editYou may have missed my question and ping. Can you tell me what led you to edit the article Woman today? Some bit of news, a video, a tweet, a forum post? Something? Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 18:01, 30 August 2023 (UTC)
Introduction to contentious topics
editYou have recently edited a page related to gender-related disputes or controversies or people associated with them, a topic designated as contentious. This standard message is designed as an introduction to contentious topics and does not imply that there are any issues with your editing.
A special set of rules applies to certain topic areas, which are referred to as contentious topics. These are specially designated topics that tend to attract more persistent disruptive editing than the rest of the project and have been designated as contentious topics by the Arbitration Committee. When editing a contentious topic, Wikipedia’s norms and policies are more strictly enforced, and Wikipedia administrators have special powers in order to reduce disruption to the project.
Within contentious topics, editors should edit carefully and constructively, refrain from disrupting the encyclopedia, and:
- adhere to the purposes of Wikipedia;
- comply with all applicable policies and guidelines;
- follow editorial and behavioural best practice;
- comply with any page restrictions in force within the area of conflict; and
- refrain from gaming the system.
Editors are advised to err on the side of caution if unsure whether making a particular edit is consistent with these expectations. If you have any questions about contentious topics procedures you may ask them at the arbitration clerks' noticeboard or you may learn more about this contentious topic here. You may also choose to note which contentious topics you know about by using the {{Ctopics/aware}} template.
At Talk:Woman
editI've removed this comment. Under no circumstances should you speculate that an article subject "looks like a man", nor should you assume that someone you think looks masculine is therefore a trans woman. This is incredibly inappropriate, both for Wikipedia discussion (where it runs afoul of the strict policies on writing about living people), and also in general (as it reflects ignorant conceptions about gender and the diversity of human bodies). For an accessible rundown on how to respectfully speak about transgender people (something editors are expected to at least attempt, when contributing to this topic area), I invite you to check out The Radical Copyeditor’s Style Guide for Writing About Transgender People. Other such resources are organized at Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Gender identity § Other style guides. –RoxySaunders 🏳️⚧️ (💬 • 📝) 18:48, 30 August 2023 (UTC)
- OK. I didn't mean to hurt anyone.
- I think the image should be replaced so it doesn't cause any controversy that wastes people's time. -- YavBav09 (talk) 18:54, 30 August 2023 (UTC)
- Not to unduly repeat others, but where did you hear about this? Clearly this made the rounds somewhere on the internet. CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n!⚓ 18:56, 30 August 2023 (UTC)
- My best guess is residue from last month where a sockpuppet briefly replaced the image lead with Rachel Levine, presumably as a form of concern trolling, before being quickly reverted. I actually had a hand in the revert Special:Diff/1163913070 although I don't remember it happening. The resulting screenshot of that article version was of course circulated by the usual reactionaries. –RoxySaunders 🏳️⚧️ (💬 • 📝) 19:44, 30 August 2023 (UTC)

- I'm going to go a bit farther. The subject of that photo, Agnes Ngieng, is an identifiable living person. If you continue to speculate about her private medical details, including with "just asking questions" comments to the effect of "if she's trans", you may be subject to administrative sanctions under the BLP policy and/or the contentious topics for gender mentioned above. Please note that the BLP topic area is also a contentious topic. -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (she|they|xe) 21:46, 30 August 2023 (UTC)
