Citing sources (e.g. printed sources)
edithelp me Please :) I can't work out how to add citation and ref links correctly, any help appreciated! Thank you! Zephfya (talk) 02:37, 22 November 2009 (UTC)
Use the "ref" template and add the "
<references/>
" tag at the end of the page for the reference to be listed.See this example:
Google has a Firefox page. <references/>
And its implementation:
Google has a Firefox page. [1]
- ^ firefox page at Google
Thank you for that! I've done the online sources no problem now thanks to you, how do I format that for references from a printed book please?
Use the "citebook" template (you can read about it here). The source code could look like this:
In 1999, David Mumfold's Math lectures were published. <references/>
In a working mode:
In 1999, David Mumfold's Math lectures were published.[1]
- ^ Mumford, David (1999). The Red Book of Varieties and Schemes. Lecture notes in mathematics 1358. Springer-Verlag. doi:10.1007/b62130. ISBN 354063293X.
When answering a message at a talk page, write ":" or "*" before each line to indent it accordingly:
Question :answer1 ::Answer to answer1 *answer2 ** answer to answer2
In a working mode:Question
- answer1
- Answer to answer1
- answer2
- answer to answer2
And you are also recommended to sign each of your messages at talk pages with "~~~~". Further questions are welcome! --Q0k (talk) 06:52, 22 November 2009 (UTC)
Hi Zephfya. I'm replying from the helpme you left on the above page. I see you've already gotten advice from Q0k and it's very similar to what I would have said. So, since that still left you undsure of how to do it, let me try breaking it down into hopefully simpler bites.
Anything you place between ref tags () in an article formats as a footnote when you save wherever you place the template Reflist. You place the ref tags in the text, but they only appear there when you're looking behind the curtain, at the code in the article while editing. When you are reading the article in normal mode, the citations between ref tags you placed in the text appears in the references section at the end. There are citation templates which can help with formatting, such as cite book. These go in between the ref tags and make citing easier and more consistent to place. See here for a visual explanation of all this which might help.
So, if this was a sentences in an article that you wanted to place an inline citation to a book at the end, you'd type right here, just after this colon with no space:

References
({Reflist}}
The above is what it would look like when you were in edit mode. However, when you saved this and looked at it in read mode, what you'd see is this:
So, if this was a sentences in an article that you wanted to place an inline citation to a book at the end, you'd type right here, just after this colon with no space:[1]

Yes it does, thank you very much for your time and advice, I had two learning curves tonight, the fist QOK helped with and the second you were kind enough to respond to, I hope I have done it all correctly! If not, i'd appreciate any advice on how to bring it up to scratch! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Zephfya (talk • contribs)

- You've done great work! That's almost OK. But do you know that
Dog
makes a hyperlink to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dog? Just look: Dog. This is senseless to write "The Alchemyst, p.21
", because the page The Alchemyst, p.21 does not exist (this is why the link is red). You should simply write "The Alchemyst, p.21", without any brackets.

- Besides, the comma before the title should be replaced by "|", as the teplate looks like
You've done great work! That's almost OK.

— Q0k, book title
- I have corrected the first of the templates at the article (now you know that the code
The Alchemyst
gives a link to it:The Alchemyst) you have mentioned. There are about 10 of them uncorrected for your exercise. Any further questions are welcome! --Q0k (talk) 09:03, 22 November 2009 (UTC)- Thank you so much Q0k! I've been at it hours and just couldn't work that last page number glitch out! I've done that one now too, and also got the Michael Scott links after the quotes to direct to the author as opposed to the generic Michael Scott page! The only one that I just can't resolve is the header Josh Newman, it's still in red (which i now know means something is wrong!) I've worked through the night, it's 9:47 am here in the UK and I shall be seeing those pesky quotation marks in my sleep i'm sure! If you could please be so kind to indulge me your help one last time, could you advise me how to correct that please? I'll get to it as soon as I get back online from a much needed sleep! Reference attribution
editHi again Zephfya. I have reformatted all of the references you placed and I thought I'd describe a few issues since you are planning on sourcing other articles. You should provide full attribution, which includes, where available, author's name, publisher, date of publication and date you accessed the source. For example, for the Variety reference, the publisher is Variety. The author is Dave McNary, as listed on the Variety site, where the date of publication is also listed. Also, the title of the piece is whatever it is entitled at the external source (not "link" or "review"). So the full reference is:

