Thanks, finally for someone coming around and reviewing it. I'm always glad for outside comments; many of your suggestions will be incorported very soon as I do want the article to pass.

I only wish to respond in part to one aspect of your comments: the use of names. I used them because I've seen a number of peer reviews/FA noms etc. where editors got faulted over running quotes attributed to unnamed people, especially when those quotes are attributed to identified persons in the source material (as all the ones you pointed to are). I tend to agree ... it looks like you're weaseling.

I would also consider that, as the article makes clear, the subject is a person about whom many people speak anonymously and are then quoted as such in reliable sources we can use. I thus prefer to identify people as much as possible in that situation, so it looks less like a gossipy hit job and more like an evenhanded treatment of her life.

I'll certainly look at cutting down on the attribution, and perhaps some of the quotes, but I just want you to understand my reasoning on that. Daniel Case 20:41, 10 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Glad to hear you had no other problems with it. Hopefully I will be making changes tonight; if not, tomorrow. Daniel Case 20:49, 10 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Actually, I do have one other issue, going over this again today as I'm making changes, that I need to find some middle ground on. I don't know if you read the peer review (given how deeply hidden the link is on the talk page now I wouldn't be surprised), but as you can see the last suggestion there was to integrate the popular culture section (at that time a bulleted list) into the rest of the article (as you probably know, there's quite a few people who think we have entirely too many of those sections and that they're cruft and OR magnets).

So, given that, do you think that it's necessarily such a good idea to restore that section? I could see doing that, but if I eventually take it to FAC (as I'd like to at some point), I'm sure I'd have to tear it back down.

Also, I am uncomfortable with removing The Devil Wears Prada from the criticism section even though it would shorten it up. It counts for both "in popular culture" and criticism since it did incorporate a lot of longstanding criticisms.

You know, perhaps it should just be a separate section entirely. I'll do that. Daniel Case 14:58, 11 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

OK, I have made all the changes you suggested. It required some baby-killing, but the net result was to shave about 4K off the article. It's still long, but it's shorter. Daniel Case 18:21, 11 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Last change made. I hope you're not on vacation too long :-). Daniel Case 14:19, 12 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

As I said on the fashion project talk page, this is the first GA in it to have been at least partially developed to that level under that project's auspices. I feel more attached to it than I did to New Coke, "my" other GA. To see how much I developed it, take a look at what it was right before my very first edit to it.

I have decided to put the full-length versions of those quotes I truncated in the Wikiquote page with all the other ones. I started that because I found, while writing and developing it, that you got to understand her best through the observations of other people (Amiel's are most interesting).

I do think, as with any GA, that a little more work would be necessary before taking this to FAC. In this case I think it needs the two images I mentioned on the talk page, plus some extra perspective that could be derived from reading the relevant portions of Liz Tilberis and Diana Vreeland's memoirs. So it will probably be a while — I'll probably put a to-do box on the talk page in the meantime. I have some other things to move onto now ... most notably another GA nomination I've been planning from a quite different field, U.S. Route 9 in New York (if you want, take a look and give me any feedback you want ... there was next to none during peer review).

I should also probably do more GA reviewing myself and help clear the backlog. Daniel Case 21:47, 14 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hey dude. There is a problem with the picture of Shen Kuo in his article. Hey Zeus-

Yes I would like an extension for the GA Hold -- I was telling Marcusmax that I would've done those edits earlier but I was extremely busy with school and AP testing. What do you suggest still needs to be done? Sox23 00:20, 14 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thanks fox extending the hold. As of now, I have completed the checklist (user has since reinserted the table and I don't want to start an edit war). [Currently I am awaiting a response from a photographer in regards to a new fair-use licensed picture of Flight 1248] Sox23 01:30, 14 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Zeus- I have proposed a solution to the redundant "incident problem" I have deleted the redundant information [for the most part]; made new section for "December 8 incidents" (as the 2005 incident was a big deal for MDW), and made a section for incidents involving Midway Airport but not at the airport (a.k.a. United Airlines Flight 718) With that finished, I believe the checklist is completed. Sox23 23:14, 14 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Help needed:

