially the belief that the mores of the colonizer are superior to those of the colonized.