The order the parameters are placed is irrelevant by the way. In other words, you can place |accessdate=
first, and |title=
last, or any other order, and it does not impact on how the reference formats. Cheers.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 17:22, 22 November 2009 (UTC)
- P.S. If the author is unlisted, you can place "Staff writers". Also, the first source is of highly dubious reliability. It's just a wiki where someone has placed a review. Please see Wikipedia:Reliable sources. I have tagged it as such.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 17:30, 22 November 2009 (UTC)
- Thank you so much for doing that Fughettaboutit! Both you and Q0k have been absolute stars with your advice and patience with me!I would welcome any advice you have on how to modify that first para, would the synopsis from the book cover be a good idea for that? I don't know where that description came from as it was placed there by another contributor!Zephfya (talk) 20:32, 22 November 2009 (UTC)
- You're most welcome. Well, I don't know about modifying the first paragraph—the whole lead could do with a rewrite to be a summary of the article, per that guideline, but there are many other sources to mine on a quick look. Check out: [1], [2], [3], [4], [5] and [6].--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 21:38, 22 November 2009 (UTC) 21:37, 22 November 2009 (UTC)

- Ok, i've re-worded the lead and made it concise and current, and removed the other contributors review, created a plot summary section with the summary from the book itself and put current links for everything I could think of to do! The page still has a request box at the top asking for sources and refs..but I don't understand why, could you take a look please and advise me what i need to do next to meet the criteria it's asking for? And the same with the "unreliable source" message after a couple of the links i've placed, I don't understand why the sources i've used would be classed as unreliable, so if you could explain, i'd be most grateful!Thank you so much!Zephfya (talk) 02:08, 23 November 2009 (UTC)
- LOL! You added all those unreliable source templates yourself! I took care of it. I had added the template RS (which renders as:[unreliable source?]) to only the first citation (the one that was already present in the article). You removed that citation but you also apparently used the citation format from that citation, including the RS template I had added, as an example for the code in your most recent citations. Thus, when you added them you flagged each of them as unreliable sources by including the RS template. If you look you'll see that there are still uncited sentences in the article (outside of the plot summary, which doesn't need any) so the refimprove template is still relevant. I'll take a look at the structure soon and see if I can tweak it a bit to meet our style standards.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 05:45, 23 November 2009 (UTC)

- I've now done the first pass on the next book of the series http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Magician:_The_Secrets_of_the_Immortal_Nicholas_Flamel is there anything that you'd like me to improve there? Many thanks for your expert eyes and advice!Zephfya (talk) 06:42, 23 November 2009 (UTC)

Michael Scott
editrecommend write more about his books and his life. the lead is meant to summarise the article, at the moment, some parts of the lead don't appear in the article and the first section is 'Online Games', so there should be a section discussing his books. recommend inline citation for every paragraph after the lead, also maybe good to have some criticism to show the other side Tom B (talk) 15:19, 28 November 2009 (UTC)

Children's Lit Assessment and Book Pages for The Secrets Of The Immortal Nicholas Flamel
editI am shortly, or already have, assessed several pages for books in this series. I noticed on the talk pages you'd asked for assessment. That notice did not draw attention at our project page. As you continue to update the pages if you would like reassessment please feel free to make a request at our requesting assessment page. There are a couple of us who are active at the moment in assessing pages.
As I assess the pages I notice that some of the content is similar from page to page, including information about the video games and film. Information on a specific page should be about that specific book. So, for instance, since there only seems to be one film in the works, at least from what I can gleam from the info presented, it should just be on the page for The Alchemist and the series pages. You are clearly passionate about the series and I wish you the best of luck as you continue to edit and improve the pages. Your truly, Barkeep49 (talk) 23:48, 2 January 2010 (UTC)
- Thank you for the advice! I do plan on giving them all a good polish, they were my first attempts and I wanted to know how I was doing, so much appreciate the pointers! Yes, only one film in production at the moment, it will incorporate the first two books, the rights to make the films for the whole series were brought by Mr Di Bonaventura. Request for interview
editHi Zephfya -
I'm a professor working with the GroupLens project at the University of Minnesota, trying to learn about how the adopt-a-user program functions so that we can hopefully develop tools and ideas that might improve it. Your user page indicates you have been adopted... would you be willing to have a conversation with me so I could ask you a bunch of questions about your interactions with the adopt-a-user program? (I'd be willing to do a phone call, instant messaging, or whatever way you would best prefer to do it.) I'm hoping that as a result of having a few of these conversations with people, I'll better understand how users in general get involved, how the adoptee / adopter pairings work out, and so on. Let me know. Thanks! SeparateWays (talk) 19:40, 16 November 2010 (UTC)
- Hi there,
Yes, I'd be more than happy to do that :) You may not want to take the phone call route (although i'm more than happy to) as i'm in the UK! If you want to shoot me an email so we can make the arrangements. Best wishes, Jules.
- Great, thanks! I've sent you email. SeparateWays (talk) 20:22, 2 December 2010 (UTC)

Disputed non-free use rationale for File:Necromancer-ukcover.jpg
editThank you for uploading File:Necromancer-ukcover.jpg. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.
If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator seven days after the file was tagged in accordance with section F7 of the criteria for speedy deletion.