Hey, I noticed you are a frequent contributor to WP:GA/R. There are a few discussion threads that are floundering and need additional comments from other editors. I would like to act on these soon, as they have been up for discussion for several weeks, but so few people have commented that I can't even archive as "no consensus" since we have a near null-set of comments. If you have the time, could you take a peek at the following articles and make any comments at WP:GA/R as you see fit? The articles needing additional comment are: Jeremy Clarkson, Ayaan Hirsi Ali, Anaximander, and Syncaris pacifica. Question

edit

I am trying to learn everything about GA reviewing and i saw you passed Qoyllur Rit'i. I wanted to know, is it really ok when so little is sourced from the internet? I know that probably not in this article's case, but everything could be made up and he could have made both those sites. I recently failed a film article mainly because all of it's references camed from the DVD's extras, so i'm asking you, should we sometimes just trust that those books/dvd's actually exist?. Thanks, though I don't think nepotism (promotion or hiring of family members, from the Latin "nepos" meaning grandson or nephew) is what you meant.

I don't really know where I would find the info to expand the sections you addressed, and I'm hesitant to rewrite the lead myself (I'm a translator, not an author!), though I suppose I could. Any help would be appreciated. -Oreo Priest 14:49, 22 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Apparently I had it in me after all! I think it's done now, unless there's anything more you'd like. -Oreo Priest 11:01, 23 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
The copyedit I agree with, the removal of red links I do not. Due to systemic bias, Wikipedia does not have good coverage on textile topics. I have asked a prominent member of Wikipedia:WikiProject Textile Arts (namely User:PKM) to look them over to see if either the articles exist but the links are slightly off or if they simply don't exist. Regardless, the red links represent articles which should legitimately be created in the future, and which would be helpful to the reader, and thus a deficiency of Wikipedia, not the article itself. I have removed the least likely/deserving to receive their own article, though I believe everything else should stay.
This discussion has also been copied to the article's talk page, where it should continue.
Thoughts? -Oreo Priest 17:21, 23 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
The article has now been thoroughly copyedited, so I think it's ready now. -Oreo Priest 17:31, 24 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Canut revolts

edit

I put this article up for translation, and it was fully translated by someone else. The problem, however, was that it was so coarse and unreadable with terrible flow that I have had to go through it and change practically every sentence so it sounds like normal English. (The original translator thought writing the whole thing in the historical present would be a good idea.) Could you be a second proofreader and give it a copyedit after I've finished? Thanks. -Oreo Priest 23:21, 29 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

You seem to be much more optimistic as to the fate of the article than I am. I think it's doomed to be a low-end B class unless some serious new research and improvement are put into it, something I'm not too keen on doing. Most of the information on the second revolt is taken from an "alternative information site," and while better than nothing and likely not too horribly biased, obviously we know what angle the authors are coming from. All I think you should bother yourself with is a read-over to make sure that my revamping of the article reads smoothly and is without spelling, grammar or formatting mistakes.
A project I do, however, have my eye on, and I really do think has potential is fr:Voûtement de la Senne. It's well-written, coherent and exhaustive and interesting. Living in Brussels, it was actually quite a shock when I found out about it, as there's no trace or mention of the river today. With the addition of inline citations, has GA written all over it. I plan to translate it in a subpage of my userpage (I'll tell you where) before moving it to the namespace, so I can share it with the world in DYK. Voûtement de la Senne

edit

OK, so I've created the article at User:Oreo Priest/Voûtement de la Senne, which you should probably write down somewhere. Because it's not in the namespace yet we can be informal with a lot of things, including leaving notes to each other in uncommented form. This does, however, mean we have to be more careful about things like categories and interwiki links, which should stay commented lest bots add links to the unfinished page to other articles.

