The club was established in 2011 as Sportclub Telstar Vrouwenvoetbal Noord-Holland and previously played in the BeNe League. After the 2016–17 season, the team relocated to Alkmaar and formed VV Alkmaar.[1][2][3] In January 2022, media outlets reported Telstar, under the new VVK organization, would rejoin the Eredivisie the following season.[4][5] The team's home stadium is the 5,200 seat 711 Stadion.

In July 2024, Telstar announced a partnership with a newly formed women's football club, Hera United, that could lead to Hera operating the Eredivisie club beginning in the 2025-2026 season.[6] This change requires approval from the KNVB.[7] Hera intends to play its matches at the Olympic Stadium in Amsterdam,[8] including a potential Amsterdam derby with AFC Ajax, though it may continue to play some of its matches in Velsen in 2025 and beyond.[9]
