"destruction" vs "significant damage"

edit

In the article "Soft Landing", I had changed "significant damage or destruction" to just "significant damage". I felt that "without causing significant damage" included "without causing the destruction".

Why do you feel it is important to include the phrase "or destruction"?

Jmichael ll (talk) 16:46, 9 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

Jmichael ll "Significant damage" and "destruction" are two distinct terms. "Significant damage" generally means heavy but repairable damage, while "destruction" means heavy, non-repairable damage. A soft landing results in neither significant damage nor destruction. - ZLEA T\C 18:17, 9 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
I don't think anyone would say "it was destroyed, but it did not suffer significant damage".
Jmichael ll (talk) 03:04, 10 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
Jmichael ll One also would not say "It crashed, but did not land", though "crash" and "land" have two distict meanings. - ZLEA T\C 14:39, 10 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

Northrop navbox

edit

Hi, you changed the scope of Template:Northrop aircraft to include aircraft engines last June but I can't easily see the engine article links. Can you help? Cheers Nimbus (Cumulus nimbus floats by) 11:11, 16 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

Nimbus227 I wasn't actually the one to change the scope of the navbox. I only noticed the following text in the template, "Only aircraft, aero engines, and missiles are linked here," so I added "aircraft engines" to the header. I just went through the template and found that only one aircraft engine, the Northrop-Hendy XT37, is actually linked (N-10 and N-19 in the company designations). - ZLEA T\C 14:45, 16 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
I just added an engines section to the template. - ZLEA T\C 14:47, 16 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, one engine then. I was going by this diff that changed the visible title. Nimbus (Cumulus nimbus floats by) 16:54, 16 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

Tip of the Month

edit

This tip is one of the many ways to combat spam on Wikipedia:

  • On Wikipedia, articles either meet the General Notability Guideline or not. When you come across a new article, it is extremely important to determine if it is a real article, or just a spam article. Start with a search on Google, for reliable sources, if you get none in return, then look at the article for non-NPOV content, also scan the references section in the article to see what sources it uses, and check the 'other languages' section and Wikidata to see if it is on other Wikipedias. If other Wikipedias have the same content and/or a CSD or AfD tag (WP:AFD) it is likely spam or not notable, so you can then nominate it for deletion to get input, remember that CSD criterion does not always apply to these articles depending on the content/contex. Also remember to check for copyright violations via earwig's

Reverted changes in The End

edit

Dear ZLEA: If you remember, you undid my last change. I added it because in the Spanish version of this wiki there was this phrase, which says: A pesar de que ésta es la última página de Wikipedia, existe el rumor de que hay una página después de ésta, aunque se mantiene sin contenido. ¿La encontraste? I just literally translated and put on the English version of this webpage, so no vandalism was intended. If you understand, please revert your reversion of my edit.

Thank you: — Preceding unsigned comment added by Carel3DS (talkcontribs) 07:51, 29 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

Carel3DS The translated text you added does not fit with the English version of the page and it doesn't make much sense. Thank you for trying to help, though. - ZLEA T\C 13:48, 29 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

USAF amphibious aircraft

edit

Just to note that A1 to 8, 11, 13 and 15 were not used as part of change to the A (Amphibian) designation so it is wrong to list them in your new A template. MilborneOne (talk) 17:58, 30 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

Having another look at this we either need to put the OAs back where they were or create a new OA template and remove (or add a note) the not used ones from your new template. MilborneOne (talk) 18:10, 30 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
Sorry another thought is you could add the OA sequence to your new Amphibian template. MilborneOne (talk) 18:12, 30 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
Noted on the aircraft project page so others know we have an issue with the missing OAs. MilborneOne (talk) 18:23, 30 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

Editing news 2021 #2

edit

When newcomers had the Reply tool and tried to post on a talk page, they were more successful at posting a comment. (Source)

Earlier this year, the Editing team ran a large study of the Reply Tool. The main goal was to find out whether the Reply Tool helped newer editors communicate on wiki. The second goal was to see whether the comments that newer editors made using the tool needed to be reverted more frequently than comments newer editors made with the existing wikitext page editor.

The key results were:

  • Newer editors who had automatic ("default on") access to the Reply tool were more likely to post a comment on a talk page.
  • The comments that newer editors made with the Reply Tool were also less likely to be reverted than the comments that newer editors made with page editing.

These results give the Editing team confidence that the tool is helpful.

Looking ahead

The team is planning to make the Reply tool available to everyone as an opt-out preference in the coming months. This has already happened at the Arabic, Czech, and Hungarian Wikipedias.

The next step is to resolve a technical challenge. Then, they will deploy the Reply tool first to the Wikipedias that participated in the study. After that, they will deploy it, in stages, to the other Wikipedias and all WMF-hosted wikis.

You can turn on "Discussion Tools" in Beta Features now. After you get the Reply tool, you can change your preferences at any time in Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-editing-discussion.

Administrators' newsletter – July 2021

edit

News and updates for administrators from the past month (June 2021).

  Guideline and policy news

  • Consensus has been reached to delete all books in the book namespace. There was rough consensus that the deleted books should still be available on request at WP:REFUND even after the namespace is removed.
  • An RfC is open to discuss the next steps following a trial which automatically applied pending changes to TFAs.

  Technical news

  • IP addresses of unregistered users are to be hidden from everyone. There is a rough draft of how IP addresses may be shown to users who need to see them. This currently details allowing administrators, checkusers, stewards and those with a new usergroup to view the full IP address of unregistered users. Editors with at least 500 edits and an account over a year old will be able to see all but the end of the IP address in the proposal. The ability to see the IP addresses hidden behind the mask would be dependent on agreeing to not share the parts of the IP address they can see with those who do not have access to the same information. Accessing part of or the full IP address of a masked editor would also be logged. Comments on the draft are being welcomed at the talk page.

ZLEA: I note you have been working on Draft:Spirit of Cascia to improve it. Right now Spirit of Cascia redirects to Project Schoolflight. There is a large degree of overlap in these two articles. I have been looking at Draft:Spirit of Cascia and am not sure, if you strip out the overlap, that there will be much left. Shuttle-Centaur was a version of the Centaur upper stage rocket designed to be carried aloft inside the Space Shuttle. Two variants were developed: Centaur G-Prime and Centaur G. The powerful Centaur upper stage allowed for heavier deep space probes, and for them to reach Jupiter sooner. However, neither variant ever flew on a Shuttle.