Oh, and yes, I was hoping you would co-translate it with me. Please do give the canut revolts a brief look-over though to make sure it reads OK, then forget about it. You up for this? -Oreo Priest 10:05, 31 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Yes we should. As for the references, once we translate it, we can just add little citation needed tags throughout, and I can go to the library and find the page numbers, as I found the book in ULB's library today. -Oreo Priest 15:51, 31 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
In case you were worrying about making things in the article bilingual Dutch/French, don't. When we're done I know a couple of Flemings on WP that I can bring in to weaken the pro-French bias in the article. (Mostly just the monolingual street names.) Also, I think it's easier to keep track of our discussion if we sign our "posts". -Oreo Priest 11:03, 1 November 2007 (UTC)Reply
A tip: when unsure how to translate a term in French, open up the article on the French WP (link is at the top of the article in this case), follow the link, and look in the left bar to see if there is a corresponding English article which translates to that. If that doesn't work, leave it red and in French, and I'll deal with it. -Oreo Priest 19:13, 1 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Check out what is likely my first of many ridiculous tangents. I wrote (half translated really) Saint Gaugericus Island when I couldn't sleep, but now I'm exhausted. The map took me forever to make as I'd never used the software before... -Oreo Priest 03:09, 3 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

The last paragraph is yours. I'm going to try to work on the images, and perhaps some proofreading and peripheral articles. That OK? -Oreo Priest 18:13, 3 November 2007 (UTC)Reply
So I think you finished off the translation. All that remains now is to have a Fleming go over it and translate French bias in our writing. Would you mind adding the {{fact}} tags before Wednesday, so I can add them when I'm in the library? Also, do you think it's a problem that we basically only have 5 sources for the article (and only two even vaguely major at that)? -Oreo Priest 16:10, 5 November 2007 (UTC)Reply
Exactly. Add them anywhere you think they could be challenged, and go nuts. I would help, but I'm a very poor judge of this sort of thing. Worst case scenario the GA reviewer doesn't like it, so I'd have to take my computer to the library again and add some sources from other books, which should be possible. Also, take a look over to see if I've left any unaddressed comments. -Oreo Priest 17:38, 5 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Looks like the Fleming I brought in actually made an effort to improve the article. I love wikipedia! Also, remember how I said in Hungary that some Australian GG vetoed a bill, pissing everyone off? It seems to actually have been far worse than that. -Oreo Priest 11:01, 6 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Good work. I've moved our disputed sentence back, I think we should keep tweaking it in minor ways until it is acceptable to both of us. As for the sewer museum, I have a list of 80 museums in Brussels, and it's not on the list. How did you find out about it? If I want to see the tunnels too, all I have to do is ride the extant premetro.
On a more important note, let's just propose some hooks, and clean up all the junk and notes. I think this bad boy is ready for the namespace. -Oreo Priest 11:44, 8 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

GA template

edit

Just thought i'll let you know that when you add the GA template in the article's discussion, you don't have to put the articles name in topic but in which category it has been listed as a GA. So only one of these should be in "topic": arts, langlit, philrelig, everydaylife, socsci, geography, history, engtech, math, natsci, or miscellaneous. See WP:GAPQ#Categories. Apparently this is a problem because it makes some bots malfunction. Cheers! -Yamanbaiia 10:29, 4 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Bombardment of Brussels

I've decided that after the Covering of the Senne, I'm going to work on translating the Bombardment of Brussels. You're once again invited to help, and the sandbox is at User:Oreo Priest/Bombardment of Brussels. Everything else should be the same; Hooiwind will be invited to participate, and even the original author of the French article is the same. One thing worth mentioning is that I think the reconstruction section should be drastically shortened, and made about the same length as the other sub-sections. If you're not interested, no biggie. Either way, let me know. -Oreo Priest 17:45, 24 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

You start at the top this time, I'll work on cleaning up the bottom. Naturally, if you need to leave any commments, do it in bold so we don't forget to take it out. I should warn you that I might not put a huge amount of time into this yet, due to school, but then again I also might. I just don't want you to be surprized if you're the only one working on it for a bit. -Oreo Priest 08:54, 25 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
I noticed you left several red links in the section you translated, mostly from translating proper nouns from French into English. I find the best way to translate proper nouns is to open the French article, click on the link, and then go to the English interwiki to see what it is called in English. It's more time-consuming, but it is much more precise and accurate. -Oreo Priest 12:22, 9 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

You can bet your *** I want you to take pictures! Lol. Dude, if you can take a picture of the Song Dynasty's Liaodi Pagoda, the tallest of the pre-modern pagodas in China, that would be incredible, considering that there is a very limited amount of pictures of it available online. But I'm not sure where you are located or where you intend to travel, so it might be completely out of your way. I'll pretty much settle for any pictures that you take. If you visit any Chinese art museums, take tons of pictures. If you come across any historical architecture, take tons of pictures. Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons are so desperately lacking visual media on Chinese architecture, although the wealth of pictures is growing with the help of people such as yourself. If you can provide me list of the places you intend to visit, I'm sure I can provide a multitude of suggestions.

Thanks a million,--Pericles of AthensTalk 13:11, 31 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Great! Wow, where to begin.

In Beijing, you could take additional photos of:

For your trip next weekend to Hebei alone, additional pictures could be taken of:

In Shaanxi:

In Shanxi:

  • Pagoda of Fogong Temple (only two pictures available)
  • Mount Wutai, dude if you could get a picture of the oldest wooden buildings standing in China from the Tang Dynasty, that would be amazing. I'm referring to East Hall of Fuguang Monastery and Nanchan Monastery.

In Henan:

  • Qizu Pagoda (has no pictures of it at Wikimedia Commons)
  • If you visit Mount Song, you can take a picture of the oldest standing pagoda in China, Songyue Pagoda. The only picture of it that exists on Wikipedia is a stupid stamp, which is not very impressive or imposing looking, unfortunately, and does not do the structure any justice.

Don't know if you'll wind up visiting Shandong, but...:

Hold on, I can think of more...lol.--Pericles of AthensTalk 14:08, 31 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

I don't want to give the impression that I care only about architecture pictures above ground. If you visit anything like Han Dynasty tombs, such as the Lei Cheng Han Tomb, that would be awesome to have pictures of its inner architectural features! Or hell, any art museum in China will have tons of artifacts from old Imperial China. Just take your pick.--Pericles of AthensTalk 14:30, 31 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
I hope I haven't overwhelmed you here. I in no way expect you to take pictures of all of these. In fact, good luck taking pictures of any of them! If anything, though, Liaodi Pagoda needs a picture.--Pericles of AthensTalk 15:45, 31 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
Wow! You mean business! I think, despite the time of day, the pictures look absolutely fine. Great job, especially with the close-up view of the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda, since no one had bothered to take a picture that close before. A closer view really defines the decorative vertical pillar facades in the brick exterior and the lifting eaves that a viewer would otherwise be unable to distinguish before with other pictures at Commons. Once again, excellent work.--Pericles of AthensTalk 10:14, 1 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Awesome! I've already used one of your pictures in Liao Dynasty, Pagoda of Tianning Temple (Beijing), and Chinese pagoda.--Pericles of AthensTalk 15:25, 5 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

I noticed that you've taken pics of the pagoda forest near the Shaolin Temple. Close by is the Fawang Temple. Did you happen to visit there or are planning to visit there? More Tang Dynasty pagodas are located there, including one that is 131 ft tall! Cheers.
That's a shame, oh well, I'll take whatever I can get!--Pericles of AthensTalk 01:18, 8 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi Zeus. If you're interested, User:Ramtears has a list of temples in China on his user page, and you can snap photos of them if you're up to the challenge, since only a few of them (Famen Temple, Xuanmiao Temple, Guanghua Temple (Beijing)) have pictures.--Pericles of AthensTalk 23:42, 10 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Another potential building to snap a photo of: Chongwen Pagoda of Shaanxi, the second-tallest pre-modern pagoda in China after the Liaodi Pagoda.--Pericles of AthensTalk 15:53, 11 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

History of the Han Dynasty

edit

Thank you for adding that information to the Yellow Turban Rebellion section of History of the Han Dynasty. I knew I had read somewhere about the Five Pecks of Rice Daoist rebellion (can't remember where), but I was completely misled by Valerie Hansen, who says:

"Important continuities linked the practices of the Five Peck Daoists with earlier Daoist teachers like those described by Wang Chong. The Five Peck Daoists worshipped the Dao, in the person of the deified Laozi, and their members recited The Way and Integrity Classic as a means of curing illness. Another group of Daoists, called the Yellow Turbans, was active at the time in the area between the Yellow and the Huai rivers on the eastern coast of China, but they differed from the Five Peck Daoists in that they rebelled against Han-dynasty rule."

Hansen, Valerie. (2000). The Open Empire: A History of China to 1600. New York & London: W.W. Norton & Company. ISBN 0393973743. Page 145.

The bolding of the text in the quote is my own emphasis. Why would she say that if it is untrue? Seems very unscholarly. In any case, thanks for correcting this, and with a new source nonetheless! Very nice. Also, have you checked out my other new article for the Han Dynasty, the Economy of the Han Dynasty? Maybe you can spot another mistake. Lol.--Pericles of AthensTalk 22:10, 7 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hey Zeus. I responded to your GAC review after significantly reducing the article by about 3 KB in prose size. There's more work to be done, but I think I cut out much of the extraneous fluff.--Pericles of AthensTalk 19:44, 12 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
Well to be fair, two quotes from scholars were rather small ones that you might have missed since they consisted of a couple quoted words and not a whole sentence. I didn't mean to suggest that you believed the whole Wang Mang section should be scrapped; I simply used the term "but not everything" as an exaggeratory phrase. As for references, I've already started eliminating extraneous ones as you've suggested, which is a good point, because redundancy isn't necessary and it was perhaps a bit of paranoia on my part to place a citation after every sentence. Sometimes if you don't, editors come in and put the dreaded "citation needed" tag on your sentences, because they don't understand that it should be implied that the citation of the next sentence also counts for the citation in the previous sentence.--Pericles of AthensTalk 00:48, 13 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
Following your advice, I just deleted several instances where there were redundant citations in the same paragraph. Are things looking a bit better? I'd like to know how much more progress you think should be made with reducing article size.--Pericles of AthensTalk 01:14, 13 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
Thanks! I'll continue the effort to reduce the size of the article before the FAC process rolls around.--Pericles of AthensTalk 02:56, 13 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

User Iwanafish continues to disrupt and vandalize this page and it has spread his behavior to other pages. Sweet! We could always use more photos of the Pagoda of Fogong Temple, especially interior ones. You take some excellent shots! You're a much better photographer than I am. I also saw your excellent photo of Shanhua Temple. Somehow you have a knack for taking pictures on gorgeous days with lots of sun! Perfect.

I have a question: do you venture into Sichuan on occasion? Like Shandong and a couple other provinces, Sichuan is home to some of the oldest aboveground stone architecture still standing in China. I speak of course about the que 闕 pillar-gates of the Han Dynasty. This one is an excellent example. It's located in in Ya'an and was built for the tomb complex of Gao Yi in the 2nd century AD. Ever consider taking photos of Han que pillar-gates?--Pericles of AthensTalk 15:53, 3 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

Really? You can't access something as fundamental as Google Books in China? I think they take their censorship policy way too far. Speedy deletion nomination of Five Dragons Temple

edit

A tag has been placed on Five Dragons Temple requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about about a person, organization (band, club, company, etc.) or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable. You may also wish to consider using a Wizard to help you create articles - see the Article Wizard.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you.

Asian 10,000 Challenge invite

edit

Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Asia/The 10,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge and Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like South East Asia, Japan/China or India etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. At some stage we hope to run some contests to benefit Asian content, a destubathon perhaps, aimed at reducing the stub count would be a good place to start, based on the current Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon which has produced near 200 articles in just three days. If you would like to see this happening for Asia, and see potential in this attracting more interest and editors for the country/countries you work on please sign up and being contributing to the challenge! This is a way we can target every country of Asia, and steadily vastly improve the encyclopedia. We need numbers to make this work so consider signing up as a participant! Thank you. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 05:05, 21 October 2016 (UTC)Reply
